Ma’am it’s more interesting to view the set
A images than set B.

SET B
Correct! Very good

Set A is more interesting to view

and give color to your imagination

What else?

Very good!

Later, I will ask you how this

images are related to our topic for
today

D. Discussion

We will discuss the figure of

speech.

Do you have idea what is figure of Ma’am figure of speech is a word or

speech? phrase that possesses a separate meaning
from literal definition

Very good!
It’s a phrase that have different
meaning

We use figure of speech to add

color and interest and to awaken
the imagination of the readers or
the listener.

What is the connection of the

images to our topic? Ma’am the connection to the images we’ve
saw earlier Set A is eye catcher like a
figure of speech.

Figure of speech is a literary device

that gives a technique to the
writers that uses to produce a
special effect in writing.
Understand? Yes

There are many types of figure of

speech, but today we will discuss
only the four commonly used figure
of speech. These are simile
metaphor, personification and
hyperbole

Which among of these four types of (student’s answer may vary)

figure are you familiar with?

Let start with simile

Anyone, do you have idea what is Ma’am it’s comparing to unlike things
simile? using like or as.

Yes very good!

Simile is a comparison between two
unlike things using the word “like”
or “as”

For example
She is as brave as a lion

The girl compared to a lion right?

What is the character or behavior
of lion? Brave ma’am (student’s answer vary)

So the girl compare to the behavior

of the lion

“She is as brave as a lion” is figure

of speech
In literal sentence “she is brave”
It simple
What have you notice? Ma’am using figure of speech it give us
imagination how the girl is, by comparing
to the lion, its brings out vivid imagery
Precisely!

Can you give example using “like” Ma’am Kherwin walks like a turtle
We know that turtle are walk
slowly so it’s compared the traits to
Kherwin. In literal sentence
Kherwin walk slowly.

Any question about simile? None

Let proceed to metaphor

What is metaphor? Ma’am metaphor is like a simile its
comparing things but without using like
or as

In metaphor its bring out the

symbolism
For example
Time is money
Time compare to money
We know time is important like
money. So there’s a symbolism.
The symbolism is time is precious.

Anyone can give example?

Ma’am ‘her mouth is cutter knife’
Her mouth compare in sharp object it
means her word hurtful.
Very good!
Always remember simile is
comparing two unlikely things
using like or as while metaphor is
comparing to unlikely things
without using like or as.

How about the personification?

What is personification? Ma’am from the word personification it
gives human qualities to non-living things
or idea.
Very good!
This is done to portray the object
alive and help the reader or listener
paint a vivid picture

For example
‘The wind danced as the storm
grew stronger.’
The object is wind and personified
it as living things by claiming it
danced. Only living things can
dance its applied to an object that
brings interest to the listener and
reader. Are we clear?

Anyone can give example and what Ma’am ‘Time ran away from him”
is being personified? Ma’am time, because only living things
can ran not literally ran.

Other example? The car died in the middle of the road.

Last, hyperbole this is my favorite

in figure of speech. I often use it,
all of the people knows.

Hyperbole uses exaggeration for

emphasis or effect and the
statement are never meant to be
taken literal meaning. Also create a
strong and lasting impression.

For example what I’ve say earlier

“I often use it, all of the people
know.” All of the people know do
you believe that? No
Not all people know me so how they
can know that I use it often.
For emphasis how I often use it
Other example?

Very good! Ma’am I’m tired cleaning a thousand of

You can up clean up a thousand dishes.
dishes. It also emphasis how tire
you are.

Other example
I love you, I can catch a star for
you

Have you understands the four

figure of speech? Yes ma’am
Do you have any question? If none None
I have a question for everyone. Let’s
play a game
