The views of Sixty six teachers (32 men, 34 women), who voluntarily participated in this
study, were determined by the questionnaire with 36 items which was prepared by the
researchers examining the questioners of previous studies. The researchers used SPSS Version
10.0 in all statistical procedures such as descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test and independent
sample t-test.
It is found out in the study that majority of Turkish PE teachers considered the PE lesson
curriculum as an insufficient. The 24.4% women PE teachers believed that command style is
more preferably effective than the other style; however 43.8% men PE teachers claimed that
practice style is more preferably effective. According to the research, 35.3% of women and
31.3% of men teachers used command style most frequently in their classroom. 64.7% of women
and 34.4% men teachers reported that they preferred expository teaching strategies and there was
a significant gender difference in preference of teaching strategies. The present findings were
similar to other related studies even in the other country like America. They mostly used
command and practice methods in their lesson and they preferred teacher rather than student-
centered teaching strategies. The current Turkish physical education curriculum was renewed by
Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education for primary and Secondary, which aims to
increase students’ awareness of their own learning through exposing them in a holistic
experiences enriched by various instructional strategies and materials. It emphases the use of

constructivist rather than behaviorist approaches and focus on student-centered strategies. The
research shows that there was an incongruity between PE teacher’s views, preferences and
Turkish PE Curriculum suggestions about teaching methods for PE classes. The reason of this
incongruity may be not discussing new PE curriculum with a wider range of skate holders in
developing process.
The authors’ expertise lies in the educational development of physical education. They
were able to contribute for the improvement of the curriculum used in teaching the area. His
findings widened the teaching preference of every instructor. His aimed is to create an open-
wide optimal mastery for both teachers and learners. Personally, it is not on the teaching strategy
or the learning style that the students have but the precedence of learning is based on the
readiness of the learner. It is because the finding says it is neither about the gender nor the style
but the appropriate technique based on the learning situation.
His expertise in the development of Physical Education curriculum concedes the needs of
both teachers and learners. We learn because of our open-mined character to receive information
and new ideas. As a professor, they aim for updated and relevant teaching strategies based from
the diverse learners and ever changing world. Like an open world and open mind the professors
(The researcher) and would be professor (We, Graduate School students) must be equipped
intellectually, emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially. They should not just be engage
but rather immersed in a way that they themselves are always in the process of transformative
development.
We conducted our class observation in one of the Physical Education classes of college
in Ateneo de Naga University last Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 6 o’clock in the afternoon. It was
an exciting class observation because their lesson was all about learning judo martial arts.
Majority of the class are men and they all know the positions and steps of doing it because their
teacher already taught them the sport from their last meeting. They were given time to practice
the basic of judo with their partner, and after an hour of practice the teacher call their names
by partner to demonstrate the basic skills in front of the class. Their performance serves as a
practical examination in their P.E. class with Sir JP.
1. What teaching strategy/ies was/were used by the teacher? Describe how he applied it?
The teaching strategies that were used by the teacher are the command and
practice. The teacher taught the basic skills of the sport to the students during
their previous P.E. class meeting. On the day of our observation, they were ask
to practice the skills taught to them with their assigned partner and perform it as
their final examination in P.E. The command style was done when the teacher
gives instruction to the students of what they are going to do about the task.
And practice style was done when the teacher gives time to the students to
practice the skills taught to them.
2. What types of assessment was/were used? Explain.
It was a summative assessment because they were performing all the knowledge
and skills taught by the teacher. Their performance serves as a practical
examination. Summative assessment is assessing the general knowledge or skills
taught to them.
3. What seemed to be new for you in delivery of his lesson?
The lesson topic was new for me because aside from I haven’t teaching martial
arts like judo; I haven’t experiencing teaching college level where your students
are responsible enough and more independent learners. For me, it is easy to
teach college students, they can easily follow instructions and understand the
essence of the task given to them. Unlike elementary and high school level, the
teacher must patiently give the direction repeatedly.
4. Was the approach or teaching style effective? Is the assessment aligned? Explain.
The command style used by the teacher is an effective style because the sport he
is teaching is a combative and the students need to follow the command or
instruction of the teacher before doing the sport. The command of the teacher is
needed in order to deliver the topic sound and safe, and also in order for the
students to be guided accordingly. The practice style is also effective because it

helps the students to practice and perform the skills correctly during their
practical examination in P.E. Practice enhances performance because practice
makes perfect.
5. How do you think this activity (class observation) will help you being enrolled in this
course?
As a teacher we need to be exposed with the different trends in teaching
Physical Education. This activity helps me to discover new approaches and
strategies in teaching; especially in teaching combative sports like judo, arnis,
and taekwondo and so on. It also gives me an opportunity to apply the
knowledge I learned from our EDPE213 class- the teaching styles and
assessments. Also, it helped me to realize that the teaching styles and
approaches are dependent on the lesson-topic, learning environment, types and
level of the learners. Since these are some of the factors that will affect the
learning process of the students. The class observation will serve as one of my
inspiration in choosing my strategies and type of assessment in teaching
students.
