Sub: Elective Courses during Semesters III & IV

1. As stated in the Student Handbook (Section 2.5 on Elective Courses – p. 12), students are
required to pursue eight elective courses (exactly four each during Semesters III and IV), in
addition to specified core courses.
2. The courses proposed to be offered during Semesters III and IV during the Academic Year
2019-20 at IBS-Bangalore are given in Annexures I and II respectively. All electives carry three
credits each.
3. In each Annexure, the electives offered are presented in ten groups numbered A to J. All
elective courses in a group will have examinations conducted at the same time. Therefore,
students can opt for only one elective from each group, so that there is no conflict with the
examination calendar.
4. The courses belong to different academic domains such as Marketing, Finance & Banking,
Human Resources, IT & Analytics and Operations.
5. A student can consider to have specialized in a given domain if he/she has studied at least
four electives in that domain.
6. For dual specialization, one would have to study four electives each from two selected
domains. Alternatively, one can take four or more electives in one domain (leading to single
domain specialization), and choose the remaining electives from other domains.
7. Some electives are offered during both Semester III and IV to accommodate larger number of
students and also offer greater flexibility. However, a student can opt for any given elective
only once, and not in both the semesters.
8. Please take a decision about your choice of electives and be ready. You will be asked to fill in
a signed form and/or upload your choice of electives shortly.
9. If the number of students opting for an elective is less than 15, it will be dropped. Students
who had opted for such electives will be asked to choose from among the other electives.
The final list of electives and the students who have opted for each elective will be drawn up
after this process.
10. However, at the beginning of each semester (i.e., at the beginning of Semesters III and IV),
students can exercise the liberty of changing a maximum of two of the four electives opted
for earlier by them, subject to there being no conflict with the examination calendar or class
time table. This facility can be exercised only within the first two weeks of commencement of
the semester, and only once. Repeated changes will not be permitted.
11. Even when a student changes electives, the text books/study materials will be issued based
only on the earlier choice of electives, and not based on the revised choice.
12. If the need arises, ACC may apply prerequisites for certain elective courses.
