Rhetoric and developing the facets of rhetoric in a meaningful manner is essential to
the development of a good piece of writing or media. It is more prevalent in argumentative
pieces as the proper integration of rhetoric into an argument facilitates a more convincing
portrayal of the view that is taken. It is with ethos, logos, and pathos blended together that
a respectable argument is built that would be convincing to those who have more
knowledge on the topic. With the topic in general, knowing the context and all that is
involved around it is necessary; this forms the rhetorical situation which entails all the
details of the piece itself as well as outside information that is related or impacts the piece
as well. Knowing this additional information is paramount to developing a complete
understanding of the work as it can tell important details that explain why a writer wrote
the work or what outside events show their face in the work itself. Taking into account of
all these facets of writing allows relevant and compelling arguments to form as without the
rhetorical situation, a sound understanding of the topic is not obtained for one. Also,
focusing too heavily on one appeal may detract from an argument due to the lack of logic, a
reason to consider the argument, or interest developed. A piece of writing must take into
account what it is trying to accomplish and balance ethos, logos, and pathos to match that
expectation in order to further the argument.

The three genres being compared here all focus on the current issue of Brexit, but

the way each piece goes about approaching the subject is vastly different. For instance, the

length and depth at which each piece talks about Brexit is a key demonstrator of the

differences between the genres. The blog is organized in an essentially reactionary ramble

type of format where the blogger is venting about how idiotic the UK government is due to

their inability to come to a consensus about anything. This ramble goes on and on and

includes many first and second person pronouns which introduce an aspect of bias fitting

for a personal political blog.

The news article, on the other hand, tries to be as brief as possible as its task is only

to report on the failure to reach a consensus in Parliament that recently occurred to the

people. It does this reporting well and separates the primary events from another section

which includes political analysis about Brexit. Doing this allows the article to remain

neutral when reporting, but also introduce an informed opinion on the matter in order to

try to better explain Brexit events to the public; outside commentary does introduce bias,

but separating the sections allows the news organization to be as neutral as possible. For

the diction of the news article, no personal pronouns are used in order to be objective in

reporting except in direct quotations from Parliament members. This impersonal nature is

fitting for the news as it appears to readers that only the plain information is being

reported with evidence to support the assertions through the quotations.

Finally with the scholarly article, a different approach is taken compared to the

other two. This change stems from the length of the discourse as the article goes into much
Cheng 3

greater depth about Brexit and the origins which led up to this event. It has entire sections

dedicated to the factors that led up to Brexit alongside of analysis of voting records in order

to determine that Brexit may be representative of the sentiments building elsewhere. This

analysis in the paper goes on for twenty pages and in these pages, the author remains

objective and professional when describing factors. The author only uses personal

pronouns when they reach their own analysis as that point is when the author is

contributing to the discussion rather than relaying information. All of these features are

fitting for a scholarly article and they are quite unique when compared to the other two

genre types.

I’m planning to explore the topic of how women react to forms of oppression as well
as the perspectives that women take on the overarching topic of women’s rights. The latter
entails if individual perspectives on the topic are being drowned out by the movement as a
whole in a form of overgeneralization. I think these are adequately sized topics that I can
cover with depth when I explore them completely. The topic of women’s rights came to
mind as I have been focusing on the genre throughout the school year so far with many of
the novels I read so far such as The Bell Jar, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Medea focusing on a
woman as the protagonist of the novel. As well as these novels, I have written a few essays
surrounding the matter as well this year so I figured that I should just continue exploring
and learning more about the topic by finishing out the year on it.
The rhetorical situation surrounding women’s rights is very complicated,
convoluted, and drawn out over centuries. It is something that has recently emerged but
over the past decade, the fervor has increased with groups striving for more equity
between sexes. Women’s rights or gender equality as a whole has the goal of breaking
down the established prejudices that one sex or the other is better or worse than the other
and achieving equality in wages, rights, opportunities, etc. It is a political issue with
legislation such as the 19th amendment, Title IX, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 being
prime examples. It is also a social issue resulting from physiological differences between
the sexes and the subsequent belief that males are superior to females because of the
strength difference. Women’s rights is an extremely important issue that affects almost
everyone in some way due to its relation to whole sexes. Due to this expansiveness, the
topic bleeds into several other issues as well such as education favoring one sex over the
other, only males being in the draft, legislation targeting females with the opinions of a
male majority congress, insurance price differences, and expectational differences. For the
desire of equity for all, this topic holds immense importance.

Letters to the editors of a newspaper are interesting pieces of writing that reveal the

thoughts and ideas of those reading the paper and feel it is necessary for them to comment

on a topic. However, as these individuals are from the general public and may not be the

most well informed on the issue they are writing about, certain mistakes in reasoning are

bound to appear.

The first letter to the Repository approaches the issue of raising the gas tax in Ohio

in order to continue road construction. This piece though is more of a rant on how the

politicians in charge are idiots instead of a well-supported argument on why the writer

believes these opinions. It starts out with a case of oversimplification out of the gate with

blaming Gov. DeWine as the only person who wants the gas tax and therefore is the person

responsible for this mess. However, this response is only used to shift blame on the easiest

person to target, the person on top of the Ohio government, and does not take into account

the numerous experts and advisors who convinced the governor the tax is necessary. The

letter goes on with more fallacies such as non sequitur reasoning, but the major ones stem

from fallacies of emotion. Name calling is the big one with the letter or rather the rant

ending with, “think before we vote for those idiots. Yes, I said it. They are crooks and

thieves.” (Campanelli 2019) Through this name calling, it is shown that the writer just

wishes to express her great disdain for these politicians without going more into depth on

how they’re are “crooks and thieves”.

The second letter is also to the Repository, but this time focuses on Sen. John

McCain’s death and how it is dirty that politicians are using the death as a tool. It begins
Cheng 6

right off the bat with name calling through the phrase “To the spineless masses

masquerading as patriots” which details immediately the overwhelming hate that the

writer holds on this issue. The argument that this writer presents is not a bad one in any

stretch of the imagination, but certain aspects pull the reader back to acknowledging that

yes this is an opinion piece. Another example of this is the false and outlandish analogy in

the form of “I suggest you go to any world history classroom and plead the case we should

not pass judgment on Adolf Hitler because he is dead” which is so out there in its

connection that I had to take a double take. Here, the writer is essentially comparing Sen.

McCain to Adolf Hitler which I do not think is the most reason of comparisons. Through this

analogy, it becomes pretty evident that the writer of this letter has quite the hatred for the

former Senator which is confirmed with the name calling at the end describing McCain as a

“bloodthirsty ‘neocon’”(Jenkins 2019). In all, these letters to the editor are interesting

pieces of writing which reveal a little insight on the local citizens’ views with certain issues,

but the letters must be taken lightly as they are only opinion pieces.

Pt. 1
1. The first few lines represent researching a topic as when a person first begins diving
into a topic, they are surrounded by the countless forms of research that have
already been conducted by those who have priorly explored the area. In essence, a
person is arriving “late” to the topic and is thrown into a confusing, jumbled mess
which they have to find their bearings in and eventually contribute their own voice
to the discussion.
2. Listening is incredibly important to argumentative writing as it allows the writer to
become informed on the topic before they start adding to the discussion. It allows
them to get a feel for the discussion and why some individuals side with one side or
the other. Through this, the writer becomes less ignorant on the subject and
becomes able to develop their own voice on the matter which will be used in their
writing.
3. “Put your oar in” is an idiom with the meaning of contributing one’s own thoughts to
the discussion as that is what is happening in the metaphor with the person
listening in on the ongoing discussion/argument and getting a feel for it. They then
put their own views into the discussion when they “put your oar in”.
4. The “someone answers…” sentence relates to argumentative writing as it
represents the differing viewpoints that are held with every argument and them
conflicting with one another when determining which one is the most correct. In an
argumentative essay, the writer has to answer/develop their own view on the area
of discussion by building on the priorly established knowledge while also refuting
other views in order to show that theirs is the most correct.
Reflection-
The metaphor was what I expected it to be about and was pretty simple to follow
with its representation of the argumentative writing process. It just makes sense to
research and listen in on a topic before formulating an opinion as one would not like to
look like a buffoon when writing. Creating a view after researching and developing the
conversation even more is how an argument is supposed to work. Use good evidence and
properly support the claim and presto one has a good argument. Nothing new, but it is
useful knowledge when dealing with arguments.

Pt. 2
China is changing rapidly today as its population becomes more diversified in

wealth statuses. There are now not one billion customers, instead, there are segments of

the populations such as the middle class to focus on as China’s society becomes more

stratified. This change is occurring as more poor and rural people move into cities and

begin earning more money which moves them into the middles class through being able to

have more purchasing power. It is expected that the middle class in China will rise to more

than 60% in 2016, which means companies cannot miss this growth. However, what is

considered to be middle class is difficult to determine as only focusing on income does not

reveal the whole picture on the targeted population so other methods are employed.

Understanding the specific needs and purchasing power of a group is thus incredibly

important to properly advertise. China’s middle class will continue its upward trend in

wealth and companies need to prepare for that as well with changing tastes for name

brands occurring with more wealth. From this comes more segmentation into categories of

consumers with: early heavy buyers, the smarts, the quality-oriented, trend followers,

driven business people, and value seekers. All these groups have their own desires and

understanding them is paramount to successful business when selling to the middle class.

From this reading, it appears that China is following mainly the same pathway of

development that many other countries such as the US followed during their transition into

modern society. The United States also experienced this massive boom in the middle class,

especially after the world wars, and companies had to adapt alongside this boom in order

to survive. Now with China going through this same process, the companies who

successfully targeted the right consumers during previous rapid socio-economic

Cheng 9

development are able to apply the strategies they used previously on this new market. The

article covers some of the strategies that businesses are using to successfully target China’s

middle class in segmenting the class into further categories. It worked in the past and it will

work now in China.

Pt. 1
Evidence plays a crucial role in a piece of writing as it is what is used to support a
person’s assertions in order to create a convincing argument. Without evidence, the points
that a writer makes just become baseless claims that have no real merit behind them as
they cannot verify the claims. At that point, the writing only consists of what the writer
believes is true and any reader with a semblance of intelligence would immediately
question the validity of what the writer is saying. With evidence, the writer establishes a
basis on what their arguments will be built on, thus building some credibility. This
credibility is furthered by utilizing reputable sources such as primary accounts, academic
articles, and the such. Ethos is increased with these sources along with the logos that is
developed through properly incorporating sources into an argument.
What type of audience that the work is directed at also plays a role in the type and
style of writing that a writer should take. Writing for personal friends and writing for
academic peers would have immense differences between the two in terms of effort put in
and the level of professionalism that is expected in each. An academic piece has much
higher expectations on it for its level of writing with expectations of a well-supported claim
being presented that has relevant evidence backing it. A higher level of diction and also few
stylistic mistakes are also associated with this type of writing. If the audience is just friends,
then much of the prior mentioned things are not needed, but with well-informed readers
on the other side of academic works, they are extremely necessary for a convincing piece of
writing to be crafted.
With all this stems a task on the writer and me when I write of essentially meeting
the expectations that the audience sets on the work. As I alluded to earlier, when I write I
determine who I will be writing for and that gives me the formality of writing that I will
take such as if I use personal pronouns or not. I then see what genre the piece will fall into
such as analysis, memoir, response, etc. and that sets into motion formulating how I should
convey the message that will be contained in the writing. This includes the balance of ethos,
logos, and pathos that I will use as with an analysis, ethos and logos will take precedence
over pathos which is not really necessary with analysis essays. Overall, the needs of the
audience and the type of writing needs to be taken in by the writer to determine the right
path to take.

Pt. 2
Movies or films are an easy source of entertainment for much of the public as there

are a wide variety to match any taste and the films are easily accessible. This type of media

is for enjoyment, but some may argue that films only achieve success if the films convey

deeper meanings beyond their basic plot or goal of entertaining audiences. This demand

for visual merit is similar to that involved with literature and its literary merit, but many

times a work does not need to be deep to be successful as the audience only wants a good

experience while indulging in such works. Pacific Rim is the movie I chose to watch and is a

key example of this idea as the film does not subvert any expectations or develop beyond

what is expected, instead, it plays off of the formula developed with the Godzilla series and

has giant robots fighting giant monsters to the audience’s great enjoyment.

Pacific Rim is just a fun movie to watch as there is something satisfying about

watching giant anthropomorphized creatures duking it out on the big screen. Action leads

the way in this sci-fi monster film as the strongest aspect which pulls all else forwards with

it. On the other hand, the plot and the character development are not worth much note as

there is not much there frankly if the aspects are looked at under the microscope. From the

giant plot holes involving why the giant monsters are attacking to the weird romantic

relationship that tries to be developed during the film, it can be seen that the film is quite

shallow in depth. However, the creators of Pacific Rim never intended the movie to move

beyond the shallows as the film was always intended to use its thrilling action scenes to

draw in the audience that the creators are targeting. This audience is not seeking a

tear-jerking film full of revelations, they want excitement and pure entertainment which

are both properties that Pacific Rim does do very well. Through the audience’s expectations
Cheng 12

being properly met by the film, Pacific Rim is successful and this success can be seen also

through its great box office performance.

Journal #5
Pt. 1
The topic that I am focusing on is women’s rights and the voice that women have in
that conversation. Women’s rights as a whole is an extremely encompassing topic all
centering around the drive for equality between the sexes. While true equality may be near
impossible, it is necessary to continually strive for that goal and along the way, a state of
equity can be reached. In this continuous toil that has lasted for centuries, women have
earned in America important rights such as suffrage as well as establishing themselves as
individuals that have their own free will through gaining important positions of society
instead of staying at home. It is only through campaigning for women’s rights that these
concepts came to a head and legislation such as the 19th and Title IX made them more
possible. The smaller, more narrow topic that I mentioned entails examining the individual
perspectives that are contained in this giant topic of women’s rights. I wish to see that heed
is given to the individual in this conversation rather than only drowning them out in a
broad overgeneralization and lumping the women into one group. The stakeholders on this
topic are simple; essentially everybody as changing the rights and the balance of power of
half the human race will affect the other half as well. However, women, of course, are the
key stakeholders as this drive directly affects the opportunities and rights that are afforded
to them.
There is much conversation surrounding women’s rights constantly, but over the
past few years it has definitely flared up with protesters desiring equality sooner rather
than later and also showing they will not be complacent. The Me2 movement and many
women’s marches demonstrate this attitude with Me2 showing how common sexual
assault is in American society and how it should not be treated as ok with politicians being
complacent in the matter. Another major stickler that has been around for decades is the
fight over abortion which is not directly tied to women’s rights but is closely related with
many arguing that women should have self-determination over the matter on deciding to
have an abortion or not and the decision should not rest on a majority male legislative
body. With these, there are countless more issues pertaining to the matter.
My stance on the overarching topic of women’s rights is we should continue pushing
for more balance and fairness between the sexes. This is because I know many women in
my life that are just as capable as myself in many matters and they should have the same
opportunities that I have to achieve goals without restrictions. My stance on the smaller
topic is that the debate on women’s rights has grown to a point where rampant
overgeneralization of the sex occurs and results in individual perspectives getting drowned
out by the masses. This belief comes from history with African Americans and any group
trying for equality becoming bunched together as one “people” who are the same as each
Cheng 14

other when there are countless opinions and differences present. Doing this makes it easier
to target and crush the movement as there is only one “people” to focus their and the
public’s attention on. It also comes from the state of culture that is present with the masses
preferring simpler headlines that focus on the big issue and not the minor details or
differences.
Cheng 15

Pt. 2
Ad

Nike’s recent ad displays a picture of Colin Kaepernick in black and white with just

two sentences saying “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything”

alongside the Nike logo and slogan. This ad is interesting in the fact that it presents Nike in

a specific light that may damage the company’s appeal to some, but also displays Nike’s

integrity to others through supporting and recognizing the protests against racial

injustices. Usually, companies would want to keep neutral on political topics such as racial

inequality in order to retain profits, but Nike instead uses Kaepernick to champion this

cause through ads such as this. The ad shows that Nike believes in Kaepernick’s ideals

which is polarizing to many of its potential consumers with a portion vehemently opposing

the company after this ad and a portion vehemently supporting the company due to their

displayed support against injustice.

The ad itself and the elements used in it also are used well to present a specific

message about racial tension and the company as well. The black and white colors of the ad

are fitting for the topic at hand with the conflict stemming from the continuous

mistreatment of African-Americans by white Americans. This color scheme also is

simplistic in design as the ad does not want vibrancy to detract away from the message it is

trying to convey. Moving onto Kaepernick himself, he has a determined look to him staring

forwards directly at the audience of the ad. This feature has the impact of showing

Kaepernick’s belief and resolve in the cause he is spreading. It shows that, as the message

says, even after losing everything with his NFL career, Kaepernick still has his head up high

due to his determination to reach his goal of ending racial injustices. The “Just do it” slogan
Cheng 16

of Nike and the logo take a secondary role in the ad, but the two features tell the audience

to “just do it” and follow their beliefs, just like Kaepernick and Nike do in the ad. Through

this ad, Nike is portrayed as a company who is for equality and allows people to follow

their beliefs. In the end, this favorable impression developed outweighs the short, negative

reaction at the start of the ad campaign which shows the success of the ad.

Interviewing-

● I’ll be doing a face to face interview as it is more personal and I can better perceive
social cues on where to lead the conversation.
● I’ll be interviewing Mrs. Rudd as my topic involves social justice and more
specifically the perception of the current women’s rights movement. Mrs. Rudd
works well for this topic as she is very knowledgeable in this field and has a great
connection to social justice through the Social Justice club she is the advisor of.
● I hope to learn through this interview the perspective of someone more involved
with social justice and if they support the current methodologies that are being
employed to try and force a change in women’s rights. I want to learn if what is
being done currently is the best way to achieve change or if there is a better way to
create a more equal society.

Questions-

● In what fashion are you related to social justice and/or women’s rights movements?
● What kind of expertise or experience do you have in this field of study?
● Do you support the current movements for more equality in women’s rights?
○ Is this support publicly expressed or do you just privately support the drive?
● What are your current views on the women’s rights movement and the goals that
they are trying to achieve?
○ Do you think that the movement is focusing on the correct issues or are there
more important battles to fight?
○ Are the groups championing women’s rights approaching the fight in the
right way in regards to the strategy or methodology they employ?
○ Should the strategy be changed in some way? What ways do you think?
○ Is it wiser to take a more passive approach or a more active approach with
examples such as MLK vs Malcolm X?
○ Should the movement be more centralized under a figurehead to spearhead
the push forwards for greater equality?
● How important do you think movements such as these are for the country?
○ Should there be a push for Americans, especially younger Americans, to
become more educated on topics such as social justice? If yes, why so?
● What are some potential detractions or negatives that stem from these movements?
○ Should these negative be ignored for the positive aspects that result from
these battles?
Cheng 18

○ Does the nation as a whole get harmed in any way such as the divisive nature
that may result from some of the moral arguments on areas such as abortion?
● Are there individuals or groups that oppose such movements and do you hold any
understanding/sympathy for their positions?
Survey-

● I will be using an online survey through google forms.

● I hope to learn the general public sentiment towards the current women’s rights
movements and if there is a correlation between the genders on their support for it.

Questions-

● What is your gender?

● Do you support the current women’s rights movement which involves campaigns
such as MeToo and women’s marches?
● How important to you is this fight for women’s rights?
● Are there any other issues that should take precedence over this issue? If so, please
list them.
● Is the current method of campaigning for women’s rights the proper or best way to
go about it in your opinion?
● What is your current view of someone who is a part of this movement? Is it negative
or positive?
● Is there a general mold for the type of person that supports women's rights? These
include possible stereotypes that represent the group.
● If yes for the mold, do you think this predetermined form is beneficial to what is
trying to be achieved by the movement?
● Should the movement cater to obtaining as much public support as public, even if it
means that certain key tenets of the movement are greatly weakened in order to
draw in a larger receptive audience?
● In your opinion, is the current movement detrimental to America as a whole
through problems such as pulling attention away from other issues or creating more
divide in the nation?
Cheng 19

Pt. 2

One of the many problems plaguing the nation today, and especially states who

experience harsh winters, is an infrastructure network that is constantly crumbling apart.

After countless years of dereliction and political infighting, the state of highways and

bridges across the nation are in grave need of repair. Ohio is a great example of this need

and while the state tries to address the issue with new construction, another issue springs

up in the form of this construction never completing due to the lack of budget. Here lies the

current issue being debated in Ohio of increasing the gas tax in order to continue to fund

road construction. Twenty-eight cents added to the tax is necessary to keep rebuilding road

infrastructure, but most of the state’s lawmakers do not agree with such a change and only

propose an eight and a half-cent increase. Even though Republicans do not agree with

increasing taxes, this increase is necessary to the survival of the state’s infrastructure and if

lawmakers are so narrow-minded that they cannot see this issue, these representatives

deserve to not be re-elected.

It is just foolish for lawmakers to only consider the desires of the present population

without thinking of the future impacts that such a decision will have. Even if the general

public constantly wishes for fewer taxes, there reaches a point where the government does

not have the funds available to provide the services to its citizens that a government is

supposed to provide. Taxes fund services and without taxes, the citizens do not receive

these benefits anymore. The issue of infrastructure has reached this point as without this

new tax, construction that is planned as well as works already in progress will cease. The

result of ceasing construction is roads that continuously fall apart in the winter without
Cheng 20

being rebuilt in the coming spring and highway project to alleviate congestion and rebuild

bridges never being realized. The future citizens will not be pleased with this state of

affairs and will complain about how awful their infrastructure is. If a person searches for a

reason why Ohio infrastructure is so horrible, then they will find it all stems from the

failure to pass an adequate gas tax due to the idiocy of Ohioan politicians.

● Nope, everything outlined in this reading seems to be about what I expected for the
expectations in college writing.
● I will establish my credibility by taking a professional tone in the writing by
avoiding imputing bias into the essay and keeping the writing as objective as
possible. This credibility will be furthered by presenting good and relevant primary
data alongside analysis for the data in order to have a sound argument. Taking into
mind the potentially hot-button nature of the issue, avoiding stepping on a landmine
and remaining objective while writing will also help.

Topic for Discussion-
1. My topic is the perception of the current women’s rights movement and whether or
not the general public supports various aspects of the movement. These include the
stances of the movement and the effectiveness as well. To gather data I used a
survey to gain a broader overview of the topic and then an interview with a more
knowledgeable party to gain another perspective.
2. The conclusions that I came to from the data are that all the people surveyed
suggest that the current women’s movement should change in some way. This belief
contrasts with the interview where Mrs. Rudd agrees on the current direction of the
movement and suggest it keeps pushing forwards on the path it’s on.
3. I found it interesting that all who were surveyed stated that the movement’s
methods should be either entirely changed or slightly tweaked. This finding was
surprising as some of the people that I surveyed are very left-leaning and I expected
them to agree with the current ways.
4. The next time I conduct primary research I would probably decide to survey a larger
range and body of individuals to get an even better set of data that more aptly
matches the overall beliefs of the general public.
Research Question-
1. My research question is whether or not the women’s movement should be “women
only” or if men can also be a part of the movement.
2. I’m interested in this topic as this whole semester has revolved around the
perception of women’s movements for me, but I never actually looked into the
actual movement and what it consists of. Also as the movement deals with the
gender gap, looking at the gap within the movement itself seems interesting to me. It
is debatable as there are two options to choose from and there is legitimate reason
for the movement to be only women due to the injustices that men have forced on
women since forever.
3. The people who would benefit are those involved directly in the movement as there
may be internal strife about the stance that should be taken on having men be in the
movement as well. This research will hopefully shed more light on the issue which
will then lead to a resolution.
4. Some terms include: Men in women’s rights/movements, men’s rights, the effects of
women’s rights, women’s rights are human rights, and women’s rights
5. I think the best types of sources for this topic are discussion journals that present
their own view on the issues and then I can form my own informed opinion from
those sources.

Collaborative Experiences-
1. What was helpful when working with a group was having either a set leader to
direct the other members of the group in the right direction or having a distinctly
set direction already established for the project from the first day. These help the
group stay focused and not have as much confusion.
2. It is frustrating when a member of a group does not do their share of the project, but
this situation did not occur to me during the project. Instead it was relatively
smooth sailing and I had no issues with the members of my group.
3. My expectations for my group members are simple: the other members will
communicate properly with each other, will not be afraid to ask for help or have a
question, and complete their part of the project on time.
4. I’ll bring to the team my work ethic so there will be no worry about me getting my
part of the project done. I’ll also bring my leadership skills to hopefully guide the
group down the path to success.
