Department and for letting me discover things that are beyond my learnings in school.
To Mr. Kirby D. Eala and Ms. Krizzalyn O. Moren, my deepest appreciation for sharing
me your knowledge and experiences which motivates me to strive harder in life. You have
taught me how to become independent and be the best version of myself.
To Mr Gerardo L. Quijano, Mr. Jan Michael A. Hitosis, Mr. Arnel P. Mendoza, Mr.
Albert M. Rada, Mr. Marcelo D. Bautista, Mr. Noel C. Atienza and Ms. Mariella A. Roque,
thank you for training me very well in the real world of Chemical Engineering. You’ve
inculcated me with so much learning that I can use as I work someday. You’ve boosted my self
confidence and taught me how to become an effective Chemical Engineer in the future.
To the whole CAPDI family, thank you for your warm welcome and for this one of a
kind experience in having my on-the-job training which will be very useful for me as I go on
with my chosen career. And most especially, thank you for helping me broaden my knowledge
as I continue to strive my goals in life.
To my parents, Ronaldo D. Mamba and Jona D. Mamba, thank you very much for
always being at my back. Your unending love, care and support served as my inspiration to do
great in my training.
Above all, to Almighty God, I am more than blessed for Your guidance and

TRAINING OVERVIEW

On-the-job training is a way of changing student’s outlook in life through exposure in


the actual work that may serve as a stepping-stone towards the future life. It is a tool in
applying, enriching and enhancing the acquired knowledge in the school.
My 240 hours training which started last June 11, 2018 and ended last July 20, 2018
was a good preparation for me in the near future. My stay at the three departments and a section
of the plant namely the Boilers Water Treatment Plant, Refinery, Environmental Management
Section and Boiling House gave me so much learning not only in my chosen field but also in
other fields of work.
Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) is not only a good training ground in
enhancing my knowledge and skills in the field of Chemical Engineering but also a good place
to find the real meaning of what working with other people is. With my stay at CADPI, I
realized that working does not only mean having the knowledge, being good intellectually, or
being the head of the department but also knowing how to deal with the people around whatever
their positions are.
Under the supervision of Mr. Gerardo L. Quijano, Officer-In-Charge of the Boiling
House Department, Mr. Kirby D. Eala, Section Head of the Environmental Management
Section, Mr. Orlando G. Aala, Department Head of the Refinery, Mr. Fortunato B. Aliling,
Department Head of Boilers and together with different workers of CADPI, my understanding
about the sugar industry was broaden.
During my training, I learned the different processes involved in the operation as well
as the different equipment used. I also learned how to handle problems and know how to apply
my knowledge in order to come up with a solution. I also gained and developed skills which
are necessary in the work place someday.
CAPDI helped me to prepare myself in the real world of work and inculcated me with
so much learning that I can apply as I work in the future.

COMPANY PROFILE

Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. is a world-class producer of raw and refined sugar
located in Nasugbu, Batangas. It was incorporated in 1927.
Currently, its products are being sold to leading food and beverage manufacturers, other
industrial users and independent traders. CADPI prides itself for being an environment-friendly
sugar mill with comprehensive pollution abatement facilities

HISTORY

Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) was incorporated in 1927. Its history goes
back into the 1800s when the Roxas family bought the Nasugbu Estate and started planting
sizable portions of it with sugarcane. Favorable conditions in the industry prompted the
acquisition in 1927 of a larger and modern 1,200 tons cane per day raw sugar factory built by
Mirrlees Watson Co. Ltd. in Nasugbu. During its first year of operation, it produced 113,800
piculs of raw sugar.
Through the years, it underwent modernization and expansion that culminated in the
installation of a 5-mill tandem from Skoda (Czechoslovakia), new boilers and various
equipment in the process house.
In 1994, it became a fully integrated sugar manufacturer when it erected a 17,000 bags
per day refinery.
Its refined sugar and molasses are sold to leading food and beverage manufacturers,
such as Nestle Phil., San Miguel Corporation, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phil. and other industrial
users, as well as independent traders.

NARRRATIVE REPORT

WEEK 1 (June 11, 2018 – June 16, 2018)

June 11, 2018, the first day when I entered Central Azucarera Don Pedro Inc. (CADPI).
It was during this day that an orientation was conducted concerning the Company Profile,
History, OJT Guidelines and Policy, Integrated Management System, Security and Safety,
Company Rules and Regulations, Office Norms, and other OJT details.
After the orientation, Ms. Hazzle Anne M. Dela Vega from the Human Resources
Department gave me my schedule which was assigned first at the Boilers Water Treatment
Plant (WTP), followed by the Refinery Department, then to the Environmental Management
Section and finally to the Boiling House Department.
At the Boilers Department, I met my superiors and I had a short introduction about
myself. I also met my co-OJT students who are from the Technical University of the
Philippines Cavite who are taking up Power Plant Engineering Technology. They toured me
around the whole Boilers Department and showed me the different equipment used. After
which, one of my superiors gave me a red book to read which is about the Boilers Department.
During my stay at the Boilers Department, I, together with one of my Section Heads,
my co-OJT students and the workers at the Boilers Department entered in a furnace. During
that time, the workers were cleaning the furnace in preparation for the next plant operation. I
was also asked to read a presentation regarding the Boilers Water Treatment Plant and later
visited the said plant. As I visit the plant, I learned the different processes involved through the
help of the tenders.

WEEK 2 (June 18, 2018 - June 23, 2018)

The second week of my training was a continuation of my stay at the Boilers


Department. Again, I visited the water treatment plant to ask further the things involved in the
process which I am confused with. I also attended an earthquake drill which was conducted
last June 22, 2018. Lastly, Ms. Jeanky Lae M. Quiminniano, Section Head, told me to have a
report on what I’ve learned in the Boilers Department especially about the water treatment
plant.
It was also during this week that I was assigned at the Refinery Department under the
supervision of Mr. Orlando G. Aala. One of my Team Leads toured me around the whole
department while discussing the processes involved in the operation and what equipment are
being used.

WEEK 3 (June 25, 2018 – June 30, 2018)

I familiarized myself with the different unit operations involved in the process of the
Refinery Department. I roamed around the whole department and asked the different operators
on how the equipment works and how the process proceeds. Ms. Leonisa S. Paril, Section
Head, asked me to calibrate an equipment which was the Carbo UA tank by recording the time
needed for the solution to be consumed. I was also asked to sort a file regarding the causes of
remelting of sugar and recorded it in an excel file.
Ms. Mary Grace M. Delen, Team Lead, showed me the packaging area and discussed
to me the things that should be considered during the operation. At the end of my stay in the
refinery, I was asked to give a report about the processes involved in the department.

WEEK 4 (July 02, 2018 – July 07, 2018)

During this week, I am assigned at the Environmental Management Section under the
supervision of Mr. Kirby D. Eala. During my stay, I learned the processes involved in the Waste
Water Treatment Plant. As part of the department, I joined the emergency drill which was
conducted last July 06, 2018 inside the plant, I took pictures of the activity and I learned some
ways on how to respond whenever there is an emergency. I with the workers of the
Environmental Management Section, helped in the Linis Barangay which was held at Brgy.
Lumbangan last July 07, 2018. I also helped prepare the things to given by the Kiwanis
members to the students of different schools.

WEEK 5 (July 09, 2018 – July 14, 2018)

This week, I was assigned at the Boiling House Department. At first, they let me read
a book which is about the process in the boiling house. During this week, Mr. Vicente
Leovigildo C. Chavez, Team Lead, asked me to join their meeting regarding the elevation of
underground condenser water return line at spray pond and factory well at the small conference
room in the administration building together with the different constructors. Mr. Jan Michael
A. Hitosis, Team Lead, toured me around the whole department and discussed the different
processes involved as well as the different equipment used in the operation.
WEEK 6 (July 16, 2018 – July 20, 2018)
In pursuit of better understanding of CADPI processes, I roamed around the department
and asked the operators who were on duty to explain to me the mechanisms of the operation
and how the different equipment works. Ms. Mariella A. Roque, Team Lead, asked me to
present a report regarding the rotary vacuum filter or simply about filtration. They also gave

me an examination which covered the whole Boiling House Department, this is a way for them
to assess that I really learned the process in the department. During my last day, I presented my
report about filtration and had a short question and answer portion with my supervisors.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES ACQUIRED

On-the-job training is indeed a good training ground to be prepared in the near future.
It is not only confined in intellectual skills but also even in broader skills that are not learned
from schools.
During my on-the-job training, I learned that knowledge in not enough, it is also
important that as a worker someday, I know how to deal and to adapt with people around me.
The training assisted me in developing my professionalism and interpersonal skills necessary
for success in the workplace someday. It also enhanced my decision-making skill and my
critical thinking skill, it allowed me to analyze and evaluate a situation or an issue and form
judgement. Moreover, it helped me developed my self-reliance skill; I must believe in myself
that I can do something, that I can help someone and that I can be an asset to a company I am
with. My communication skill and self-confidence was also developed during my training, I
can now handle how to speak in front of people and can express my thoughts and opinions
regarding a certain issue. Lastly, I learned the word time management, I learned how to
maximize my time and prioritize things of greater importance.

IMPACT ON FIELD OF SPECIALIZATION

On-the-job training provides opportunities to go through the actual methodologies of a


specific job using the real tools, equipment and documents. In effect, the workplace becomes
a development venue for a student trainee to learn more about the chosen field and practice that
have been learned in the academy.
My training at Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) allowed me to apply my
knowledge in order to perform tasks effectively. It helped me to discover the real world of
Chemical Engineering and taught me how to become a good Chemical Engineer someday. The
training developed my critical thinking my allowing me to investigate for a problem and come
up with a possible solution to the problem. My training taught me to avoid problems as much
as possible and ensure the maximum efficiency of the plant, meaning there should be minimal
amount of waste. It also helped me to communicate effectively with the different workers of
the plant. Moreover, it widens my knowledge about the different unit operations involved in
the sugar industry.

SUMMARY

It was a great opportunity to be part and be trained in Central Azucarera Don Pedro Inc.
My 240 hours training which started last June 11, 2018 and ended last July 20, 2018 was a
good preparation for me in the near future. My stay at the three departments and a section of
the plant namely the Boilers Water Treatment Plant, Refinery, Environmental Management
Section and Boiling House gave me so much learning not only in my chosen field but also in
other fields of work. With the help of my supervisors and the workers of CAPDI, my
knowledge about the processes and equipment used in the operation was broaden. My training
also helped me developed and improved my skills that are not learned in the four corners of
the classroom. I was able to experience how to work with other people and how to handle
problems.
At the end of my training, I know and I believe that what I’ve learned in CAPDI is more
than that of what I’ve expected. My prepared training plan was successfully accomplished and
it prepared me not only in the field of Chemical Engineering but even in a wider horizon.
