Assess how you conducted your experiment.

● Please move this document to your s hared Biology folder.

● To complete this, you will need to refer to your project proposal.
● After you answer all the questions, remember to submit the document in Canvas.

Sample size
1. Below, put what you planned for sample size and/or repeated measures (#9 in experimental proposal).
I planned to replicate the tests three times.

2. Below, put the actual sample size and/or repeated measures you completed by the deadline (February
5).
I only did the tests once.

3. If there are differences between your initial plan and what you completed by the deadline, explain
a) why they are different, and
b) what you could have done differently to reach your goal on time.

I was late in ordering the markers. I wanted to make sure I got everything done on time so I did not
replicate the tests. I did conduct them with two colors each. I could have made sure I ordered my markers
on time so that I had time to work. I could also have asked my parents for help more often.

Procedure
4. Below, paste a copy of your planned steps from your project proposal (#15).
1.
1) fade - 11. Repeat steps 1-3
Things you need - 12. Leave until Feb 3rd
- Markers 13. Observe change
- Paper (from my sketchbook) 14. Record data
Steps -

a. Repeat for other markers - Markers
02. Set in a sunny area (inside) - Thin black pen

04. Leave for a day Steps -
05. Take “after” picture 01. Place 3 pieces of paper (stacked) on table
06. Observe change or like surface
07. Repeat steps 1-3 02. Draw a 1 by 1 square with black pen on
08. Leave for 5 days the top paper
09. Take after picture a. Repeat 3 times
10. Observe change b. Wait for ink to dry
03. Swatch inside the square with first alcohol f. Record data
marker (color A) 02. Part 2
04. After a 30 second period measure how a. Draw another line
much ink has bled outside the lines i. Can be same sheet or not
05. Lift up paper and record how much the ink ii. Let sit for 30 seconds
bled through the paper b. Take marker and draw over line
06. Record data c. Repeat for other markers
07. Repeat steps with each marker in color B d. Measure amount of smudge
e. Record data
3) Blend f.
Things you need - 5) White Gel Pens

cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol) - White gel pen
Steps - Steps -
01. Place paper on table or like surface 01. Place paper on table or like surface
02. Mark out 4 2in by 1in rectangles on paper 02. Swatch marker on paper
a. Mark on top of shape where the 03. Let sit for 10 seconds
center is 04. Draw over swatch with white gel pen
03. Fill one side of the rectangle with color A a. Let sit for 10 seconds
04. Fill the opposite side with color B 05. Observe opacity
a. If blended skip to step (8) If not ↓ 06. Repeat steps 2-4

4) Liners - Paper (from my sketchbook)
Things you need - Steps -
- Markers 01. Fade

04. Quality of Nib e. Observe
a. Place paper on table or like surface f. Repeat for other markers
b. Swatch one end of the marker g. Record data
c. Observe

5. Carefully look over your initial plans. In a numbered or bullet-pointed list below,
a) identify in detail things you actually did differently, and
b) explain why you made each change.
I think simplified the blending test. I kept going until it was blended. I also started with the lighter color
one time and I wish I didn’t do that. I changed it because the first way would not generate very accurate
results. I wanted to show what was easiest to blend and how much you had to blend to get a clean
gradient.
Variables
6. In your proposal, find your standardized (#8) and extraneous variables (#10) and list them in the table
below.
Standardized variables Extraneous variables

1) amount of sun 1) weather

1) type of paper

2) type of paper

2) how much ink

3) colors

3) type of paper

3) colorless blender

4) type of paper

4) time on paper

5) type of paper

5) time on paper

7. Standardized variable review:

Did you successfully standardize all the variables you planned to?
If not, explain why not.
Yes. I used the same type of paper, made sure to time things well, and the fade test out on one sheet so it
was all exposed to the same amount of light.
8. Extraneous variable review:
Were there other factors (that you did not originally list) that you think could have affected your results?
Identify them and explain your answer.
I do not think so.

Impact on Results
9. Think about all the ways the implementation of your experiment differed from your initial plans (your
answers to questions above).
Discuss how these changes may make your project stronger and/or make it weaker (i.e. make your
results more reliable or less reliable).
I think that I could have repeated my tests but I do not think the results would change. This could make
my project slightly weaker but my data is a correct representation of the markers I tested.

Reflection on learning
In August, y’all shared your thoughts on what the point of school is. Many of your responses involved
building skills. You may recognize some of them in this list below, which has a few of my top priorities for
skills to build in this class.

10. Read over the skills and indicate with a comment where you feel you are with each, at this point in the
year.

I think I have I’m making progress. I’m struggling: I see This is a very weak
very strong I feel pretty good some improvement area for me. I don’t feel
skills in this about it. but it’s really hard. I’ve improved at all.
