creants  were  killed  during  a
search operation carried out in
the  Kaboo  area  of  Mastung
district on  Thursday.
Four  security personnel

pointed  Director  General  of
National Accountability  Bu­
reau Balochistan, Farmanullah
has  assumed  charge  here  on
Thursday.
Soon after he took over the
charge  of  NAB  Balochistan
office, he revived  the perfor­
mance  of the  bureau.  “NAB
believes  in  across  the  board
accountability,” he said while
addressing  the  officers  and
urged the officers to maintain
integrity,  and proceed  with
cases  as  per  law,  said  press

National medicines policy to

be announced soon: Dr Zafar
ISLAMABAD  (APP): Min­
ister  of  State  for  National
Health  Services,  Regulations
and Coordination Dr  Zafar
Mirza  on  Thursday  said  that
the government has decided to
present a new national medi­
cines  policy  to regulate  the
pharmaceutical  industry  and
controlling the drugs prices.
Addressing a press con­
ference here, the minister said
that  the  new  policy  is  being
made in consultation with all
stakeholders  to ensure avail­
ability of life saving drugs and
keeping prices of all drugs in
reach of a lay man.
He said that  the n ew
medicin es  policy will  also
cover the aspect of rules and
regulations  to  streamline  the
production of medicines and
maintaining its quality as per
international standard.
Dr Mirza said that under
this  policy,  the  government
will  also  get  inputs  from  the
stakeholders  for announcing
more  incentives  for  pharma
industry in order to convince
th ose  pro du cing standard
medicines in the market.
He said that  the new
policy  will  also  manage  the
issues related with the sale of
medicines  without  prescrip­
tion of  medical  practitioners
and open sale of unauthorized
medicines to customers.
He said that the govern­
ment has decided to make Drug
Regulatory Authority  of  Pa­
kistan (DRAP) a model regu­
latory  authority with intro­
duction of new reforms in or­
der to facilitate the people and
addressing the issues of qual­
ity and pricing of drugs.
The minister said that quick
response of government to nor­
malize the prices  of  medicines
will have relief impact of Rs 10
billion on patients. The govern­
ment has decided to utilize this
amount  on further serving the
ailing population, he added.
He said that the govern­
ment  will  ensure  availability
of essential medicines and life
saving drugs in the market on
normal rates. He added around
50  to  60  such  medicines  are
still unavailable in the market
and the pharma industry has
been  asked  to  manage  these
medicines for patients.
He said that meetings will
be  held with representatives
of pharma industry in Lahore
and Karachi to get assurance
from them regarding produc­
tion  of these  unavailable  life
saving drugs in the markets.
He said that the ministry
has got approval from the fed­
eral cabinet on its initiatives to
address the issue of recent in­
crease  in  prices  of medicines
on the directives of Prime Min­
ister  Imran  Khan  in  order to
give relief to people. He added
the cabinet has approved that
the prices of those 464 medi­
cines which increased over 75
percent will be reversed to ac­
tual increase of 75 percent. He
added there were concerns in
public about increase in prices
of 464 medicines  and  overall

Medicines expensive or atom bombs?
National Drug Policy
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Na-
tional Health Services Dr. Zafar Mirza has
said that National Medicine Policy is being in-
troduced to regulate the prices of drugs on long-
term basis. Addressing a news conference in
Islamabad yesterday, he said the govern-
ment is working on this policy in consulta-
tion with stockholders of pharmaceutical in-
dustry. The Special Assistant said the drugs
prices were increased due to ineffective poli-
cies of previous governments and the PTI
led government is taking bold measures to
control this menace. He said the Prime Min-
ister had announced to take strict actions
regarding high prices of 889 medicines in
which prices of 395 medicines have been
reduced and the direction of the Prime Min-
ister will be implemented very soon. He said
that over 300 percent increase made in the
prices of medicines is being brought down
to 75 percent in consultation with pharma-
ceutical industry.
He said the government will save 8 bil-
lion rupees after reduction in prices of 395
medicines and this amount will be returned
to the consumers by spending it on poor and
deserving patients through Fatal Disease
Fund of Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal. He said 9
percent increase in prices is also being with-
drawn which was further risen after fixing
the prices on 15 percent increase. He said
another two billion rupees will saved after
this withdrawal and limitation up to 75 per-
cent increase in prices. The Special Assis-
tant said the government is also working to
support the industry to increase its export
ensuring availability of essential and lifesav-
ing medicines in the market. He said avail-
ability of essential and lifesaving medicines
will be ensured in the country at all cost. Dr

Previously, Dr. Zafar Mirza had said that
the prices of some medicines were allowed to
increase so that medicines may not disappear
from the market, because prices of few medi-
cines were not increased since 2002. Earlier,
while addressing a press conference in
Islamabad on May 3, the Minister of State for
Health, Dr. Zafar Mirza revealed that some
464 drugs recently increased from 500 to 700
percent. He said that On December 31, 2018,
prices of 839 medicines were fixed by SRO,
but one more SRO was released on January
10, which allowed an increase of 9 percent
more. According to him 9 to 75 percent of
prices of medicines are to be brought back.
The decision has been taken, this initiative
will benefit the people of Rs 7 billion annually
and the money received from this act  will be
transferred to Pakistan Bait-ul-Mall.
At present, the increasing poverty, low av-
erage income and the standard of living of
the common man, in our country has caused
the people to be suffered mentally. Common
man is so much busy in the everyday affairs
that he has almost lost ability to understand
things. He cannot even notices of events hap-
pening in his surrounding or he does not
understand the frauds, atrocities and cruel-
ties committed to him.
Else, if a person or a group of civil society
raises a voice on such abuses, frauds or
atrocities, then he finds out that he has been
abused or deceived. So it is the responsibility
of the state to take care of the public’s consti-
tutional and legal rights. We request the
present Government to control the prices of
other consumable items as well as create a
comprehensive National Drug Policy to con-
trol the prices and quality of medicines. Gov-
ernment must ensure their implementation
on medical stores as well.

Services trade deficit shrinks
41.38% in three quarters

cit narrowed by 41.38 percent
during the first three quarters
of the current fiscal year com­
pared  to the  corresponding
period of last year.
The  services  trade  defi­
cit during  July­March (2018­
19)  was  record ed at  US$
2.532 billion against the defi­
cit of US$ 4.320 billion during
July­March (2017­18), show­
ing  decline  of  41.38  percent,

TESCO pays

amount  of  Rs3.4  billion  to

old  girl  died  and  15  others

they received electric shock
after an 11000 KV line
touched  LT line  due  to
heavy  storm  and  rainfall  in
Dewal  Ga rhi  Payan in
Gadoon Amazai  here  on
Thursday.
The  incident  occurred
when  11000  KV  high  volt­
age  line  touched  LT  line
due  to  heavy  storm. A  14­
yeat­old  girl, daughter  of
Sayed Wali Shah was killed
while  15  others  sustained
injuries  and  shifted  to tehsil
hospital.
The  sudden  high  volt­
age in LT line also damaged
a local school and burnt out
refr igerators, fa ns and
other electric  appliances  at
several  homes.  The  school
security  guard  was  among
the  injured.  Local  people
complained  that  11000  KV

and  due  to  heavy  storm  it

the beneficiaries,” the Minis­
ter  noted.  The  Minister  in­
formed the delegation that the
validity of Proof of Registra­
tion (POR) cards  for Afghan
Refugees and tripartite agree­
ment are going to be expired
on June 30, 2019. He said the
Ministry of SAFRON in con­
sultation with all stakeholders
will  submit  summary  to  the
Federal Cabinet for further ex­
tension.  However, he  added,
concrete and robust action to
enhance the repatriation is re­
