You have been hired as a team leader in the Marketing Department in an organization which is Telenor’s
competitor in Telecom industry in Pakistan. The First Line Manager requires you to submit a report in
which you have to analyse the Management skills and Leadership styles applied by managers at Telenor
which gives them an edge as a distinctive employer in the Telecom industry in Pakistan. You must choose
a major competitor on the basis of your research; also justify the choice of your chosen organization.

• Write an essay to analyse and differentiate between the role of a leader and functions of a
manager. Critically evaluate the leadership traits and skills that are applied by the managers in
Telenor. Give suitable recommendations that can be useful for your organization in order to uplift
its image as an employer.

• Different management styles are suited to different situations. Analyse the application of
Transformational and Transactional Leadership Styles. Critically evaluate the implementation and
application of these leadership styles by Telenor and your own organization.

• Explain the value and importance of the theories of Operations Management


(Situational, System & Contingency) in achieving business objectives. Which theory of
management do you think is most effective? Critically analyse the application of these theories by
Telenor and its outcomes on the wider business environment.

• Discuss the importance of management functions: Planning, Organising, Controlling and


Directing. Critically evaluate the application of these functions by Telenor and the organization
where you work.

• Analyse the relationship of Telenor with its stakeholders in the context of developing and
sustaining entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship.

• Conduct interviews with 5 managers from different corporate organizations; select managers from
both profit and non profit organizations from different sectors- banking, healthcare, industrial, telecom
etc. Frame questions in order to carry out a qualitative analysis that would effectively help you in
evaluating their responses about the following management skills:

i. Effectiveness and Application of Total Quality Management, Just in time inventory and

Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) ii. Importance of Action-Centred Leadership iii.

Application of Hard and Soft Management Skills iv. Chaos Theory and Management by

Objectives

v. Challenges in management due to Globalization and Turbulent Forces.

vi. Relationship of leadership and management in the context of Corporate Social


Responsibility: culture, values, ethics and sustainability.

vii. Variables that effect logistic and inventory management?

• Choose one manager who you think is both an effective leader and a successful manager. Justify your
choice with evidence from an incident narrated by the manager in which he handled a difficult
situation and simultaneously provided support to his employees as well.

• Based on your analysis of the interviews, comment on the importance of adaptability and flexibility of
leadership styles in different situations.
