NUCLEAR ENERGY - AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE
Man has always been curious. In his quest for development, new sources of energy were
discovered. Among these, an alternative source of energy called Nuclear Energy came into light.
The nucleus of an atom has immense energy and if used for constructive purpose can definitely
When two or more small nuclei combine together, under special conditions, to get a comparatively
bigger nucleus nuclear fusion takes place.
4^ H>i He + 2^ e + Energy
This is the nuclear fusion reaction taking place inside sun. Where four hydrogen nuclei combine
with themselves to form a helium nucleus, two positrons and enormous energy.
The nuclear fission reaction can be carried out when a slow neutron (thermal neutron) disturbs the
delicate balance of U-nucleus and breaks it into smaller ones. In this reaction the particle i.e.
neutron which initiates the reaction is also produced in the reaction itself to continue the reaction
on its own. That is why it is called nuclear fission chain reaction. This reaction may be controlled
or uncontrolled. The controlled nuclear reaction is carried out in a nuclear reactor for generating
electricity using heavy water as moderator, liquid sodium as coolant and cadmium & boron rods
as control rods. All these things work together to carry out a controlled fission reaction. The result
of an uncontrolled nuclear fission chain reaction was witnessed by the world during Second World
War in form of atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The basic science behind both the
reactions is same, they only differ in the way they are carried out.

II.NUCLEAR POWER FOR WAR AND PEACE
The emergence of nuclear weapons has been a source of big impact on the international power
structure. The initial U.S. monopoly changed to bipolarity in international relations when USSR also
became successful in securing nuclear weapons. Now with the entry of France, Britain & China,
The emergence of nuclear armament race between the two superpowers during 1950's intensified
the cold war and became a major factor of international relations in cold war period.
Today the nations possessing nuclear weapons have acquired the overkill capacity i.e. capacity to
destroy the entire world several times. Such nations have become capable of achieving their
interests in the world even in complete disregard to the opinion and wishes of other states. The non-
nuclear states have come to live in a state of defencelessness and are quite helpless in securing
their interests vis-a-vis the nuclear powers. The presence of nuclear weapons has also in a way
become a blessing in disguise because it has created a peace in the shadow of terror i.e. a peace
imposed by technology, a peace of preparedness for a total war, a tense peace and a peace
characterised by fear, inequalities, risks and distrust as a nuclear war would be a totally destructive

protection and environmental rights and duties of the people. Under the
Directive Principle of State Policy, Article 48-A of the Constitution, enjoins
that the State shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and

PROJECT TIGER
It was initiated in 1972 and has contributed to the conservation of
tigers. This project is sponsored by Ministry of Environment, Forest
and Climate Change. About 47 tiger reserves situated in more than 17
regions including Corbett National Park and Ranthambore National
Park are part of this project which conducts assessment of number of
tigers, their habitat, hunting habits under the supervision of the Tiger
Task Force.

KANHA NATIONAL PARK
The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha provided
inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel "Jungle Book". The Kanha National
Park in Madhya Pradesh came into being in 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger
Reserve, created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Park's landmark achievement is the
preservation of the rare hardground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near
extinction.
