Intro:

step 1: Abbreviations and materials

Material :
Lion Brand Fun Fur yarn, "Lava" (black/gray/silver eyelash fun fur yarn)
Worsted Weight white or cream yarn
Worsted weight black yarn
4.0mm crochet hook
fiberfill stuffing

Abbreviations :
ch = chain
dec = decrease (1 sc in two stitches)
dc = double crochet
inc = increase (2 sc in one stitch)
sc = single crochet
ss = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
tc = triple crochet

= repeat directions between * * as many times as indicated

step 2: Body
I did this in a spiral, use a marker to keep track of each row.

Using Fun Fur yarn:

1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook
2: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sts)
3: *1 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (18 sts)
4: *2 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (24 sts)
5: *3 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (30 sts)
6: *4 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (36 sts)
7: *5 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (42 sts)
8-10: sc in each st around (42 sts)
11: *4 sc, dec 1*, x 6 (36 sts)
12: sc in each st around (36sts)
13: *3 sc, dec 1*, x 6 (30 sts)
14: sc in each st around (30sts)
15: *2 sc, dec 1*, x 6 (24 sts)
16: sc in each st around (24sts)
17: *1 sc, dec 1*, x 6 (18 sts)
18: *dec 1*, x 6 (12 sts)

now is a good time to stuff the body with fiberfill!

step 3: Head
Here you will switch back and forth with the black and white yarn. Hide the extra color inside the head to carry. You will want to fill the head with fiberfill right before
closing it up.

black: *sc, inc 1* x 6 (18 sts)

white: *sc, inc 1* x 3, inc 1, sc, inc 1
black: *sc, inc 1* 5, sc, sc
white: sc x 3
black: sc x 3
white: sc x 3
black: sc x 17
white: 1sc, dec 1
black: sc x 3
white: dec 1, sc
black: *sc, dec 1* x 5, sc, sc
white: sc, ss
black: sc x 3
white: ss, sc
black: *sc, dec 1* x 4, sc x 2, dec 1, sc x 3, dec 1 x 10, finish off.

Image Notes
1. here's his beak once it's sewed onto the bottom portion of the black center part of his face. You may need to mess with the shape a bit to get it to look good.

step 4: Beak
black yarn: ch 2 and crochet into first ch, (or magic ring) 1sc, 1dc, 1sc, 1dc, join tog. Shape into a triangle, and use the tail to sew onto the face.

step 5: feet
This is actually a base that includes feet. Using black yarn: 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sts) 3: 2 sc in each sc around (24 sts) 4:
*1 sc, inc 1*, x 6 (36 sts) 5: ch2, turn. tc x 1, sc x 10, ch 2, tc x 1, sc x 1 6. ch1, turn. 4sc around foot, slip stitches across to other foot, sc around foot. Finish off, and use
the tail to sew onto the base of the body.

step 6: Wings
Wings, make two:
ch6, 2 tc in 2nd ch, tc x 4, ch 1, sc around the whole wing, finish off.
Use tail of yarn to sew onto body.

step 7: Eyes
Sew eyes into place, either sew thread eyes or use beads. And you're finished! Depending on the tension, yours may look a little different.

The best amigurumi EVER! Absolutely adorable!!!

I tried to learn crochet during Christmas 2006 and made one scarf, then nothing...I have become inspired again in recent months when I saw some
amigurumi books! I will try this baby penguin next! Do you have any recommendations of beginner websites or books for someone new to the stitch names
and crochet/ amigurimi "lingo"?

Much of what I have seen in books assumes that people are already familiar with these terms & how to make certain stitches. I'm a quilter & penguin lover,
and I have GOT to make some of these amigurumi animals, especially penguins! I have even seen some interesting ones of people and inanimate objects.
Basically anything can be crocheted, I am beginning to see...

I taught myself by watching clips on YouTube! Just search for the stitch you need to learn. My first project was a small toy from "Amigurumi!: Super
Happy Crochet Cute"

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

I tend to research everything online that I want to do with crochet... that's how I learned to crochet amigurumi. There's a fantastic library of stitch tutorials
at http://www.freepatterns.com/content/content.html?content_cat_id=332&type_id=S that I love.

Planet June has some great tips, too, that will come in handy for the penguin. http://www.planetjune.com/blog/amigurumi-help/

Great job! Looks very cute! You can post the results and stuff into a Slideshow, then you can enter it into the LionBrand Yarn challenge! Great job!

That's absolutely adorable!

The big question: do I make them for my Linux-geek friends, or for their toddlers? ;) I may just have to make lots!
