MEASURES OF

1 CENTRAL TENDENCY

INTRODUCTION:
A single expression representing the whole group is selected which may convey a
fairly adequate idea about the whole group. This single expression in statistics is known
as the average. Averages are generally the central part of the distribution and therefore,
they are also called the Measure of Central Tendency or Averages.

FEATURES OF A GOOD AVERAGE:

(i) It should be rigidly defined so that different persons may not interpret it
differently.
(ii) It should be easy to understand and easy to calculate.
(iii) It should be based on all the observations of the data.
(iv) It should be easily subjected to further mathematical calculations.
(v) It should be least affected by the fluctuations of the sampling.
(vi) It should not be unduly affected by the extreme values.
(vii) It should be easy to interpret.
(viii) It should have sampling stability. It means that if the average is computed for
similar groups, the result should also be similar.

TYPES OF AVERAGES:

The following are the various types of common averages used in statistical
analysis given in the form of a chart.

RELATION B/W AM, GM AND HM:

1. For any set of positive observations, we have the following inequalities:

A.M > G.M > H.M.
The equality sign occurs when all the observation are equal.
2. Given two positive numbers a and b than GM2 = AM × HM.

Note: this result holds for only tow positive observations or if the observations are in
arithmetical progression.

MEDIAN:

Median is defined as the middle most or the central value of the variable in a set
of observations, when the observations are arranged either in ascending or in
descending order of their magnitude. It divides the arranged series in two equal parts.
Median is a position average, whereas the arithmetic mean is a calculated average.

MODE:

Mode is that value of the variable which occurs most frequently or the
point of maximum frequency. For a grouped frequency distribution, the mode is
computed by the following formulae.

f o − f -1
Mode = l + ×i
2f o − f − 1 − f +1

Where I = lower limit of the model class

f+1 = frequency of model class (or highest frequency)
f − 1 = frequency of the class preceding the model class
i = width of the model class
f+1 = frequency of the class following the model class

There is another formula for the mode :

∆1
Mode = 1 + ×i
∆1 + ∆ 2
where ∆1 = f o − f -1 and ∆ 2 = f o − f +1

QUESTIONS:
IMPORTANT THEORY QUESTIONS

CHOICE OF AN AVERAGE
There are various types of averages like Arithmetic Mean, Median, Mode, Geometric
Mean and Harmonic Mean. Each average has its own merits and demerits and
consequently its own field of importance and utility. Hence, the following points may be
kept in mind while deciding the use of a particular average for a specific purpose:
i) Arithmetic Mean is generally used in business applications like average profit,
average wages, average sales, average production etc. The arithmetic mean is not
SYNERGY INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT & COMMERCE

considered suitable frequency distributions having extreme observations or open

end classes.
ii) Median and mode are the averages to be used while dealing with extreme
observations
observations or open end classes.
In case of qualitative data which cannot be measured quantitatively e.g.
intelligence, honesty, hand-writing, bravery, beauty etc., median is the only
average to be used. Median is generally used to find the average wages of a
worker as it avoids the influence of a few very low or very high wage rates.
Mode is particularly used in business, when the businessman is not interested in
magnitude but only in the most common or fashionable value.
iii) Geometric Mean is used when the data are given as rates, ratios or percentages
instead of the actual quantities. It is commonly used in averaging rates of change
expressed as a percentage. For example, it is used to find average population
growth rater, average price rise, average depreciation etc. It is also theoretically
considered to be the best average in the construction of Index Numbers.
iv) Harmonic mean is used in problems in which values of a variable are compared
with a constant quantity of another variable. For example, to average speed
expressed in km/h, consumption of fuel in km/litre or litres/km etc.
Q.80 During one year, the ratio of milk prices per litre to bread prices per loaf was 3
whereas during the next year, the ratio was 2.
(a) Find the arithmetic mean of these ratios for the two year period.
(b) Find the arithmetic mean of the ratio of bread prices to milk prices for the two
year period.
(c) Discuss the advisability of using the arithmetic mean for averaging ratios.
(d) Discuss the suitability of the geometric mean for averaging ratios.
[DU B.A. Eco
Eco (H), 2001]
[Ans.: (i) 2.5, (ii) 0.417, (iii) Not advisable, (iv) Suitable]
Q.81 State giving reasons which average will be more appropriate in the following
cases:
(i) The distribution has open-end classes.
(ii) The distribution has wide range of variations.
(iii) When depreciation is charged by diminishing balance method and an average
rate of depreciation is to be calculated.
(iv) The distance covered is fixed but speeds are varying and an average speed is to
be calculated.
[DU B.Com. (P), 1999]
Ans.:
(i) Median or mode as they seldom lie in the first or the last classes.
(ii) Median as it is not affected by the values of extreme items.
(iii) Geometric mean since this is an average of rate measures.
(iv) Harmonic mean since it is used to average the ratios of the form x/y in which x is
fixed.

Q.82 It is said that "The choice of an average depends on the particular problem in
hand." Examine the statement and give at least one instance each for the use of mode,
geometric mean and harmonic mean. [DU B.Com. (H), 2007 (Regular)]
Or
Give two examples where Geometric and Harmonic mean would be the most suitable
averages.
Or
Explain the specific uses of harmonic mean. [DU B.Com. (P), 2000]
Ans.: The statement, "The choice of an average depends on the particular problem in
hand", is true.
Specific uses:
Mode:
1) Trade union leaders use mode as average as modal wage represents the wage
received by maximum number of workers.
2) The manufacturers of readymade garments are interested in mode which
represents the most common size in demand.
Geometric
Geometric Mean
1) The geometric mean is used to calculate growth of population, growth of an
economy etc.
2) The geometric mean is also used to calculate the average rate of interest against
changing rates of interest.
Harmonic Mean
1) The harmonic mean is used when we want to find the average price of an article if
different number of units of the article are purchased at different prices by
spending the same total amount every time.
2) If a person travels same distances at different speeds, then his average speed over
the whole journey is calculated using the harmonic Mean.
Mean

Q.83 A stockist of readymade garments should follow which type of average and
why? [DU B.Com. (P), 2001]
Ans.: A stockist of readymade garments should follow mode because mode is the
observation that occurs most frequently. The stockist should be interested to know the
modal size of his garments i.e. the size having maximum frequency of demand i.e. the
most common size. He should have a ready knowledge of it so that he may stock the
sufficient quantity of the garment.
Q.84 What is a statistical average? What are the desirable properties for an average
to possess? Mention different types of averages and state why the arithmetic mean is
the most commonly used amongst them. [DU B.Com. (Pass), 1997]
Ans.:
Ans.: A statistical average is a single figure around which the whole data concentrates.
This figure represents the whole series and generally lies in the middle of it. It
describes the characteristics of the entire mass of widely spread data.
The following are the desirable properties for an average to possess:
1. It should be simple to compute.
SYNERGY INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT & COMMERCE

2. It should be easy to understand.

3. It should be rigidly defined.
4. It should be representative of all the items.
5. It should not be unduly affected by extreme values.
6. It should be capable of further algebraic treatment.
The following are the different types of averages:
averages
(a) Mathematical Averages: These are the averages which normally take into
account all the values of a distribution. The following are some of the most
commonly used mathematical averages:
i) Arithmetic Average (or Mean)
ii) Geometric Mean
iii) Harmonic Mean
(b) Positional Averages: These are the averages which do not take into account all
the values of the distribution. The following are some of the most commonly
used positional averages:
i) Median
ii) Mode
The arithmetic mean is most commonly used among the above because of its following
characteristics:
1. It is easy to understand and calculate.
2. It can be understood by a lay man also.
3. It is determine by a rigid mathematical formula due to which everyone
computing it gets the same result.
4. It is least affected by sampling fluctuations.
5. It takes into account every item of the series.

Q.85 State two important objectives of the measures of central value.

[DU B.Com. (P), 1997]
Ans.: The following are two important objectives of central value:
1) The measures of central value give a single figure which describes and represents
the entire data.
2) They facilitate comparison between different series of data.

Q.86 When is mode said to be ill defined?[DU[DU B.Com. (P), 1997]

Ans.: When the mode is not rigidly defined, then it is known as ill defined.
For example, if a set of data are as follows:
Marks: 20 25 30 35 40 45
No. of students: 5 12 30 30 11 2
Here the mode is not rigidly defined i.e. it is ill defined because the number of students
getting 30 marks is same as the number of students getting 35 marks and both these
marks have the maximum frequency. In such cases, where the mode is ill defined, the
following empirical formula can be used to calculate the mode:
Mode = 3Md − 2X

Q.87 State giving reasons whether the following statement “In a bi-modal case, value
of mode can be calculated with the help of 2X − 2Md formula” is true or false.
[DU B.Com. (P), 2004]
Ans.: The empirical relationship between mean, median and mode is given by:
Mode = 3Md − 2X
Hence, the given statement is false.
Q.88 What is the difference between positional averages and mathematical
averages?
Ans.: The following are the various points of comparison between mathematical
average and the positional average:

Q.89 “Different averages serve different purposes, but simple mean is an ideal
average that can serve all purposes.” Comment.
Ans.: The statement is not correct. Simple Mean i.e. Arithmetic Mean cannot serve all
purposes. It fails in the following cases:
(i) Compound interest is calculated by Geometric Mean.
(ii) Theoretically, G.M. should be used in averaging index numbers.
(iii) For calculating average speed, when equal distances are covered at different
speeds, Harmonic Mean is used.
(iv) If different articles are purchased at different rates by spending equal amount on
each article, the average rate of purchase is given by Harmonic Mean of difference
rates.
(v) Modal wage is considered to be the best average by Trade Union Leaders/
Workers whereas mean is considered best by Factory Owners, for calculating
average wage of workers.
(vi) In case of open ended class intervals, mean cannot be calculated.
(vii) If the data is qualitative, median is the only average, which can be calculated.
(viii) Manufactures take the modal size as the average.

There are some other situations also where mean cannot be suitable but still mean has
wide variety of applications.
Q.90 Briefly explain the role of grouping and analysis table in the calculation of
mode.
[DU B.Com. (P), 1999]
Ans.: Mode is the value around which there is heaviest concentration of items. When to
or more frequencies are highest or highest frequency is very close to next highest
frequency, mode is found by grouping. Through grouping table, we find out the
concentration of items around a value.
After preparing the grouping table, we prepare the analysis table to find out the class in
which the mode lies.
Q.91 Compare and contrast arithmetic mean, geometric mean and harmonic mean.
Which of them is least affected by extreme items?

geometric mean and the harmonic mean:
