Assignment 1: EMBANKMENT DAM DESIGN

Pbroblem 1- Determine the dimension of a cross section of an earth fill

dam with the following information:

Normal Water Level (MNWL)

Design Flood Level (DFL) DFL = NWL + 3m
Check Flood Level (CFL) = DFL + 0,5m
The wind speed velocity for each water level for NWL is V1,
The wind speed velocity for each water level for DFL is V2 = V1/1,5
Fetch for NWL is L1,
Fetch for DFL is L2 = L1+0,3km
The longitudinal section along the horizontal line is given
Determine:
1. Grade of dam
2. The crest level of the earth dam (crest)
3. The crest width, upstream and downstream slope, berm (if necessary),
berm width
4. Explain the composition, function and dimension of dam crest, dam
body, drainage, upstream and downstream protection, the drainage
trench…

Problem 2 Seepage
Based on the earthfill dam dimesion that you have designed in problem 1
1. Draw the river-side cross section of dam (A-A) with size to scale
1:1000
2. Determine the position of seepage line
3. Draw the flow net for the dam and the foundation in section A-A
4. Make calculation for the total flow discharge through the dam and
foundation for section A-A
5. Make calculation for the total water head, pressure head and elevation
head at point B, C, D as in the figure
6. Estimate the seepage strength of dam and foundation to check if it
exceeds the limit
Given:
The horizontal permeability Kh and the vertical permeability Kv of the dam
and the foundation is equal (i.e. isotropic) Kh=Kv
The permeability coefficient of the dam and the foundation is the same: K
dam = 7.10-8 m/s; K foundation=10-6m/s
NWL is given in Ex1
Tail water is to the ground (no tail water)
Assume the foundation depth T is evenly distributed in the river-side cross
section. T is the thickness of the foundation given in the Geological
longitudinal section in Ex1. Materials in the foundation is clay/sand

Problem 3. Slope stability

Based on the results of problem 1 (the dimension of the dam) and problem 2
(the flow net) determine the factor of safety, Fs, by using the method of
Fellenius/Bishop.

The situation considered is a full reservoir at NWL with steady state

seepage.

Given:
Dam Foundation
Moisture (wet) W=20% 20%

Porosity n = 0.35 0.39

Frictional angle  = 23o (above the seepage line) 24

’ = 20o (below the seepage line 22
earth is saturated)
Cohesion C = 3.0 T/m2(above the seepage 2.4
line)
C’ = 2.4 T/m2 (below the seepage 2.0
line earth is saturated)

Dry unit weight D = 1.62 T/m3 1,59
