Original Paragraph

The SCT is based on the tenet that human mental abilities including linguistic abilities,
such as writing, are mediated through symbolic artefacts, the most important of which is language
(Vygotsky, 1978). In this approach forms of mediation are explicitly and/or implicitly introduced
by a more capable person (e.g. a teacher) as a less capable person (e.g. a student) encounters
difficulties completing a task. Mediation in this theory is conceptualised as a process which
individuals employ to regulate others’ and/or their own social and mental abilities by using
“culturally constructed artefacts, concepts and activities” (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006, p. 79).

Paraphrase

The principle that human mental competence including linguistic competence such as
writing are underlying the SCT, they are mediated by way of symbolic artifacts, the most
significant being is language (Vygotsky, 1978). As a less competent person for example a learner
find hardship finishing an assignment, in this approach designs of mediation are directly and/or
indirectly presented by more competent person for example an educator. A process that individuals
used to arrange other people and/or their own social and mental competence by applying
“culturally built artefacts, concepts and activities” is the conceptualisation of mediation in this
hypothesis (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006, p. 79).

Paraphrase + Example

The principle that human mental competence including linguistic competence such as
writing are underlying the SCT, they are mediated by way of symbolic artifacts, the most
significant being is language (Vygotsky, 1978). Shooshtari & Mir (2014) state that SCT views
learning not as an 'individual effort', students can develop through participation in activities that
require social interaction and communicative functions. As a less competent person for example a
learner find hardship finishing an assignment, in this approach designs of mediation are directly
and/or indirectly presented by more competent person for example an educator. A process that
individuals used to arrange other people and/or their own social and mental competence by
applying “culturally built artefacts, concepts and activities” is the conceptualisation of mediation
in this hypothesis (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006, p. 79).
