HYMN
NEH 205 WESTMINSTER ABBEY

Words: c. 7th C. Latin, trans. John Mason Neale (1818–66)

Music: adapted from Henry Purcell

The minister reads

Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us
in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our
manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should
not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of
Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess
them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient
heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of
the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.
And although we ought, at all times, humbly to
acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we
most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet
together to render thanks for the great benefits that
we have received at his hands, to set forth his most
worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to
ask those things which are requisite and necessary,
as well for the body as the soul.
Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are
here present, to accompany me with a pure heart,
and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly
grace, saying after me;
All say, kneeling
Almighty and most merciful Father;
We have erred, and strayed from thy ways
like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices
and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against thy holy laws.
We have left undone those things
which we ought to have done;
and we have done those things
which we ought not to have done;
and there is no health in us.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
miserable offenders.
Spare thou them, O God,
which confess their faults.
Restore thou them that are penitent;
according to thy promises declared
unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father,
for his sake;
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous,
and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy name.
Amen.

The minister then says the ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather
that he may turn from his wickedness and live;
and hath given power, and commandment to his
Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people,
being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of
their sins: He pardoneth and absolveth all them that
truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel.
Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true
repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things
may please him, which we do at this present;
and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure
and holy; so that at the last we may come to his
eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
RESPONSES Rose
O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

The congregation sits for PSALM 119: 145–160

I call with my whole heart :
hear me, O Lord, I will keep thy statutes.
Yea, even unto thee do I call :
help me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.
Early in the morning do I cry unto thee :
for in thy word is my trust.
Mine eyes prevent the night-watches :
that I might be occupied in thy words.
Hear my voice, O Lord, according unto thy loving-
kindness : quicken me, according as thou art wont.
They draw nigh that of malice persecute me :
and are far from thy law.
Be thou nigh at hand, O Lord :
for all thy commandments are true.
As concerning thy testimonies, I have known long
since : that thou hast grounded them for ever.
O consider mine adversity, and deliver me :
for I do not forget thy law.
Avenge thou my cause, and deliver me :
quicken me, according to thy word.
Health is far from the ungodly :
for they regard not thy statutes.
Great is thy mercy, O Lord :
quicken me, as thou art wont.
Many there are that trouble me, and persecute me :
yet do I not swerve from thy testimonies.
It grieveth me when I see the transgressors :
because they keep not thy law.
Consider, O Lord, how I love thy commandments :
O quicken me, according to thy loving-kindness.
Thy word is true from everlasting : all the judgements
of thy righteousness endure for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
The FIRST LESSON is read
A reading from the Book of Genesis.
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God
make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the Lord
God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us,
to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth
his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat,
and live for ever: Therefore the Lord God sent him
forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground
from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man;
and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden
Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned
every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and
bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was
a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain
brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto
the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings
of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had
respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain
and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was
very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord
said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy
countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not
be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at
the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou
shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his
brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the
field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother,
and slew him. And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is
Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my
brother’s keeper? And he said, What hast thou done?
the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from
the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth,
which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s
blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground,
it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength;
a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Genesis 3: 21 – 4: 12

All stand for the MAGNIFICAT

Collegium Regale Howells
My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath
rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded
the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from
henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy
is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him
throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength
with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the
imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the
mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble
and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering
his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised
to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Glory be to the Father …

All sit for the SECOND LESSON

A reading from St Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love where-
with he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins,
hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace
ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and
made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding
riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through
Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not
of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
works, which God hath before ordained that we
should walk in them.
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past
Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision
by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh
made by hands; That at that time ye were without
Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel,
and strangers from the covenants of promise, having
no hope, and without God in the world: But now in
Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made
nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who
hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle
wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his
flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of
twain one new man, so making peace; And that he
might reconcile both unto God in one body by the
cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came
and preached peace to you which were afar off, and
to them that were nigh. For through him we both
have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household
of God; And are built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being
the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly
framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the
Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
Ephesians 2: 4–end
All stand for the NUNC DIMITTIS
Collegium Regale Howells
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy
salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face
of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles,
and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be
to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.

All turn East and say THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried:
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;

the Holy Catholick Church;
the Communion of Saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the Resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

All kneel

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father
which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

RESPONSES
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
And grant us thy salvation.
O Lord, save the Queen.
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Endue thy ministers with righteousness.
And make thy chosen people joyful.
O Lord, save thy people.
And bless thine inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Because there is none other that fighteth for us,
but only thou, O God.
O God, make clean our hearts within us.
And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

O Lord, from whom all good things do come;
Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy
inspiration we may think those things that be good,
and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same;
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE COLLECT FOR PEACE

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels,
and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants
that peace which the world cannot give; that both
our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments,
and also that by thee we being defended from the
fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and
quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our
Saviour. Amen.

THE COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and
dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son,
our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
All sit for the ANTHEM
O Lord, support us (2005)

O Lord, support us all the day long, until the

shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and
the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is
over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy
grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace
at the last. Amen.

THIS EVENING’S MUSIC

The canticles that Herbert Howells wrote between 1945
and 1951 are known to demonstrate the composer’s
highest achievements in the genre – the Collegium
Regale, Gloucester and St Paul’s services abound with
sensitivity and drama, and stand out as clearly the
work of an impressively deft compositional and
dramaturgical mind. After the first performance of
the Collegium Regale setting in 1945 – in King’s
College Chapel, by whose choir they had been
commissioned – the service became a continuous
point of reference through which the specific strengths
and weaknesses of other settings would be distilled.
In this setting, Howells revolutionised the received
template for music of the Anglican evening service,
introducing a strikingly dramatic understanding of the
familiar text and demonstrating new modal idioms,
whilst still giving voice to the age-proven truisms of
the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis specifically. Paul
Spicer writes that ‘It is somehow fitting that possibly
the most sublime piece of architecture in England,
the chapel at King’s College, Cambridge, should be the
launching pad for the twentieth century’s equivalent
in music for the church’. Howells himself wrote of
this setting that ‘the mighty should be put down from
their seat without a brute force […] Only the Gloria
should raise its voice’.

Tonight’s anthem is a setting of the beautiful

evening collect ‘O Lord, support us’ from the 1928
Book of Common Prayer, taken from the words of
John Henry Newman. David Briggs was commissioned
to write the work in 2005 by Jeremy Bruns, the then
Assistant Organist of St Thomas Church, Fifth
Avenue, New York, in honour of Jeremy’s wife, Kathy.
Meurig Bowe calls the piece ‘a tender wash of
unashamed loveliness’.
