I was asked to research a country in my 11th grade Spanish for Spanish Speakers class and put
Guatemala, my home country, as the topic of my project. We were asked to research many
aspects of the culture including food, music and popular traditions. We also had to research
recognized individuals that had originated from the country we covered as well as the famous
geographical regions.
I threw myself into research right away and spent a lot of time preparing for the
presentation, I had even asked my mother to look over it and asked her several questions about
certain aspects of my projects. The project meant a lot to me because I came to America at a
very young age which meant that I had little to no time to experience that world. When coming
to family gatherings, seeing people that had just arrived from there made me feel like I was an
outsider looking into another world. Which was true in a sense because lifestyle is different
there, but it made me feel more foreign to my family. This project gave me the opportunity to
learn more about my home and what life might have been like had we stayed.
The project taught me that thorough research and presentation was important, depending
on the content of one's slides. People may half-pay attention unless there's something that catches
their attention. I did my best to work on the presentation and drew most of my visuals, adding
cartoony elements to the slides to make them seem less barren as I elaborated what my slides
looking at the content as much as I'd enjoyed making a couple of the visuals.
