Chittagong Water Supply Improvement & Sanitation Project (CWSISP) Method Statement for Under Crossing
Contract No: CWSISP/W-5 March- 2019

1. Introduction:
The project of Chittagong Water Supply Improvement & Sanitation Project (CWSISP) of CWASA
funded by World Bank (WB), Contract Package No. CWSISP/W-5 contains several numbers of Under
crossing which suppose to be done by Jacking method. Before starting of work Contractor will
submit the detail work plan to Consultants for approval. This document provides detailed
information of Ductile Iron pipe (1200 mm) laying work under Crossing from Departure chainage
15+280m to Arrival chainage 15+297.5m of the TR-02 in CWSISP/W-5 project. Engineer will be
issued with this Method Statement and the Schedule of pipe line work in advance of going on site.
Additional measures are provided in this document, which will be implemented in accordance with
the schedule of project. SWEG-TCEL-FSL JV. will monitor all works undertaken in W-5 project.

2. Scope of works:

DI pipe laying activity in TR-02 of under crossing at chainage 15+280 m to chainage 15+297.5m is to
be undertaken within in CWSISP/W-5 project following hydraulic jacking method. During under
crossing activity we will pay keen attention on existing utilities which have already been determined
by trial hole activity and have found of existing utilities in the TR-02 route line at Jetty Ghat Mor of
the project. The formation of road pavement and underground soil is also obtained from trial pit
activity. This work may continue up to several days. So, we will provide sufficient heavy sheet piles,
safety barricades and indicator to ensure smooth movement of traffic. In addition to, we will
surround the working space by means of temporary fencing so that except construction team no
one would able to enter the site. Once pipe laying being accomplished we will reinstate the road
according to contract specifications. For your concern, we have drawn the complete layout of under
crossing arrangement with appropriate dimensions. Level sheet of pipe laying work has been
prepared and will be provide to concern senior site engineer of our project.

8.3 Execution Procedure for Pipe Jacking

1) Soil Stabilization: Deep mixing or any other convenient method could be applied for soil
stabilization, if needed, shall be rent rotating mixing tool & Deep mixing method can be applied in
most soft soils. The mechanized process of mixing is by using a rotating mixing tool, drilling the tool
into the soil. After this, the drilling rotation is reversed, extracting it and at the same time as the dry
binder is injected and mixed into the soil. Through the rotating movement, the soil is mixed with
the binder and an immediate reaction starts. The improved soil acquires the share of a column.

The column so formed can have diameters ranging from 0.5m to 1m and the lengths up to
25m.The columns can also be interlocked to provide cellular structure of in-situ wall or the entire
mass can be stabilized. Dry mixing is a highly effective ground treatment system used to improve
the load performance of soft soils. By varying the proportion of lime, cement and admixtures, a
range of strength gains can be achieved. The greatest improvements can be achieved in inorganic
soils with low moisture content.

The original technique known internationally as the deep mixing method (DMM) was developed
simultaneously in Sweden and Japan in the mid- 1970s. Now, DMM is a ground treatment,
improvement, and support method of global application and increasing popularity and value.
Compared with other similar ground improvement methods, the deep mixing method (DMM) is
the method specially designed to treat the soft Soils. DMM are divided into three systems namely,

1. shallow soil mixing (SSM),

2. deep soil mixing (DSM)and
3. Jet grouting systems (JGS).

Deep mixing method is an in-situ soil treatment Technology where by the soil is blended with
cementitious and/or other materials. The deep mixing method is often classified into two
methods: dry and wet method, based on the type of binder, the mechanism of bleeding in rotary
Chittagong Water Supply Improvement & Sanitation Project (CWSISP) Method Statement for Under Crossing
Contract No: CWSISP/W-5 March- 2019

or jet assisted, and the vertical extent over which blending is accomplished. The former utilizes
the dry powdered binder whereas the latter utilizes the water-binder slurry. Naturally, there are
some differences in the execution machines between dry and wet methods. However, there is no
substantial difference in the characteristics of treated soils between them. The apparent difference
in the design procedure and application comes from the purpose of improvement, which in turn
gives rise to the difference in the installation patterns and in the order of strength required.

Figure 10: Deep Mixing Process-DMM Method

Deep mixing method emphasizes on column type techniques using lime/cement. It is a soil
improvement method, which is performed to improve the strength, deformation properties and
hydraulic conductivity of the soil. It is based on mixing binders, such as cement, lime, fly ash and
other additives, with the soil by the use of rotating mixing tools in order to form columns of a
hardening material since pozzolanic reactions between the binder and the soil grains are
developed. The main advantage of these methods is the long-term increase in strength. Pozzolanic
reaction can continue for months or even years after mixing, resulting in the increase in strength
of cement stabilized soil with the increase in curing time. No need to have soil stabilization, if found
medium hard clay of soil layer.

Contract No: CWSISP/W-5 March- 2019

2) Preparation Work

3) Thrust concrete wall or Steel wall

a) Heavy Steel wall shall be constructed on site & if needed, Thrust wall shall be constructed by
plain concrete for improve the soil stability against thrust force and executed the wall face
perpendicular to thrust direction and even surface to improve the accuracy of pipe jacking
work.

4) Setting of Jacking equipment at Departure shaft

a) Thrust platform shall be constructed enough to support upper loads safely such as solid and
stable structure without any movement or deformation.
b) H-steel shall be used for both guide rail and sleeper.
c) Suitable crane chosen in consideration of site condition shall be used for pipe jacking.
d) Locally fabricated Steel materials shall be used for spacer block, strut, and stand for jack,
because thrust receiving materials is considered as structure that spreads equally to pipe
cross section.
e) Hydraulic jack, pump and unit shall be chosen with enough capacity. Required pieces of
hydraulic jack having 200 ton capacity each will be used in this method and this Hydraulic
Jack is made by locally. Hydraulic Jack will be operated by using hydraulic oil pump. Hydraulic
Oil pump is power generated device which is having a pressure gauge to control the hydraulic
oil acceleration. Even though, the pressure gauge will indicate the thrust force value in each
jacking stroke. Hydraulic oil pump with hydraulic hose pipe will be used for operating
hydraulic jack. Hydraulic oil pump will be as per required quality standard to ensure safe and
comfortable to use.

complete pushing, DI pipe will be installed through this.

9. Pipe Installation
Chittagong Water Supply Improvement & Sanitation Project (CWSISP) Method Statement for Under Crossing
Contract No: CWSISP/W-5 March- 2019

After installing rectangular steel casing pipe, DI pipe will be pushed through that pipe by crane. As
we have to cross only 6m due to Rail Crossing it won’t be difficult to insert pipe in the casing by
crane. But before inserting pipe following activities will be done:

a. Specified personnel will be appointed to ensure no damages to pipe body and coating during
crossing.

b. The casing pipe will be joined in strict accordance with requirements and standards.

Anticorrosion shall be conducted in strict accordance with requirements if necessary.

piles, H beams, mechanical jack will be removed. Then launching shaft and arrival shaft will be
backfilled as per contract details.

c) Removal of Jacking Equipment

1) Cutting edge and jacking pipe shall be removed and lifted from departure shaft by 10ton
rough terrain crane.
d) Demolition of Thrust concrete wall
