A. Introduction
A few students have a problem with learning English. Do not have the basic is one of the
reasons it is difficult to learn English, so they usually take a long way to learn it. One of
the examples is learning word by word method. On the other hand, people who
experiencing English in their casual activities finding it easier to learn English because
they already get used to it. Thus, as the writer, I would like to inform the method of
learning English through experience
B. Explanation
By learning through experience, human ability to remember something they have done or
experience will increase. Here is some method to learn English through experience
Roleplaying games provides a complex storyline as well as the need to understand every
aspect of the game. Players won’t enjoy the game without proper ability to understand the
dialogue between character, how items work and how the story goes. The similar is also
experienced when you play strategy games. Moreover, online strategy games will also
provide Player-to-player interactions so the games are not only good for your passive
language skill but also your communicative skills. The more you spend your time playing
games in this genre, the better your English will be. Games are recommended to those who
already have good English competence.
2) Learning through film/movies
students get to learn real English and not textbook English.
The English you learn through textbooks is not what we will hear people say
on the street. For example, we might have learned how to say “nice weather
we’re having” While these phrases are technically correct, we almost never
say these in real life.
In contrast, the English spoken in movies is very natural. It is also very close to what we will
hear if you speak with native English speakers too. This will help improve your spoken
English.
Usually, when we learn words traditionally student study things like vocabulary lists.
The problem with learning new words with vocabulary lists is that you can learn what words
mean, but not where and how they are used. For example the word “detective.” From the
dictionary, you’ll know what that it means “a person who investigates crimes”. But unless
you use it, it can be easy to forget. It also doesn’t give you an idea where the word is used
most frequently, and how it is used.
On the other hand, if students learn the word “detective” through watching crime
films, students will know “detective” can mean many things. For example, it can be a title in
front of a person (e.g. “Detective Beckett”). Or maybe it’s the noun referring to the job (e.g.
he’s a detective). And maybe you’ll even hear things that will let you form opinions about the
word (e.g. “you lousy detectives”). This way, you won’t only learn what each word means,
you will also know how it’s used.
It is all about how we say it. Things like body language, expressions and your tone of voice.
Through observing actors in films, not only able to learn new words, students will be able to
understand how they are said. The characters might be sad, happy, surprised or angry. And
students will understand this immediately.
When students get used to the environment where they have to spoke and listen to another
person with English. It will significantly build their ability in English. Especially in speaking
and listening skills. For example, student who finding it hard at first when lecturer explain
about the subject in 100% in English in class sooner will find it easier to understand it later.
Because they used to hear the word and seek for the meaning by visualizing it rather than
open the dictionary and translated it one by one.
C. Conclusion
