Environmental Mission Statement

The triple bottom line comes down to this short equation: People + Planet = Social +

Environmental Responsibility. “People” considers employees, the labor involved in a

corporation’s work, and the wider community where a corporation does business. Another way

to look at “people” is, how much does a company benefit society? A triple bottom line company

pays fair wages and takes steps to ensure humane working conditions at supplier factories. The

bottom line referred to as the "planet" represents the implementation of sustainable practices

and the reduction of environmental impact. These measures range in scope from green

initiatives such as recycling programs within corporations to companies dedicated to

manufacturing products using only sustainable materials. Environmental variables should

represent measurements of natural resources and reflect potential influences on its reliability. It

could incorporate air and water quality, energy consumption, natural resources, solid and toxic

waste, and land use/land cover. Ideally, having long-range trends available for each of the

environmental variables would help organizations identify the impacts a project or policy would

have on that specific area. Interior designers have an impact on the triple bottom line because

of the choices they make for their clientele depending on the type of project environment. My

goal as a future interior designer is to use materials that are environmentally friendly,

economically efficient, and reusable from generation to generation. The environmental impact

will be a part of every project I am involved in. In addition, I will communicate this with the

clientele and demonstrate how the various recycled materials and finishes will benefit their

project and environment.

 Concept Statement/Project Scope

To create an open lounge and dining space for the Food For Thought Café patrons and

building guests. The space is to minimally receive new interior floor, wall and ceiling finishes,

window treatments, furniture and Food for Thought Café service counter. Interior finishes and

furnishings must be environmentally friendly, support the needs of the occupants and staff and

overall design is to incorporate some form of University of Wisconsin Stevens Point branding

element.

Integral innovation is the theme of the renovated Food for Thought Café space, creativity

and personalized spaces are made for collaboration and self-guided studying worktimes.

Creating that balance between public and semi-private spaces within the Food for Thought Café

gives it a cozy and homey atmosphere. Making the space welcoming for many different levels of

students that are interested in spending time in the Food for Thought Café. Creating a space for

a mix of different uses can be achieved by the use of environmentally friendly materials and

furniture including reclaimed wood as my key feature for the Food for Thought Café.

RATIONALE:
ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN:
Carpet tiles, also known as carpet squares or modular carpet, are a modern and stylish
alternative to standard carpet rolls. Carpet tile offers a variety of design options and makes
designs possible that broadloom can’t cost-effectively replicate, such as a checkerboard effect
or certain textured layouts.
PERFORMANCE QUALITIES:
Carpet tile backing material options include: vinyl, fiberglass, vinyl/fiberglass, urethane,
woven polypropylene, and recycled vinyl. Quality backing systems are important because they
provide dimensional stability and help carpet tiles withstand moisture.
Along with different backing options, carpet tiles come in both non-adhesive and
adhesive styles. You can find carpet tiles that either have a peel-and-stick back or require glue.
Both types of tiles are ideal for do-it-yourself projects and can be removed with relative ease,
should you ever need to.
USER NEEDS:
Modular carpet tiles are one of the most popular flooring options in commercial

Stackable chairs offer a very nice and authentic look to conference rooms. They are
uniform in nature. Steady and stable atmosphere is very essential for conference rooms. Since
they are versatile in nature, such furniture is easier to handle especially when storing and
transporting them.
PERFORMANCE QUALITIES:
Professional look – Conference rooms are official looking places. Stacking chairs have
the professional look about them. Since they are all bought together, they match and blend in.
The idea is to have good chairs which are not ostentatious in nature. First impressions are what
last.
Comfortable – These stackable chairs are not just another piece of plastic. They come
with comfort and leisure. The seats are upholstered. The curved back on the chairs are good for
the backs and do not cause injury.
USER NEEDS:
There are various methods of stacking and storing them, depending on the kind of

Polyester has its own advantages. The material is less rigid and stiff compared to
polypropylene, making the polyester fabric more comfortable on the bare skin.
If the couch is placed near a window, the polyester material is also less likely to fade or
heat up from the UV rays. It is more resistant to UV exposure.
PERFORMANCE QUALITIES:
Slightly breathable: To some extent, polyester is breathable, which means you can avoid
the stench that is associated with unbreathable materials.
Attractive: If you are looking for a couch fabric that mimics leather, polyester is closer to
what you expect. The fabric comes in attractive colors and patterns.
USER NEEDS:
Comfort: Fabric sofas are hands down more comfortable than leather sofas. The biggest
reason is as mentioned earlier; it does not adjust to the weather as the leather does. A fabric
sofa is generally softer and cozier to the touch.
Price: Fabric sofas are typically lower in price than leather sofas. Nevertheless, a
high-quality fabric is essential so that might drive the price up a little.
MAINTENANCE:
Durable: Polyester material is known to withstand abrasion, discoloration, and stains.

Seating Becomes More Comfortable - People of all ages often enjoy sitting on padded
bench seats. The seating can be much more comfortable when it is tucked close to a wall as no
one is bumping into you as they walk past. There is also an intimate feeling to bench seating
that makes it a warm addition to many spaces.
PERFORMANCE QUALITIES:
The average individual chair would need at least 24 inches or more in order to have
space to pull it out, push it in and comfortably sit. The addition of benches allows more seating
flexibility than individual chairs. Bench seating can be a beautiful, cozy addition to any space. It
can add functionality and be a unique design feature.
USER NEEDS:
Bench seating can offer more width for larger people who may feel crammed into a chair
with arms. If you love a more casual look, benches are a perfect choice, giving the whole space
a less formal style, perfect for younger people. And finally, they are incredibly versatile,
providing quick additional seating or surfaces in other areas of the space.
MAINTENANCE:
They are also much easier to move about when you are cleaning or vacuuming under
them – it’s simply one item to move instead of many.
