point shots

INTRODUCTION
McCluskey, Schneider, Sensor 2

In our project we are seeing if there is a correlation to hand

size and ability to play basketball. To test this we are using an
experiment and measuring students hands and having them shoot 3 point
shots until they make a basket. Our hypothesis is that which is a
weak positive correlation.

DATA SET

Population is defined as a finite or infinite collection of items

under consideration. In our experiment the population is the students
attending DuBois Area High School. Sample is defined as a small part
or quantity intended to show what the whole is like. In our project
the sample is the students that we selected to shoot 3 point shots and
their hands measured. Variable is described as any characteristic of
an individual. In this experiment, our explanatory variable is the
size of the hand. The response variable is number of 3 point shots it
takes to score. The hand width is the explanatory variable because it
is controlling the number of 3 point shots it takes. The 3 point
shots are the response because they are dependent on the hand width.

INTERPRET R & R²

Correlation describes direction and strength of a straight line

relationship. In our project R= -.371, and the R2=.138 which means any
prediction has a 13.8%. The R value is negative which means that as
the hand size increases the ability to make a 3 point shot goes down.
R=-.371 so the correlation is moderate meaning the correlation is
somewhat valid, and the strength is moderate. Coefficient of
Determination is defined as a variation in values of Y that explains
by least squares regression of Y on X (r2 is the variable).

PREDICTION

Least squares regression line is defined as a straight line that

predicts the y values for a given x. The equation of the regression
line is y = -0.607x + 19.94.
1. Y = 19.935 - .607x.
2. Y = 19.935 - .607(27)
3. Y = 19.935 - 16.389

4. Y = 3.546
Our prediction was R = .375 which has a moderate validity which
means the bigger your hands are the better you are at basketball. If
your hand size is bigger, then we predict that you will be a better
basketball player. Any prediction we make has a 13.8% variance.

LURKING VARIABLES

Lurking variables are defined as a being neither explanatory or

nor response and is a separate variable that lurks unseen and effects
your results. Some lurking variables in our project include:Height
which is a common response, ability to play basketball which is also a
common response, and the type of basketball we used (girls) which is a
confounding variable.
CONCLUSION

Our hypothesis was that the bigger the hands the better they can
play basketball. Our hypothesis was incorrect, in fact, it was the
opposite, R= -.371 we expected R= .375. We also, based on our R
prediction, that it would have moderate strength. That prediction was
somewhat right although being negative rather than positive.
