DESIGN SHEETS

NOTE
The Bridge site was inspected by the Executive Engineer Ramanagaram Divisioin along with Assistant
Executive Engineer, Kanakapura, Field Officers, the Contractor and the Consultants on 17th Feb 2017. It was
observed from the Geotechnical report that soft rock is present for a considerable depth and the trial bores
have not been extended to hard rock.
In view of the standing water and presence of harmful elements in the water the top region of soft rock would
have detiriorated and may not have good resisting properties. Also the position of abutment requires a review.
following decisions were taken at site:
1) The pile termination level to be fixed at 3 diameters below the soft rock indicated in Geotech
report and GAD
2) Providing 6mm liners upto top of soft rock
3) Shifting of abutment by 5m relatively towards Industrial area side
4) Cantilever returns is sufficient
The designs have been carried out on the above lines.

using 20 mm dia bars, No of bars reqd = 2040 = 7.0
314.16 say 7

provide 20 @150 mmc/c in one layer along shorter direction

Calculation of Shear Reinforcement:

Check for One way Shear:
2
actual area of main steel provided Ast = 4396.00 mm /m
Maximum shear considered = 3322.60 kN
= 664.52 kN/m
Shear stress τ = 664.52 x 1000 = 0.156 Mpa
1000 x 1700
100As = 0.259
bd
(From Table 12B of IRC 21 2000) τc = 0.25 Mpa
Since τ < τc Shear reinforcement not required

Check for Punching Shear:

Max. Vertical load on the pile = 2285.9 kN
Punching Perimeter = 6.23 m
Punching Shear Stress = 0.216 Mpa
Permissible Punching Shear stress = 0.16 √ fck (As per IRC 21-2000, Cl 31.6.3.1)
= 0.800
Hence, Pilecap is Safe in Punching Shear.

Design of pier shaft

cross sectional area of pier = 7.020 m
minimum area of steel = 0.3 x 7.020 x 1000 x 1000

using 20 mm dia bars, No of bars reqd = 21060 = 68.0

314.16 say 70

provide 70 No's 20mm dia bars distributed on all four sides

Design of Pier cap
Cross sectional area of cap = 1200 x 300 mm

continuously supported cap

As per IRC 21 2000
Provide 1 % reinforcement of the cross sectional area divided in both directions at top and bottom
Ast = 1 x 360000
