RACKING BACK THE KELLY

1. SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

1) Hook opening/locking device.

3. SAFETY INFORMATION & LOLER CONSIDERATIONS

1) This is considered a routine operation therefor the TRIC card


can be used for a lifting plan and risk assessment.

2) A competent person will carry out a pre-use inspection of the


tugger used to pull back the Kelly, also all the lifting
accessories, ensure all items are adequate for the load and that
the colour code is current.

3) Should a problem occur or the plan changes then stop and re-
assess the situation, review the risk assessment and lifting plan.

4) The Driller has overall responsibility for supervising the


operation.

5) The passage of the Kelly must be made in a controlled manner.

6) Personnel and objects must be kept out of the Kelly’s path of


travel.

7) Secure footing when operating the hook opening device is


provided.

Precautions

1) Ensure nothing can impede the passage of the Kelly sock.

2) All securing devices are removed.

3) Clean and tidy the area underfoot if necessary.

4. PROCEDURES

MEN REQUIRED; DRILLER AND THREE FLOORMEN.

4.1 PREPARATION

1) Hold a toolbox talk and complete the TRIC card, ensure that all
crewmembers are aware of the risks and the controls put in place
to mitigate them, also that they are familiar with the lifting plan.

2) An adequate amount of pull back line ie. Enough to reach the Kelly is
spooled ready for use.

3) The Kelly sock (rathole) is freed of any securing devices and if


required brought forward.

4) The unhooking device is placed readily at hand.

4.2 PERFORMANCE

After the Kelly has been disconnected from the string (Ref: Procedure for
Connections).

1) Attach the pull back line to the lower end of the Kelly.

2) Take up any slack in the pull back line.

3) Raise the Kelly with the blocks until the Kelly pin end is above
the level of the top of the sock.

4) Pull back the Kelly in a controlled manner with the pull back
tugger until the pin end is centred over the sock.

5) Transfer pull back tugger from Kelly to Kelly sock.

6) Lower the Kelly with the blocks until the Kelly weight is
transferred to the sock and the Kelly bail just lifts off the load
bearing surface of the hook, stop the block at this position.

7) Open the hook with the opening device.

8) Pull the Kelly and sock back to its full extent of travel with the
tugger. This will disengage the Kelly bail from the hook.

9) Locate all Kelly sock securing devices.

10) Slacken off the pull back tugger line and establish that the sock is
secure.

11) Close the hook with the opening stick.

12) Unlock the block with the opening stick.

5. ON COMPLETION

1) Store the opening device in a secure manner.

2) Ready the pull back tugger for use.
