1) This is a routine operation therefor hold a Pre job toolbox talk

and utilise the TRIC card as a risk assessment and lifting plan.

2) If a problem occurs or the plan changes, stop and re-assess the

situation, review the risk assessment and lifting plan.

3) A competent person should carry out a pre-use inspection of the

drill floor winches and all lifting accessories and ensure colour
code is current and the SWL is adequate for the task.
4) Where necessary use tag lines to stabilise load especially in bad
weather.

5) This operation normally can be considered as routine and can be

adequately planned using a TRIC card. However any BHA
components which have to be tailed in using the platform crane
and drawworks must be covered by a separate lifting plan and
risk assessment.

6) The Driller has the overall responsibility for the supervision of

this operation.

7) All snub lines are certified, in good condition and "hooked up"
correctly.

8) Torque limits are known.

9) The correct jaws are fitted to either tongs or Iron Roughneck.

10) Crown-o-matic set accordingly.

11) The height of stands when they incorporate additional drilling

tools.

12) All pick up subs installed on collars standing in the derrick must
be "torqued up".

13) When handling slick components, which cannot be fitted with

handling subs, if the component is to be lifted out of the
horizontal plane, securely install a dog collar and double wrap a
sling below it. Remember: ensure the component is slung so that
it has adequate stability and be aware of the anticipated path of
the load.

14) Tubulars should not be rolled on or off the catwalk without the
Rig Superintendents permission.

15) Hooks of any type should not be used for any lifting
operation using Drillfloor winches.

4. PROCEDURES

CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

4.1 PREPARATION

1) Hold a toolbox talk and complete the TRIC card, ensure that all
crewmembers are aware of the risks and the controls put in place
to mitigate them, also that they are familiar with the lifting plan.

2) Select the correct power assignment.

3) Select the correct gearing.

4) Check the slips and elevators are of the correct type and size and
are in good condition.

5) Install the elevators.

6) Give accurate details of the job, lifting plan and associated risks
to the crew.

7) Change out tong or iron roughneck jaw sizes if required.

8) Unlock the block's swivel mechanism.

9) Reset the crown-o-matic if required.

Despite their obvious differences handling BHA components requires

virtually the same techniques. To this effect the installation of a blade
stabiliser is used as an example. The removal involves the same steps but
in reverse.

4.2 PERFORMING

DRILL COLLAR HANGING FROM THE BLOCKS.

DRILL COLLAR SITTING IN THE SLIPS.

1) Supervise the raising of the stabiliser by the tugger and

insertion on the "table pin" (pineapple). Remember, know the
weight of the stabiliser and use suitable lifting accessories

2) Ensure all measurements have been taken, that the shoulders have
not been damaged and the correct dope applied.
3) Open the vernier. Lower the blocks slowly until the pin end of
the drill collar is guided into the box end of the stabiliser. Do not
set any weight down as yet.

4) As the men turn the stabiliser, lower the blocks by small

independent movements as the threads engage. Do not set any
more than 1,000 lbs down.

CP-DOG-005
Page 3 of Section 1 : 5
Rev 01
22nd Aug 1997
CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

5) To aid the make up of the last thread lower the blocks until
approximately 50% of the collar weight is resting on the stabiliser.
Now raise the block 3 - 6" and allow the men to snub up the joint
with chain tongs (this may have to be repeated until the shoulders
meet).

6) Raise the blocks until the pin end is over the box end of the drill
collar. (Ensure the table pin has not been lifted by the stabiliser.)

7) Lower the blocks until the stabiliser pin enters the box of the drill
collar and set down with no more than 1,000 lbs.

8) As the stabiliser is turned to the right maintain the set down

weight by lowering the block as required. (Ensure the upper
connection does not back out.)

9) Supervise the torque application to the lower joint with either the
rig tongs or iron roughneck.

10) Raise the blocks and lift the string enough to allow the slips to be
un-set but still held round the collar.

11) Lower the blocks until the slips are set just under the stabiliser
blade.

12) Supervise the torque application to the top connection.

13) Raise the blocks to allow the slips to be pulled.

14) Supervise the removal of a table bushing (if required to allow the
stabiliser to pass). Remember: Check the lifting equipment prior
to use. Ensure crewmembers are aware of the path of the
bushings when pulled. (Refer to DOG section 1.25)

15) Run in the hole.

(Take care when running collar and stabilisers through the stack
because of the possibility of 'hang ups'.)

5. ON COMPLETION

1) Prepare for the next BHA component as require. Reset and

check crown-o-matic if going onto pipe.

2) Check to see that the risk assessment and lifting plans are still
valid for the next stage of the operation.

1) This operation normally can be considered to be routine and can

be adequately planned using the TRIC as a risk assessment and
lifting plan. However if a new or unusual rig up is required then
a separate plan must be produced.

2) Where necessary use tag lines to stabilise load especially in bad

weather.

3) The harness is checked for damaged and remedial action taken if

necessary.

4) The inertia safety reel is function tested. (A sharp pull down on

the line should activate the device.)

5) Check all ropes for fraying or damage, replace if necessary.

6) Check the board matting is secure and good condition.

7) The safety line is securely attached to the harness and the anchor
by the appropriate method.

8) Hard hat AND chin strap to be worn at all times.

9) Visually check the board and fingers.

10) Remove any knots in the ropes.

11) Know the additional forces likely to be encountered manoeuvring

drill collars.

12) Know the approximate height of the stands and drilling tools.

13) The Derrickman is the responsible person for all work activities
in the derrick.

From a derrickman's standpoint the techniques required when running or

pulling BHA components are so similar that one procedure will cover the
operation. One being the reverse of the other.

4. PROCEDURE PULLING BACK BHA

4.1 PREPARATION

1) Hold a toolbox talk and ensure that everyone concerned is aware

of the risks and the controls put in place to mitigate them and
also that they are familiar with the lifting plan.

2) Competent person to carry out pre-use inspection of monkey

board winch and all the lifting accessories, ensure colour code is
current and the SWL is adequate for the task.

3) Don the harness and ensure a snug fit prior to accessing the
board.

4) Adjust the belly rope to give you the equivalent manoeuvrability

that is required for running in pipe.

5) Install the tugger remote control on the derrick belt.

6) Function the tugger.

7) Unspool enough tugger line to enable the line to be passed round

the collar and hooked back onto itself.

8) Lay out the "side rope" from the appropriate side. Allow enough
to wrap around the collar twice with a three to four foot overlap.
(Measurements are based on the collar hanging vertically from the
blocks.)

CP-DOG-005
Page 6 of Section 1 : 5
Rev 01
22nd Aug 1997
CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

The side from which the rope is deployed is normally the side
opposite the direction of lean that the collar will take when
initially stood back.

If the height of the collar when stood back places the elevators
out of reach, a rope can be tied to the latch handle and used to
unlatch the elevators. This is normally installed when the
elevators are level with the board.

9) Have unlatching rope easily accessible.

10) Open the appropriate finger.

4.2 PERFORMANCE

1) Instruct the Driller to stop the elevators just above board level.

2) Tie on the rope to the latch.

3) Signal the Driller when the rope is secure.

(The slips are now set.)

4) Loop the tugger line round the collar, hook it back onto itself and
take up the slack.
(Care must be taken when the collar is being turned that the line
does not catch).

5) Loop the side rope round and hold loosely.

6) As the collar is lowered lift the tugger line and the rope upwards.
Take the strain with the tugger and pull the collar over to the
edge of the board.
(This aids the movement at the bottom.)

7) When the elevators no longer support the collar weight unlatch

them and let them "fall away".

8) Manoeuvre the collar into its finger using a combination of

the tugger, the side rope and muscle power.

9) When in the finger, secure the collar and remove the rope and
tugger.

Note: Remove the unlatching rope at board level if there is no

further use for it or the weather is likely to cause it to catch
during the descent.

5. ON COMPLETION

1) Unspool enough tugger line for the next stand.

2) Lay out the rope.

3) Prepare the finger.

Note: When running in with high stands of drill collars, use a man in the
riding belt to latch all elevators which are beyond normal reach.

2) Stay clear of the tongs during the application of high torques.

3) Use the tugger to lift all subs.

4) Avoid trapping areas caused by the additional weight of the tools

being used.

5) Use the tugger or tailing rope for all tailing operations.

6) Use proper kinetic handling techniques when using the dog collar.

7) Ensure full understanding of the lifting plan and associated risks.

8) The Driller has the overall responsibility for the supervision of

this operation.

9) Tubulars / tools should not be rolled on or off the catwalk

3. SAFETY INFORMATION & LOLER CONSIDERATIONS

1) All lifting operations should be properly planned, appropriately

supervised and carried out to protect the safety of workers,

2) Routine lifting plans can be done using the TRIC card, however
more complex lifts, for example two cranes lifting the same load
would require a separate lifting plan.

3) Never stand under a suspended load.

4) Use tag lines in windy conditions and when the load is to be moved
out of the immediate vicinity.

5) Keep work areas clean, tidy and free from obstructions.

6) Establish crane signals between the banksman and the crane driver.

7) Ensure the crane driver can see the banksman.

8) If radios are to be used select the correct channel and use

standard radio voice procedures.

9) Always stand to the 'side' of tubulars when they are being lifted.

10) Know the rated capacity of the slings in use.

11) Ensure the slings are correctly colour coded, certified and in
good condition.

12) Ensure the load to be picked up and the slinging configuration

does not exceed the rated capacity of the slings.

13) Know the rig specific rules on restriction of crane use due to weather
conditions.

14) Ensure that any lifting accessories used for securing the load are
compatible with the load taking into account any attachment
points on the load, the environmental conditions in which the
accessories will be used and their configuration of use.

15) Ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent the load, or
part of the load disintegrating while being lifted.

16) Ropes, chains or slings should only be shortened in a safe

manner.

17) Can be considered to be a routine operation, however careful co-

ordination between the Roustabout crew and drill crew is
required, there for the entire Roustabout crew should attend the
toolbox talk and be familiar with the risk assessment and lifting
plans. The risk assessment and lifting plan should consider the
work activities on the catwalk, pipe deck and the drill floor.

18) Any tools, tubulars or equipment, which require to be tailed in

using the crane and drawworks then, a separate lifting plan will
have to be produced. An example of this would be picking up the
MWD tool.

19) The Roustabout Pusher is responsible for supervising all work

activities on the Pipe Deck and Catwalk.

20) Tubulars of any description will not be rolled on or off the

catwalk without the Rig Superintendents permission.

4. PROCEDURE

As the handling of tubulars and drilling tools with the crane incorporates
essentially the same techniques, the transfer of MWD tools from a transit
basket on the pipe deck to catwalk, then on to the drill floor will be used
as an example.
CP-DOG-005

4.1 PREPARATION

TWO MEN AND A CRANE DRIVER ARE REQUIRED.

1) Hold a toolbox talk with all concerned including the crane driver
and utilise the TRIC card as a risk assessment. A separate lifting
plan will have to be made out when two means of lifting is used
for the same load, ensure that everyone is aware of the risks and
the controls put in place to mitigate them, also make sure that
everybody is familiar with the lifting plan.

2) A competent person should carry out a pre-use inspection of all

lifting equipment and accessories. Ensure the colour code is
current and the SWL is adequate for the task.
(Ref. CP-DOG-005 Section 6.4)
.

3) The work area is clean, tidy and free from obstacles.

4) Remove the sea fasting form around the MWD tools, and ensure
the tool is free to lift out of the transit basket.

5) Install a set of brothers on the crane hook.

6) Ensure protectors are correctly fitted to all threads.

4.2 PERFORMING

1) Position the brothers over the middle of the MWD tool.

2) Double rap and choke the tool with two slings each positioned
approximately five foot from each end. (Care must be taken to
ensure the choking effect comes from the same direction and that
the slings are not crossed). Remember that each sling should
have an SWL approximately equal to the gross weight of the
load.

3) Hook the brothers into each sling eye.

4) Step to the side and signal the crane to pick up slowly. (This is
done by the designated banksman using either a radio or hand
signals)

CP-DOG-005
Page 14 of Section 1 : 5
Rev 01
22nd Aug 1997
CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

5) Observe the sling tightening on it. Ensure the sling does not slip
towards the centre of the pipe.

6) Stop the crane lifting just prior to picking up the tool, and attach
a tag line at one end of the load. (use a slip knot)

7) Stand clear and signal the crane to raise the tool, ensure the load
does not get entangled with the transit basket, raise high enough
to clear samson posts or any other obstacles.

8) Bank the crane until the load is located vertically over the
catwalk.

9) Control the lateral movement with the tag line.

10) Signal the crane to lower and land the tool on the catwalk, ensure
the box end of the tool faces the V-door.

11) Remove the sling eye from one of the brother’s hooks (the one
supporting the box end of the tool.)

12) Bank the crane so that the jib is directly above the pin end of the
tool.

13) Attach a lifting cap to the box end of the MWD tool and then
connect that to the rig floor winch. (Under certain conditions it
may be advisable to connect the catwalk tugger to the back of the
MWD tool so as to steady it and if necessary hold it back.)

14) Pick up on the drill floor tugger and instruct the crane to lift at
the same time, slowly transfer the tool from the catwalk to the drill
floor. This part of the operation requires a separate lifting plan
and close supervision.

15) The floorman on the tugger will lower the tool on to a prepared
wooden batten, meanwhile the crane holds the tool steady in a
horizontal position.

16) The sling and the lifting cap are removed, the sling is then double
rapped round the MWD tool about 4 feet from the box end and re-
attached to the tugger.

17) Pick up on the tugger to a convenient height and make up a lifting

sub suitable for 5” elevators.

18) Move the MWD tool forward, which is suspended by the crane at
the pin end and the rig floor tugger at the box end, until the lifting
sub is immediately below the elevators.

CP-DOG-005
Page 15 of Section 1 : 5
Rev 01
22nd Aug 1997
CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

19) The Driller will lower the travelling block until the elevators can
be latched on to the MWD tool.

20) The Driller will slowly pick up on the travelling bock, meanwhile
the banksman will signal the crane so as to tail the tool in until
the pin end reaches the top of the v-door.

21) The banksman will signal the crane to lower the tool, so that the
crane can be released from the load.

22) The Driller then picks up slowly with the MWD tools progress
being controlled by the v-door rope.

4.3 ALTERNATIVE METHOD

1) Once the MWD tool has been safely laid out on the catwalk,
remove the box end protector.

2) Clean and inspect the threads then apply a light coating of dope.

3) Make up the lifting sub using a chain tong, ensure the sub is faced
up to the MWD tool and is as tight as possible without resorting
to the use of extensions to the chain tong. Mark the made up joints
with a paint stick in case the joint begins to back out.

4) Double wrap an appropriate sling around the MWD tool,

approximately 4 feet down from the box end then attach to the rig
floor tugger.

5) Pick up on the drill floor tugger and instruct the crane to lift at
the same time, slowly transfer the tool from the catwalk to the drill
floor. This part of the operation requires a separate lifting plan
and close supervision.

6) Move the MWD tool forward, which is suspended by the crane at

the pin end and the rig floor tugger at the box end, until the lifting
sub is immediately below the elevators.

7) The Driller will lower the travelling block until the elevators can
be latched on to the MWD tool.

8) The Driller will slowly pick up on the travelling bock, meanwhile

the banksman will signal the crane so as to tail the tool in until
the pin end reaches the top of the v-door.

ON COMPLETION

3) Prepare for the next BHA component as required

4) Check to see that the risk assessment and lifting plans are still
valid for the next stage of the operation.
