The Footwear Museum is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Marikina City.
Marikina City’s main industry is shoemaking and because of this, it is known as the Shoe Capital
of the Philippines. According to former First Lady Imelda Marcos (Wikipedia Article), whose
notorious shoe collection is one of the inspirations for the construction of the museum: “This
museum is making a subject of notoriety into an object of beauty. More than anything, this museum
will symbolize the spirit and culture of the Filipino people.”

The Shoe Museum, initially called Footwear Museum of Marikina, was constructed in
1998 and opened in 2001 as homage to the city’s title as ‘the Shoe Capital of the Philippines’. This
building on its own has an interesting history as it used to be an arsenal during the Spanish times
and a detention cell during the American-Filipino War (Wikipedia Article). The Americans later
on converted it into a motor pool but after World War II, it was converted into a rice mill by the
Tuason family.

A visit to the museum will acquaint visitors on the shoemaking history and process with
its life-size dioramas showing the traditional way to make shoes. Shoe lasts that were used as
master mold for different shoe styles and various materials like natural animal skin (snake, pig,
calf, alligator and sheep) are part of this display. Read short narratives on the history and process
of shoemaking. At the ground floor are giant shoes on display including one that is three feet long.
In addition, the most prominent section of the Show Museum / Footwear Museum of Marikina is
the shoe collection of former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos.

Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish Church

 Marikina City, located east of Manila, is not only famous for its quality shoes. It also holds
one of the country’s oldest Baroque churches, the Santuario y Parroquia del Nuestra Señora de los
Desamparados – or the Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish Church.

Built by the Augustinians in 1687, the church still stands on its original location along J.P.
Rizal Street in Marikina City. It has the glaring features of a Baroque-style architecture — a
heavily-fortified facade, large-scale ceiling paintings, a dramatic central projection of the facade,
a round-style pediment for the single bell-tower and the opulent blending of painting and
architecture.
It is still standing today as one of Marikina’s old churches despite being destroyed a couple
times by 2 earthquakes in 1816 and 1830 and by fire in 1861. It is the home of one of the images
of Mary which has received a Papal seal.

Marikina River Park

It is the most awarded river in the Hall of Fame awardees for the Cleanest Inland Body of
Water in the Philippines. Marikina River Park is a popular camping site, picnic grounds and
recreational park, such as concrete jogging and bike lanes, benches and skating rink.

At night, Marikina River Park transforms into a modern nightlife events center because of
numerous bars, restaurants, cafés and night clubs along the riverbanks. Other attractions in
Marikina River include the Roman Garden, Chinese Pagoda, Kawayanan, Youth Camp, Animal
Trail, Skating Rink and Women's Park. It is also a traditional venue for the Marikina Christmas
Festival which begins annually as early as October.

The Marikina River Park is the “biggest sports and recreational park in the country in a natural
setting”. It is located in Marikina City and runs alongside a portion of the 27 km Pasig-Marikina
River, which is the main river system in Eastern Metro Manila. The Marikina River Park has the
distinction of being the cleanest inland body of water in the Philippines.
 During the Holiday Season, it is the venue for the city’s annual Christmas Festival. It is
also the site for the Mama Mary Fluvial Parade.

Book Museum cum Ethnology Center

Tucked away the quiet streets of Marikina is a humble museum that houses some of the
world's rarest books and a growing artifact collection of our Filipino heritage. The Book Museum
cum Ethnology Center rests under the helm of Atty. Dominador Buhain, who also owns Rex Group
of Companies, a renowned local publishing house

In this way, the Book Museum, built in 2013, is not a formally curated collection of books
organized for educational display. The museum’s book collection, arranged in shelves forming a
wide circle (and surrounding a statue of a large foot — we’ll get back to this later) is rather a
generous, if not whimsical catalog of Buhain’s personal travels, made public because of the
owner’s desire to share his regular book hoard.

The collection found in The Book Museum includes, but is not limited to, miniature books,
the smallest book in the world, the smallest crucifix in the world, the smallest tablet in the world,
and first edition copies of popular and obscure literary works. In addition, the museum is not just
about books. It is also an ethnology center that displays artifacts that the good lawyer had collected
from his immersions in various provinces of our country.

The Valenzuela People's Park, officially the Valenzuela City People's Park and also known
to local residents as simply People's Park or VCPP, is an urban community park located in the city

The Museo Valenzuela is the first museum established in the city. It features a permanent
exhibit of memorabilia from Dr. Pio Valenzuela’s life, as well as a doll diorama of important life
events of the town’s son. Aside from this, the museum also serves as a venue for cultural and
artistic events in the city, such as the yearly arts festival and seminars on history teaching.

Museo ng Valenzuela is one of the city’s main historical and cultural landmarks and houses
a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia that traces Valenzuela’s rich history and immense
progress. The sprawling Museo, with its impressive architecture and preserved Spanish aesthetics,

San Diego de Alcala Church

The first Catholic church that was established in the city is the San Diego de Alcala Church,
through the efforts of Father Juan Taranco and the barangay head of Polo, Don Juan Monsod. It
was completed in 1632, which makes the church almost four centuries old. During the Japanese
occupation, the church was destroyed by bombs, but the bell tower and a part of the front entrance
remained. To this day, the belfry and the arched entrance serves as a reminder of the grand church
that stood here. A new church was built next to the ruins.

Arkong Bato (Stone Arc)

 This stone arc, found along M.H. Del Pilar Street, was built by the Americans in 1910, and
served as the boundary between Rizal and Bulacan province. Before the existence of MacArthur
Highway and NLEX, Valenzuela was already the gateway to the north, albeit with M.H. Del Pilar
being the main road to Northern Luzon. Today, the Arkong Bato marks the boundary between
Barangay Santulan in Malabon and the arch’s namesake, Barangay Arkong Bato in Valenzuela.

Located near the Our Lady of Fatima University, this shrine is the center of the Philippine
Fatima apostolate. It was declared a tourist site in 1982 by the Department of Tourism, and most
recently, it was declared a pilgrimage site by the Diocese of Malolos.
It houses one of the original images of Our Lady of Fatima blessed by Pope Paul VI. Thus,
the church is a major pilgrimage site for Catholics.

Dr. Pio Valenzuela Ancestral Residence

The city got its name from one of its great sons, Dr. Pio Valenzuela, a young medical doctor
and the leader of the Philippine revolutionary movement, the Katipunan. Dr. Valenzuela was born
and raised in this town, which was formerly called Polo. According to the history books,
Valenzuela was part of the triumvirate that led the movement, which included Andres Bonifacio
and Emilio Jacinto. Valenzuela was in charge of the revolutionary publication “Ang Kalayaan”
where he wrote several articles under his nom de plume. The house where he lived and died still
stands to this day, on Veliilla Street in the village of Pariancillo Villa. Visitors, however, may be
limited to view the house from the street as the premises is off-limits to the public.

 The Valenzuela Town Center is a relatively new development. The new mall is located
near Valenzuela People’s Park and offers dining and shopping for locals and visitors, alike. Unlike

San Felipe Neri Church

Like other Catholic churches in the Philippines, it was run by hostile Spanish friars. For
some time, it was the site of bloody encounters between Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish
soldiers.

The San Felipe Neri Church is one of the oldest churches in Metro Manila. The church is
dedicated to the Patron Saint of Rome. Apart from being the center of faith, the church has also
been a site of bloody skirmishes between Philippine revolutionaries and Spanish forces. The
church is now a peaceful sanctuary as it stands out amidst the rows of buildings and houses
around it

Sitting in the midst of a busy street is a memorial that honors the silent heroes of the city
who fought for freedom during World War 2. This was where our #PencilWalks started and it did
pave the mood of our exploration. Mandaluyong have a lot of monuments that honors freedom
fighters and these “bantayog” show clearly how freedom-loving Mandaluyong residents are.

The Liwasang Katubusan is just right in front of “The Market”. It features a female figure
with her hand outstretched and reaching towards the sky – a symbolic movement for freedom. The
memorial happens to also stand beside Don Bosco Technical College, a former seminary that
served as a Japanese headquarters during occupation.

Liberation Marker or Liwasang Katubusan in General Kalentong St., is a memorial

constructed as a fitting tribute to the Mandaluyong heroes of World War II. It is the center of the
annual Mandaluyong Day celebration every 9th of February.

Navotas Centennial Park

The Navotas Centennial Park is a waterfront park in Navotas, Metro Manila, the
Philippines, facing the Manila Bay. It is the largest open space in the city and is CAMANAVA or
North Manila District's version of the Baywalk. A popular jogging, strolling and skating spot
among local residents, the park runs along the waterfront from the R-10 Bridge (also known as
Bangkulasi Bridge) to the Navotas Bus Terminal, just off Circumferential Road 4 in Bagumbayan
North.

The park was opened on January 16, 2006 during the celebration of the 100th Founding
Anniversary of the municipality of Navotas. It was built on the site of a former garbage transfer
station during the term of Mayor Toby Tiangco who described the project as "garbage turned into
gold." The park hosts a variety of activities and local government celebrations throughout the year,
including the annual Pangisdaan Festival commemorating the founding anniversary of the "Fishing
Capital of the Philippines", and the Bangkang de Sagwan race launched by Mayor John Rey
Tiangco in January 2017.

The park is lined with palm trees and lamp posts and has several bleachers near the park's entrance
facing the Manila Bay. It also features a two-way ramp and a stock room built in 2014. The park
hosts aerobics and taebo sessions on weekends and is also a popular venue for outdoor concerts.
In February 2017, the Navotas City Government in partnership with the Metropolitan Manila
Development Authority launched a carless weekend program and designated the Navotas
Centennial Park as a family zone where residents and visitors can enjoy the outdoors as a
community free from pollution and vehicular traffic.

San Jose de Navotas Parish

After san jose de navotas parish was canonically erected on July 1, 1859, the construction
of a provisional parish church started in November of the same year. It was in 1860, under the
helm of Rev. Fr. Matias Naboa that the main altar was completed, the cemetery was inaugurated,
and the belfry was erected. Right from the start, the parish boasted of a spacious churchyard.

Although the earthquake of June 1863 partially demolished the rectory, it was immediately
reconstructed months after, through Fr. Naboa’s initiatives. Several improvements have been made
since then, such as the construction of a complete, new parish complex, still under Fr. Naboa, and
the baptistery, under the supervision of Rev. Fr. Manuel Perez. But, as another earthquake (1880)
jolted the parish rectory, the parish priest, Rev Fr. Marcos Hernandez was forced to stay at the
house of Capitan Juan Sioson, situated in front of the church. On June 1892, Rev. Fr. Tomas Agudo
led the construction of the present–day parish, with the altar done by April 1895.

When the American Fleet of the post–Hispanic period under Commodore Dewey
bombarded the town, the old Augustinian rest house in Banculasi was demolished. Rev. Fr. Nicolas
Avedano, the first permanent Filipino parish priest of San Jose de Navotas Parish, took the parish
records into Bigaa, Bulaan for safekeeping. Unfortunately, the battle front shifted to Bigaa, and
everything that was kept was burned.

The Parish of San Jose de Navotas withstood other endeavors sturdily, from Aglipayan
Schisms of the early 1900’s, the storm of October 16, 1934 that substantially damaged the church,
to the invasion of Japanese armies and the aftermath of the battles. These scars give justice to the
will of the people of Navotas; ever–dedicated, ever–faithful.

Manila Bay provides Navotas with a bountiful source of fish and other marine products,
which constitute the basic diet of the town's residents. Navotas, home to low marginal fisherman,
and big-time trawlers, own the most modern sophisticated fishing boats dominating the fishing
ground of the country today. Marketing of the catch is done in a modern market complex known
as Navotas Fishery Port, premiere fish center of the Philippines with an area of 47.5 hectares and
one of the largest in Asia under the supervision of PFDA (Philippine Fisheries Development
Authority). It is a traditional landing place of commercial fishing boats operating in various fishing
grounds in the Philippines situated on a 47.5-hectare reclaimed land at the Northeastern section of
Manila Bay. Within the complex is a thriving fishing industry, supplying fish to major markets of
Metro Manila. Thousands of buyers visit the port daily where an estimated 20 commercial fishing
vessels call port and unload a total volume of about 800 tons. Overland vehicles from different
provinces also bring in addition another volume of 50 tons. Outside the complex is a business
center with banks, markets, restaurants, and recreational facilities.

This park provides the perfect location for fun sports activities like football and Frisbee,
