Year 5 BEd PRE-LEARNING ASSESSMENT (PLA) ELEMENTARY

PART THREE (B.) - CLASS REVIEW

Class Review
Teacher: J.S. Class: K
Classroom Strengths: What are the strengths of the class? What are the positive things about
this group as a whole?

There are 18 students in this class and they enjoy being at school. The students are working
well to make friends. They have a good vocabulary and fine motor skills. The class has the
basic skills to take care of themselves (zippers, buttons, etc.). The class as a whole is working
hard to learn and follow the routines. Anther positive about this class is that they are mostly all
interested in learning. They also are bonding well with the teachers.

Classroom Needs: What are your concerns about the class as a whole? What accommodations
will you need to make in your planning or managing the class based on the needs of the class
as a whole?

The concerns of this class as a whole is that they are fairly low academically and all have a
wide range of abilities. In language arts they are still working on letter sounds/recognition,
rhyming, concepts of print. For math they are developing an understanding of patterns and
numbers 5-10. At this point they are not all where they should be so we will continue to work,
review and practice our letters and number sense. The class is also deregulated and struggles
with focus. Many students are “not ready” or not exposed to expectations. There are six
students in particular who can be very defiant (DE, OK, DP, AH, KT). When it comes to
planning I will accommodate all learners by scaffolding my lessons. I will make them very
basic to start and add complexity for those who are ready. When it comes to management
strategies for the class as a whole I will continue to follow my sponsor teachers class
expectations and if a student can not uphold them I will send them to their desk if we are on
the carpet. If the behavior does not improve throughout the day then they will have to make up
time during centers to draw a picture for home demonstrating their expectations for behavior. I
will also be very aware in my management of how I build the students energy level into my
day.

How will you develop a rapport with this class – what are the key considerations?

In order to build rapport with this class I think it is extremely important to spend quality time
getting to know Damon, Ada and, Declan. These students require a bit more redirection then
others when it comes to academics and or behavior. I am going to consider how I can support
these learners to the best of my ability and continue to build a respectful relationship with
them in order to create a more inclusive classroom environment for everyone. The class as a
whole is very open and welcoming which makes it easy to attach to.

What else is relevant to your time in class?

It is also very important that I am aware of the huge range of ability and behavior in this class.
This will help my management ability as well as my differentiation within lessons.
