implications.

 In this lesson, we will explore the concept of the “growth

mindset” and how one concept can take on various
interpretations depending on where and by whom it is
considered. For instance, the concept “prominent figure” can
have different interpretations depending on context and
culture. In the West, prominent figures are often regarded as
authority figures that make policies to affect societal changes.
On the other hand, in Eastern countries, prominent figures
can be described as the those who are in power or control of
the world. Think about this difference as you explore the
contents of this module.

If you know what you are looking for before you start reading you can
use two helpful reading strategies to avoid having to read an entire
article for information. Although they are often conflated, skimming
and scanning are two different ways to find different information. Not
only that, but to skim and to scan a reading, you have to look in
different places.

Skimming is what you should do if you want to understand the main

idea of a piece of writing. Use your writing strategies and think about
the order you are supposed to present information and where
important information is located. When skimming, it is normally a
good strategy to read the introductory paragraph, and the first and
last sentence of every paragraph. If a particular part or section of the
text looks important, you can take a little more time to read that part a
little more carefully. Also, it is always a good idea to focus on the
headings, subheadings, and bolded information in a text while
skimming.

A good strategy to help you to improve your skimming technique is to

give yourself a time limit to find the important information.

Scanning is the technique that you should use if you have specific
information that you want to find in a piece of writing. For instance,
let’s say you want to find a good action movie playing at your local
cinema. When you look at the movie listings, your eyes are on the
lookout for keywords often associated with action films (e.g., exciting,
thrilling, fast-paced). Once you find a keyword that seems promising,
you read the words before and after it to find out some more
important information.
When scanning, your eyes are like the scanner on your printer, they
are going through the document looking for specific information and
mostly ignoring the other information.

3. Skim and scan practice. 12 min

 Open the Skimming and Scanning Skill Development

worksheet and read the questions. By reading the directions
and the questions. Mark if you will skim or scan the article to
find the answer.
 Skim the article: “You Can Grow Your Intelligence”
https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/mindset-net-
site/FileCenter/52G3LTP08OVNI3G9NMI8.pdf to answer the
skim and scan to answer the questions.
 Submit their completed worksheet through the LMS. You
should take no more than 12 minutes to complete this
skimming and scanning exercise.

4. Listening for specific information 16 min

Open Listening for Main Ideas info gap activity. Preview the
questions try to predict what sort of information you will need.

For instance, the first question: “______________ started the idea of

growth mindset.” is really asking “Who?” By previewing the question,
you can know that you will need to listen for the name of a person or
organization to answer this question.

Then, students watch the video:

out the info gap activity. The answers will be graded by the LMS.
