LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS
1. Explain the principle of operation of transformer. Derive its EMF equation.
2. Explain how to conduct OC & SC test on single phase transformer. And also explain how to
obtain transformer equivalent circuit, efficiency and voltage regulation from the OC & SC
test data.
3. Draw and explain the phasor diagram of practical transformer when it is operating under
different load conditions.
4. Explain the operation of autotransformer. How saving of copper is achieved in an
autotransformer over conventional two winding transformer (Derivation of copper saving).
What are advantages and disadvantes of autotransformer over conventional two winding
transformers?

5. A 25 KVA transformer has 500 turns and 50 secondary turns. The primary is connected to a
3000V, 50Hz supply. Find full load primary current, secondary current, secondary EMF and
maximum flux.

6) A 20KVA, 3300/220 V, 50Hz single phase transformer has iron loss of 250 watts and copper
loss at full load of 410 watts. Find the efficiency of transformer at
i) Full load 0.8 p.f lagging
ii) Half load at u.p.f

7) A 500 KVA, 3800/400V, 50Hz single phase transformer has the following data:
𝑅1 = 0.114 𝑂ℎ𝑚
𝑋1 = 0.459 𝑂ℎ𝑚
𝑅2 = 0.00102 𝑂ℎ𝑚
𝑋2 = 0.00416 𝑂ℎ𝑚
Find the percentage voltage regulation of the transformer when supplying full load current at
a p.f of 0.8 lagging.
