ROOF RUNOFF PLANNING FORM

These sheets should be used onsite while planning the practice.

Landuser: County:

Planner:

Look at the building eaves.

Can gutters be attached easily?
Will new fascia board be required?
How wide is the fascia board? in.

Consider possible downspout locations

If needed, can a tile outlet be installed easily?
(No concrete to break.)
What do downspouts outlet into?

Will ice damage be a factor for gutter lifespan?

(Are long slopes present?)

Can /should a rock trench be used?

(Will livestock have access to site?)

Notes: 1. "Roof" can be an entire side of a building or a section of the
building roof that will flow to a certain gutter.
2. Width is from Peak to Gutter.
Draw a diagram of the site with dimensions. Include buildings roof pitches, proposed
gutters, possible downspout locations, outlet tile locations, etc.

Step 1: Compute Capacity of Selected Gutter Size

qg=0.16407 * Ag * r 0.67 * s 0.5 (recommend s = 1/16 or less; 5 or 6 inch K style aluminum gutter)
Select a gutter style and size along with desired slope. May have to adjust later.

Step 3: Determine if Gutter or Downspout Controls
Nd=qg/qd (If Nd<1, gutter capacity controls)
This step computes the number of downspouts needed to control the capacity of a section of the gutter. Nd does not represent the
number of downspouts needed for the given section of roof.

Step 4: Determine Roof Area Gutter or Downspout can Serve

Ar = q*3,600/P where P = 0.6" (25 yr. 5 min. storm)
Adjust gutter and/or downspout sizes until a workable design is found.

Step 5: If Used, Check Underground Outlet Capacity
q = P/3600 * Ar (Use min. pipe slope.)
Enter roof area to be discharged into the underground outlet. Adjust pipe size, material and slope as needed to find needed size.
Note what each outlet is controlling in the space provided.

Notes:
1. Roof Section of building to be guttered.
2. Slope measured in specified inches of fall over one foot of gutter length.
3. Gutters shall be installed below the projection of the roof line to reduce damage from
ice and snow.
4. Maximum support spacing for gutters is 24 inches.
5. Downspouts shall be securely fastened at the top and bottom with intermediate
supports that are a maximum of 5 feet apart.
6. Gutters, downspouts and associated hardware shall be of similar material.
7. Align downspouts with exising post locations on building.

Materials:
Roof gutters and downspouts may be made of aluminum, galvanized steel, or plastic.
Aluminum gutters and downspouts shall have a nominal thickness of at least 0.027 and
0.020 inches, respectively. Galvanized steel gutters and downspouts shall be at least 28
gauge. Plastics shall contain ultraviolet stabilizers. Dissimilar metals shall not be in
contact with each other.

Operation & Maintenance:

A maintenance program shall be established by the landowner/user to maintain the
funtional capacity of the gutter system. Items to consider include but are not limited to:
1. Keep gutters and downspouts clean and free of obstructions that reduce flow.
2. Repair all broken or displaced gutters, downspouts and supports to insure proper
functioning.
3. Periodically inspect all components of the gutter system.
4. Repair all damaged outlets for the gutter system.

same size, 3/8" to 3/4") and shall be free of appreciable amounts of sand and/or soil particles.
Crushed limestone shall not be used for backfill unless it has been washed.
**Septic stone is an acceptable alternative.
3. Drainage Tubing shall be a minimum of 4 inch diameter corrugated plastic tubing. It shall be
installed the through the entire length of the rock trench according to the drawing above and shall
extend to an acceptable outlet as shown on the plan map.
Operation & Maintenance:
A maintenance program shall be established by the landowner/user to maintain the funtional
capacity of the rock trench system. Items to consider include but are not limited to:
