Title : The Government Policies for National Education System in Indonesia

Ladies and Gentlemen

Currently, the world of education in Indonesia is often the subject of various parties. Many
aspects are discussed when discussing the education system in Indonesia from the aspect of
the curriculum, academic aspect to the quality of the learners. To improve education in
Indonesia requires an education system that is responsive to changes and demands of the
times. Talking about Indonesia's education is always a debate. There are some people who
think that Indonesia's education system is good but in its application in the field has not run
well and even still far from a good word. Therefore, the improvement of the nation's quality
must be pursued through education.

In discussing Indonesian education as a whole, the education system in Indonesia is one of
the component that can not be separated. Indonesia now embraces the national education
system. However, the national education system still can not be implemented properly. There
are several systems in Indonesia that have been implemented, such as:

1. Value-oriented Indonesian Education System.

This education system has been implemented since elementary school. Here learners
are given the teachings of honesty, consideration, discipline, etc. This value is
conveyed through the Civic Education course. This value is also delivered at the
secondary and higher education levels.

2. Indonesia embraces an open education system.

According to this educational system, learners are required to compete with friends,
think creatively and innovatively.
3. An efficient education system in time management.
In the Teaching and Learning Actiities, time is set perfectly so that learners do not
feel burdened with the subject matter delivered because the time is too short or too
long.

4. Education system adapted to changing times.

In this system, the Indonesian nation must adapt the curriculum to its current state.
Therefore, curriculum in Indonesia often change from time to time, until now
Indonesia use curriculum 2013.

The problems that Indonesian nation face in the field of education include three points:
1. Indonesian nation is still has problem in Educational equity. This is because education
in Indonesia can only be felt by middle to upper class.
2. The declining Indonesian economy has an impact on education in Indonesia. There
are so many children who can not afford education because of the high cost of
education.
3. The quality of our education is still far behind when compared with other countries.
This is evidenced by the number of teaching staff who teach but not suitable with the
field. In addition, the level of honesty and discipline of students is still low. For
example: with the cheats made during the National Examination of students tend to
choose to get an answer instantly by buying key answers.

We can see that other countries have good educational system. For example Finnish Schools
have the first rank of the global education system because there is no system of appeal. All of
the students, regardless of ability, are taught in the same class. As a result, the gap between
the lowest and the highest class becomes the smallest in the world. They provide little
homework and have only mandatory test at 16 years old. Then Japan has no final exams of
the school so for students who have successfully completed primary school can apply to
junior high school and the high discipline and loyalty of the students make Japan has the best
education system in the world. And the last in New Zealand, children are encouraged to
upload their work in cyberspace from an early age, drawing with simple graphics programs,
then dictating their statements to teachers. The goal is to creating a generation of children
who are able to express themselves, and are responsible for their learning and not abused. So
why our country don’t do that?

Ladies and Gentlemen

Education is very important for a nation. Without education in Indonesia, our country will
have a lot of unemployment and our country will be easily swayed by other countries, then
the poverty rate in Indonesia will increase so that the nation will be left behind from other
nations. Then to overcome the three problems that I’ve told you before, the government
should makes policies by giving the funds for educators to continue the higher education
levels and providing various training for them; holding a 12-year compulsory education
policy without levies by freeing the tuition fee or creating a free-school policy so the students
do not feel burdened with the expensive cost for education; and improving facilities and
infrastructure, such as repairing building facilities, replicating books, etc.

With the policies, it is expected that all education can be felt in all circles of Indonesian
society. And Indonesia can be better so that the Indonesian people can balance other
countries.
