Practice Problem for Second Long Examination

First Semester AY 2017-2018

Directions: Read and understand the problems given below. Provide ALL the necessary calculations and
assumptions for the problems. Write them in a blue book and submit the HARD COPY of your answers on or
before October 27, 2017 (Friday, 6PM).
1. A system of first order ordinary differential equations are given below. Find the general solution y 1(t)
and y2(t). Use ONLY the METHOD OF VARIATION OF PARAMETERS.
𝒚′𝟏 = 𝒚𝟏 − 𝟏𝟎𝒚𝟐 + 𝒕 (1)
𝒚′𝟐 = −𝒚𝟏 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏

17 2
Ans: 𝑦1 = 5𝑐1 𝑒 −𝑡 − 2𝑐2 𝑒 6𝑡 + 18 + 3 𝑡;
1 𝑡
𝑦2 = 𝑐1 𝑒 −𝑡 + 𝑐2 𝑒 6𝑡 + +
36 6

2. Solve the following ordinary differential equations using the METHOD OF LAPLACE TRANSFORMS.
(a) 𝒚′ − 𝒚 = 𝟐 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝟓𝒕 , 𝒚(𝟎) = 𝟏
(b) 𝒚" − 𝟒𝒚′ + 𝟒𝒚 = 𝒕𝟑 𝒆𝟐𝒕 , 𝒚(𝟎) = 𝟎, 𝒚′(𝟎) = 𝟎

1 5 14 1
Ans: 𝑎. 𝑦(𝑡) = − 13 cos 5𝑡 + 13 sin 5𝑡 + 13 𝑒 𝑡 ; 𝑏. 𝑦(𝑡) = 20 𝑡 5 𝑒 2𝑡

3. Consider the initial value problem

𝑥" + 𝑥′𝑡 2 + 3𝑥 = 𝑡, 𝑥(0) = 1, 𝑥 ′ (0) = 2
Convert this problem to a system of two first order equations and determine approximate values of the
solution at t=0.5 and t=1.0 using the 4th Order Runge-Kutta Method with h=0.1.

Ans: 1.543, 0.0707503; 1.14743, -1.3885

4. Derive the set of differential equations for the three mass-four spring system shown in Figure 1. That
describes their time motion. Write the system in matrix form,

𝑘
[𝐴𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑣𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟] + [ 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑥] [𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑣𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑥] = 0 (2)
𝑚

Solve for the eigenvalues and natural frequencies for the following values of mass and spring constants:
𝑘1 = 𝑘4 = 15𝑁/𝑚, 𝑘2 = 𝑘3 = 35 𝑁/𝑚, and 𝑚1 = 𝑚2 = 𝑚3 = 1.5 𝑘𝑔.

Figure 1

Ans: Eigenvalues: -73.655, -6.355, -33.333;

Natural Frequencies: 8.583, 2.517, 5.773
