PBS: Following the
Global Standards
T he unique ability of PBS Velka Bites (PBS) to carry out in-house design &development,
manufacture and testing of small jet and turbine engines, APUs and air-conditioning sys-

success on the global market. It has been a leading manufacturer of aerospace technology for
50 years. Company certification is a key competitive advantage of PBS. They are an EASA Part

Su-30 SM Fighters Favourites of Russian Forces S.Radhakrishnan
A
cquisition of Su-30SM multi-role
fighters has become the top priority
of the Russian Ministry of Defence.
Even the current reduction in military ex-
penses and a slowdown in the renovation
of aircraft inventories have not dampened
the purchase of this aircraft.
According to the estimates of Center for
the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies
(CAST), the Moscow-based popular think
tank, last year IRKUT Corporation supplied
17 Su-30SM fighters. Other Russian mili-
tary aircraft, like Su-35C and MiG-29SMT
fighters, as well as Su-34 bombers, were
acquired by Russian military in a smaller
number.
In addition to this, in 2016 the Russian MoD
signed up with IRKUT Corporation, new
contracts for the supply of Su-30SMs. CAST
experts say, that at the moment, the order
book for Su-30SM has 116 aircraft. More
than half of this is operational now. Once
the current contracts are executed, Su-
30SM will become the largest single pack
of modern fighters of the Russian Armed
Forces. It is to be noted, this aircraft is be-
ing currently acquired both by the Russian
Aerospace Forces and the Russian Navy.
Judging by supplies in 2016, the Russian
Naval aviation has decided to make Su-
30SM its major fighter of ground basing.
Now, the fighters are being delivered to
three of the four regional formations of the
Russian Navy.
Major reason for increasing the number of
Su-30 SM is its performance in anti-terrorist
operations in Syria. General Sergey Shoygu,
the Russian Defence Minister, at the end of
December 2016, included Su-30SM in the
list of military systems, which “have dem-
onstrated the high efficiency at combat
operations in Syria”.
Su-30SM fighters are being delivered not
only to regular units. “Russian Knights” and
“Falcons of Russia”, the two leading Russian
aerobic teams, during 2016 replaced their
Su-27s by new Su-30SMs.
Pilots of aerobic teams explain their choice
in favour of Su-30SM because the new
fighter is a modern combat aircraft with
complete onboard avionics systems. Su-
30SM is much better than Su-27, because
of its aiming-navigation system, which
enables long-range flights without a lead-
ing aircraft. An increased onboard fuel load
and an in-flight refuelling feature make its
flight range unlimited, limitations are dic-
tated only by the pilot’s physical abilities.
From the technical point of view, Su-30SM
is a developed model of the Su-30MKI,
which forms the backbone of the Indian Air
Force. From the very start, the “SM” variant
was developed for the Russian MoD and
had been supplied to the Russian AF since
2012. Later on, its export was allowed to
the Russia’s allies under the regional mili-
