Water Desalination by Reverse Osmosis
The use of brackish and seawater sources is the natural choice for areas lacking adequate
freshwater supplies. Desalination of these waters can only be achieved by one of a few
processes, some preferred for brackish water while others for seawater. One of the
factors that make reverse osmosis very popular is its economy of use for both brackish
and seawater applications.
The desalination technology with the greatest number of plants installed in the world is
reverse osmosis. Metito is one of the pioneers in this system. According to an official
publication of the International Desalination Association, Metito ranks amongst the
first in the world for the number of reverse osmosis plants installed. Typical Metito RO

Municipal Water Supply
Metito undertakes major brackish and seawater desalination contracts either on mechanical
& electrical supply and supervision basis or on turnkey basis. Whether from a brackish
water source or from a seawater source, Metito engineers can assume total responsibility
for design and construction of a desalination plant covering: intake from sea or brackish
water source; pre-treatment; RO desalination racks; post-treatment; instrumentation and
PLC control; MCC, storage and pressurization for distribution.
Beach Resorts and Hotels
Metito produces a range of standard brackish and seawater desalination plants that are
quite popular with permanent camp sites, oil drilling sites, beach resorts and hotels.

Water Desalination by Reverse Osmosis

Metito manufactures standard and custom-built RO desalination plants built within
purpose-designed container housing(s). These plants are completely factory installed and
wired for immediate hook-up to water and power source (containerized power generator
is optional). Exterior design and dimensions of the housings are made to fit standard
trailers and highway codes.
Metito has mastered the production of smaller desalination plants that fit into tight spaces.
Specially designed packages are manufactured with harsh open-air sea environment in
mind. These packages combine pre-treatment, desalination and post-treatment and are
typically suitable for offshore, oil drilling platforms where space is scarce and trouble free
operation cannot be compromised.

Surface Water Treatment
Nearly 200 million people in Africa are facing
serious water shortages. By 2025,
nearly 230 million Africans will face water
scarcity, and 460 million will be living in
water-stressed countries.
Some countries are blessed with abundant natural water sources be it lakes, rivers or
dams. These are termed as surface waters. Unfortunately, surface waters are open to
contamination from human and animal waste in addition to other natural pollutants.
Consequently, they are particularly susceptible to contamination by organisms such
as bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause serious illness; or simply by mud
during flood seasons. Metito offers several systems to treat each individual surface

Sewage Treatment
Sewage is a word normally associated with municipal or human-generated wastewater.
Metito sewage treatment plants cater for a wide spectrum of applications requiring
aerobic, anaerobic or anoxic treatment processes. Within the past few years, the subject
of advanced sewage treatment has become greatly expanded, especially with respect to
removal of nitrogen and phosphorous.
Municipal Sewage Treatment Plants
Metito has implemented dozens of municipal scale sewage treatments. These plants are

Metito’s range of package treatment plants are either rectangular factory-built sectional-
steel units or circular site-assembled glass-lined steel tanks. Aerobic treatment through
extended aeration or contact stabilization use blower-diffuser aeration, mechanical
surface aerators or rotating biological contactors. This range of Metito plants is built to
cater for smaller communities not connected to a central municipal sewage treatment
plant, temporary construction facilities, hotels and resorts, commercial ships, hospitals
and schools.

Water Disinfection
Decades of water disinfection experience and thousands of gas chlorinations and hypo-
chlorinators, ozone generators and UV radiators installed, established Metito as a leader
in this field. Metito supplies disinfection equipment and plants for drinking water, sewage
and industrial wastewater treatment, among others. The scope of Metito’s work covers
both supply of standard equipment and the design and supply of customized systems
through to the commissioning stage. The scope of disinfection processes and equipment
supplied include:
Water-borne diseases are responsible for 80
percent of illnesses and deaths in the

Chlorination
Gas Chlorine: Vacuum-type gas chlorinators, chlorine analyzers, cylinders and drums,

Plc Control, Scada and Telemetry Systems
Almost in all types of multi-function and multi-component water, sewage and wastewater
treatment systems, monitoring and control capability is a must. Progress and improved
reliability of analytical and other process- control instruments have encouraged engineers
to depend on automation to the maximum degree possible, which in turn favors the use
of PLC/SCADA based control systems.
Design of a suitable PLC control and SCADA system for interface to water/wastewater
and desalination systems requires perfect understanding of the process and available
control hardware. User friendly is a good description of a control system that works in
harmony with the human element to detect plant anomalies and takes early measures for
uninterrupted operation. Depending on the specifics of an application, a Metito control
system, in addition to sensing instrumentation, may consist of the following components:
Interactive Graphics Operator Station, CPU/power supply, I/O hardware and office
environment hardware for holding of the computer, monitor, printers and accessory
equipment.
The Interactive Graphics Operator Station (IGOS) software can clearly display in color on
the monitor all parts of the process. An operator using the keyboard can interact with
the monitor and the treatment plant processes to the maximum level allowed by the pre-
programmed software.
Telemetry, another specialty of a Metito control engineer is essential for communicating
instrument outputs with main and sub-control stations. Telemetry is especially
important in larger Metito plants having integral but remote components. Fiberoptic or
split-wire communication cables are used depending on location and distance of the
different components.
