Clothing Line For Amputees

By: Elianna Leigh, Asher Straub, and

Victoria Leigh
Why?
We have created a line of clothing for amputees (people with
prosthetics). The reason we created this line is because clothing
like pants and shirts are not very easy for people with
prosthetics to manage in their day to day life, when they have to
take off their prosthetic and they can't just roll up their sleeves
or pant legs because it is very difficult to do with normal denim
jeans or a cotton shirt. “I actually have to put my jeans on my
legs first, then put my legs on, then pull my pants up." says
24-year-old Mandy Horvath. The purpose of this clothing line is to
make it easier and more accessible to take off or put on the
prosthetic.
Brief description of what we created
We created a multitude of different ideas for our clothing line, for starters we put velcro
on the sleeves for easier access to put the sleeve over the prosthetic. We also added
magnets to a design so if you have poor hand coordination due to the prosthetics, it’s
easier to put on and take off the sleeve. We also designed a built in padding to disguise
the prosthetic so it would appear to be a full arm. We designed many different ideas
that all used different material blends so they could serve the purpose of stretching and
forming the suitable fit for the prosthetics. We used blends of cotton, fleece, and
spandex.
What We Created
Now to what we created! Our first product is a pair of spandex leggings that can be for
men and women. The idea behind this is to wear it by itself or underneath clothing. These
aren’t just regular leggings because on the leg there are pads on the sides on the legs in
order to make pants fit better and more comfortable on the prosthetic. It also helps to
keep the prosthetic in place and help with movement of the prosthetic. Second we made a
pair of denim pants that unzip on the side of the leg and it goes up to the thigh for easy
access to the prosthetic. Next, we did another pair of denim pants that has velcro on either
side of the leg to make it easy to access and take off and put on the prosthetic. The
velcro on this pair of jeans goes up to mid thigh and it is made to make the velcro
unrecognizable. Then, we made a shirt with velcro on the sleeve to make it easy to access
the prosthetic. As well as that we made a shirt with padding on the arm to make clothing fit
more comfortably around the prosthetic. Lastly, we made a shirt with magnets around the
top near the shoulder to make the prosthetic accessible.
More of what we created
Three designs we thought of for people with leg prosthetics was to have the jeans be made
out of denim but also have a zipper on the leg so it’s easier to put the prosthetic into the leg
hole. Our second design had velcro on the side, it's has the same concept as our first design
but for this one the person whos wearing the clothing can put the velcro how ever lose or tight
as they please. Our last design has padding around the whole prosthetic to give it more of a
full look also to make it more comfortable on the person.
The process to creating our fashion
line started slow but once we were
Our process
able to contextualize our ideas and
put them on paper it was much
easier. At first we had to think what
would be the be best to help people
through struggles of having
prosthetics, we soon realized the
clothing had to be changed. At first
we were thinking about having a
zipper around the triceps than can
be used to remove or put back on
the sleeve but we realized the
coordination to put the zipper back
on would be a strain that some
wouldn’t be able to deal with, so we
then created a line with velcro and
magnets to easily pull on the
material and put it back into place.
Makeup and Hair
For our fashion show our female models will be wearing a very natural nude look with
light foundation and a little bit of bronzer, light pinkish peach blush and dusty rose
lipstick. For our female models will also have their hair slicked back into a low
“military bun”. Our male models will be wearing their hair with it being long on top
and short on the sides.

you by inspiring you to get up on top of it all.

3.Stronger -Kelly Clarkson

directly relates to what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and that you can overcome anything. Jjust
because you lost a limb you don’t have to give up adapt and overcome the challenges.

4.Not Afraid -Eminem

I chose this song to show that you shouldn’t be afraid to be who you are. You should be proud of
yourself and keep your head high, nothing can bring you down. Don’t be afraid just because things are
harder because of prosthetics just overcome those challenges and do everything to the best of your ability.
