Rengasdengklok Event

Rengasdengklok event occurred before Indonesia declare the independence. Rengasdengklok


event caused by a difference opinion between the youth group and the parent group, they dealt with
the time to declare the proclamation of independence of Indonesia. According to the parent group to
declare the proclamation, Indonesia state should wait the time given by Japanese government, because
the Japanese has given a promise of independence. Meanwhile according to the opinion of the youth
group, the proclamation should be implemented as soon as possible by exploiting a power vacuum.

The old group represented by Ahmad Subardjo, while the youth group represented by Wikana.
The result of the difference opinion, the youth group were kidnapping against the old group namely
Soekarno and Hatta, they were both exiled in Rengasdengklok. Rengasdengklok chosen because it was
far away from the capital and they can easily keep an eye on the Japanese soldiers who wanted to come
to Rengasdengklok, Karawang, West Java. The house in Rengasdengklok belonged by Jo Ki Song.

On August 16th 1945 in dormitory Baperpi Cikini number 74 Jakarta Street, the youth group held
a meeting attended by Sukarni, Josep Kunto, Muwardi, Sudancho Singgih, and paidan PETA Jakarta. This
meeting made a decision to alienate Soekarno and Hatta to keep them away from any influence of
Japan. Because the support of PETA Soldiers from Latif Hendraningrat so right on the August 16th 1945
at 4:30 p.m. , Ir.Soekarno, Mohammad Hatta and a group of youth group arrived in Rengasdengklok.

In Rengasdengklok Soekarno and Hatta were willing to declare the independence after their
return to Jakarta. From the talks of Achmad Subardjo and Wikana they agreed that the proclamation of
Indonesian independence will be held on August 17th 1945. With that assurance, the commander
Cudanco Map Subeno were willing to release Soekarno, Hatta and his entourage to return to Jakarta.
The delegation arrived in Jakarta at 17.30 WIB.

The Proclamation text of Indonesia Independence formulated by Sukarno, Moh. Hatta and
Ahmad Soebardjo at the house of Admiral Tadashi Maeda in the early of August 17 th, 1945. The time
that the proclamation text formulated, Soekarno conceptualized the text and refined by Hatta and
Ahmad Soebardjo. Once the draft is completed and approved, Sayuti Melik typed the manuscript using a
typewriter taken from office Mayor Dr. AL German belongs, Hermann Kandeler.

Jakarta, the resident of Soekarno. On Friday, August 17th 1945 Indonesia declared the Independence and
the proclamation text read by and connected with a short speech without text. The flag sewn by Ms.
Fatmawati, and raised with Latif Hendraningrat assisted by Soehoed. While the flag was fluttering, the
audience sang Indonesia Raya together.
