Question 1 You have a $50 coupon from the manufacturer that is good for the purchase of a
cell phone. The store where you are purchasing your cell phone is oering a 20% discount on cell
phones. Let x be the regular price of the cell phone.
(a) Suppose only the 20% discount applies. Find a function f that models the purchase price
of the cell phone as a function of the regular price.
(b) Suppose only the $50 coupon applies. Find a function g that models the purchase price of
the cell phone as a function of the sticker price x.
(c) If you can use the coupon and the discount, then the purchase price is either (f ◦ g)(x)
or (g ◦ f )(x), depending on the order in which they are applied to the price. Find both
(f ◦ g)(x) and (g ◦ f )(x). Which composition gives the lower price?
(d) Suppose that the store oers the best purchase option possible. Find the inverse h of the
function representing the purchase option.
(e) Find h(1000). What does your answer represent?

Question 2 An indoor swimming pool can hold at most 100 people. With the ticket price at
$10, the average attendance is 50 people. A market survey indicates that for every dollar the
ticket price is lowered, attendance increases by 10. Likewise, for every dollar the ticket price is
increased, attendance lowers by 10.
(a) Find a function that models the revenue in terms of ticket price.
(b) What is the minimum ticket price so that the swimming pool is not overcrowded.
(c) Find the price that maximizes revenue from ticket sales.
(d) What ticket price is considered to be too high to generate any revenue?

Question 3
(a) Given that L = limx→0 sinx x exists. Use a table of suitable values to estimate L.
(b) Based on your estimation in (a), calculate the limit
x tan x
lim .
x→0 1 − cos x

Question 4 Sketch the graph of f . Use your graph to determine the values of a for which
limx→a f (x) exists. Find the numbers at which f is discontinuous. At which of these numbers is
f continuous from the right, from the left, or neither?

3. If f (x) = x2 + 10 sin x, show that there is a number c such that f (c) = 1000.
4. Suppose f is continuous on [1, 5] and the only solutions of the equation f (x) = 6 are x = 1
and x = 4. If f (2) = 8, explain why f (3) > 6.

Question 6 Sketch the graph of a function f which satises all of the following properties.

• limx→0+ f (x) = −2.

• limx→0− f (x) = 1.

• f (0) = −1.

• limx→+∞ f (x) = 3.

• limx→−∞ f (x) = 4.

• limx→3+ f (x) = +∞.

• limx→3− f (x) = −∞.
