This document provides guidelines for reinforcing nozzles on pressure vessels based on ASME Code Section VIII requirements. Some key points:
1. No reinforcement is needed for nozzles under 3 inches and vessel walls under 3/8 inches thick. Normal reinforcement applies to larger nozzles and walls.
2. Reinforcing pads should closely match the vessel contour and material strength. They can be inside or outside. Pads require tapped tell-tale holes for testing.
3. Elliptical openings over twice as long as wide need increased short-dimension reinforcement to prevent twisting. Openings in flat heads and flanges have specific reinforcement rules.
