Courses

All courses are available full- or part-time, except Metal Additive Manufacturing, which is only
full-time.

Advanced Materials (accredited - see page 9) MSc/PgDip/PgCert


This course provides a fundamental understanding of materials’ properties, their
processing and computer-based design procedures, which are essential for product
commercialisation. It also includes the development of new materials and the
improvement and application of current materials in new and novel structures.

Aerospace Materials MSc/PgDip/PgCert


Students learn how to improve and develop materials for aviation applications, such as on
airframes and aero engines - including the increased use of smart and functional materials.
The course examines the development of new materials, the improvement of current
materials and their application in new and novel structures.

Manufacturing Technology and Management MSc/PgDip/PgCert


This course, developed by industry, addresses the high quality skills required by
manufacturers with competence in problem solving, commercial awareness and leadership
together with technical specialism. Technical pathways with elective modules enable
students to create a personalised package of learning.

Metal Additive Manufacturing (subject to University approval) MSc/PgDip/PgCert


This course provides students with the latest knowledge and skills for metal Additive
Manufacturing (AM) providing a great foundation for a future career. This includes AM
processes and their capabilities, designing AM systems, qualification, modelling and
materials. Practical experience will be gained through assignments and group and
individual projects in close collaboration with leading industrial end users.

Welding Engineering (accredited - see page 9) MSc/PgDip/PgCert


Welding is integral to the manufacture of a wide range of products. This course provides
the practical and theoretical knowledge required to become a welding engineer and
a materials and joining specialist. It covers modern welding techniques, automation,
metallurgy, materials science, welding processes, design, quality and related equipment.

Cranfield’s group project experience provides you with the opportunity to take responsibility
for a consultancy-type project while working under academic supervision.
Some recent projects include:
• Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) to provide reduced-cost prototype parts.
• Graphene oxide nanoparticles blended with a polymer to improve food shelf life.
• Chrome-plated damper rods in motorsport suspension systems to improve longevity.

Academic staff
You will be taught by a wide range of subject specialists from the
University and industry professionals who draw on their research
and industrial expertise to provide stimulating and informed input
to your learning experience. Here are some of the staff you will be
taught by:

Professor Jose Endrino, Head of Surface Engineering and Precision


Jose’s interests include generating new knowledge in coatings technology
and materials science of thin films and surfaces, in collaboration with leading
international groups and industry.

Dr Sue Impey, Senior Lecturer and Programme Director


Sue has over 20 years experience and expertise in surface science and engineering.
She coordinates the design and delivery of the Manufacturing technology and
materials programme. Sue also provides technical support to the University and
external clients in materials characterisation and surface analysis.

Professor John Nicholls, Professor of Coatings Technology


John has an international reputation for his work into high temperature surface
engineering, oxidation and high temperature corrosion, and has contributed to
important developments in the aerospace industry for more than 40 years.

Professor Stewart Williams, Professor of Welding Science and Engineering


Stewart came to Cranfield University after a 20-year career at BAE Systems. His
research in wire plus arc additive manufacture tackles issues in automation,
mechanical properties, residual stress and how to build complex structures. He
developed a commercial laser-based wire making method.

The MSc award of the Advanced Materials and the Welding Engineering courses
are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Royal
Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and The Welding Institute (TWI). The Welding
Engineering MSc is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Global Manufacturing Leadership Scholarship


A limited number of scholarships will be competitively awarded according to academic
ability and leadership potential for 2019 entry. These will fund the course tuition fee plus
£1,000 towards study cost and are open to applicants on the courses listed in this brochure
(Erasmus funded students aren’t eligible). The aim is to contribute to the educational
progression of global professionals required to lead manufacturing into the future.

Applications will open on 1 September 2018 and close on 15 March 2019.
