SUBJECT: Correct Installation of Air Filter Element

MODELS AFFECTED: All Fortis Products

DESCRIPTION:
This Parts-Service Gram replaces Gram AI00005R1 to provide additional information. Please
discard pervious electronic and paper copies of that Gram.

Hyster Company has observed that there is the possibility of an incorrect installation of the air filter
element during replacement. The filter element on the Fortis series has an improved locking
mechanism over the previous XM product. Where the previous product had a “push on” type filter
element, the new Fortis series has a “push and turn” filter element. This provides a more positive seal
against contamination. Below are instructions which must be followed to ensure the filter element is
correctly installed:

• Check the liner to insure that it is square to the hole and the O-ring is fully seated. See figure
3. Note: You may add a very light amount of lube or oil to ease the installation of the liner.
• Using only genuine Hyster approved parts, place the filter element into the canister.
• Press and rotate the filter element clockwise1/8 turn until fully engaged in the canister and
locked in place. The filter element must be fully engaged to provide optimum sealing.
• Install the cover. If the filter element is not fully engaged, the canister cover will not fit correctly.
See figure 1. Also refer to Parts-Service Gram AI00007 for a more complete description of the
need to correctly seal the cap.
• Do not force the cover onto the canister. Doing so will result in damage to the filter element,
cover, and possibly the canister.
• If the cover does not fit flush with the canister, remove the cover and re-check that the element
is fully seated and that there are no other obstructions or damage. Re-install the filter element
rotating it clockwise 1/8 turn and re-install the cover.

NOTE: If the filter element is properly installed the cover will fit easily into the canister. See figure 2.
If the cover does not fit easily, the filter element is not installed properly.

Refer also to the Periodic Maintenance Manuals for your particular model in HYPASS Online for
detailed procedures on replacing the element and recommended maintenance intervals. Please
also note that truck operation in dirty and dusty applications may require more frequent
maintenance intervals.

The air filter housing should NOT be opened periodically to check the element. The only time
the air filter housing should be opened is to replace the element. There are two ways to
determine if an element needs replacing:
1). The Air Filter Restriction indicator light has illuminated (with the premium monitoring option)
or the manual indicator (if so equipped) has tripped or
2). The selected number of hours has passed since the last element change.

It is recommended that when specifying a truck for dusty applications, the premium monitoring
option should be considered, particularly for diesel engine trucks. This option includes an air
restriction indicator, which illuminates a light on the dash display in the event of excess restriction
in the air intake system. This is also available as an aftermarket option through HYPASS Online
for trucks already in service. NOTE! For trucks equipped with the premium monitoring system, the
filter housing should not be opened until the monitoring system identifies that servicing is
required. There is a CIL (Check Indicator Light) responsibility for the driver for every shift.

For trucks equipped with a diesel engine in dirty/dusty applications, if the truck is not equipped
with the premium monitoring option, the air filter housing should not be opened unless the
required number of hours has passed and the truck has reached the recommended time for a
filter change. We suggest that to protect any truck not equipped with the premium monitoring
option, you offer the customer a Secondary Filter Element and Manual Restriction Indicator Kit
for the truck. They are part numbers 1670585 for models F001 and L177 with the Yanmar
engines and 1680586 for models N005, D024 and H006 with the Cummins engines. This will
provide the service technician/customer’s service personnel with a visible indicator of when to

change the filter if it has not yet reached the recommend change interval. When this is added,
the filter housing should not be opened until the restriction indicator advises servicing is
required.

It is highly recommended by Hyster Company that a copy of this Parts-Service Gram be provided to
any customer doing their own maintenance so there will be no problems in the future regarding failed
engines due to contamination.

We have also included a copy of Donaldson’s maintenance page for your convenience.
