PICKING UP THE KELLY

1. SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

1) Hook opening/locking device.

2) Kelly hold back tugger or similar device.

3. SAFETY INFORMATION & LOLER CONSIDERATIONS

1) This is a routine operation therefor utilise the TRIC card as a


lifting plan and risk assessment.

2) A competent person will carry out a pre-use inspection of the


tugger used to pull back the kelly, also all the lifting accessories,
ensure all items are adequate for the load and that the colour
code is current.

3) If a problem is encountered or the plan changes, stop and re-


assess the situation, review the risk assessment and lifting plan.

4) The passage of the Kelly must be made in a controlled manner.

5) Personnel and objects must be kept out of the kelly's path of


travel.

6) Secure footing when operating the hook opening device is


provided.

7) The Driller has overall responsibility for supervising the


operation.

Precautions

1) Ensure that the hook is securely locked.

2) Ensure that the "Hobble" is removed from the bails.

MEN REQUIRED; DRILLER AND THREE FLOORMEN.

4.1 PREPARATION

1) Hold a toolbox talk and complete a TRIC card, ensure each


crewmember is aware of the risks and the controls put in place to
mitigate them, also ensure they are familiar with the lifting plan.

2) Lower blocks to the pick up position.

3) Turn hook to face the kelly.

4) Lock the hook in that position (or nearest to).

5) Open the Hook.

6) Select the correct power assignment and gearing for drilling.

7) Connect the kelly pull back tugger or device.

8) Remove any obstacles to the upward passage of the kelly hose.

4.2 PERFORMANCE

1) Take up the weight of the kelly and kelly sock (rathole) with the
pull back tugger.

2) Release any securing devices.

3) Raise the blocks in a controlled manner until the top of the open
hook is just below the level that the kelly bail, when lent into the
rotary table will reach.

4) Allow the kelly and kelly sock forward passage in a controlled


manner until the kelly bail rests in the position above the hook.

5) Pick up with the blocks engaging the kelly bail with the hook
subsequently closing the hook.

6) Continue picking up with the blocks (ensure bailes seat correctly)


until the kelly is free or the sock (six inches above should be
adequate).

7) Maintain contact with the kelly by the pull back tugger during this
operation.

8) When the kelly is free of the sock control the forward passage
by paying out the tugger line in a controlled manner, do not let
the kelly swing past the centre of the rotary.

9) Lower the kelly to +/- 6” above the rotary table.

10) Slacken off the pull back tugger line.

11) Detach the tugger line from the kelly.

5. ON COMPLETION

1) Ensure the kelly sock is in the storage position.

2) All securing devices are in place.

3) The pull back tugger is reeved back and made secure.

4) Close the sock hatch cover.
