TITLE: Equilibrium of a Rigid Body

DATE: May 22, 2008

PARTNERS: Bethany Deibler

PURPOSE: To measure the weight of several different objects using the method of torque and
rotation.

PROCEDURE:

1. Weigh the meter stick and record.

2. Weigh the meter stick clamps and record.
3. Find the center of gravity of the meter stick to the closest .5 mm
4. Hang a 100g weight from one end of the stick. Slide the stick to the point where it balances.
Record the position of the meter stick.
5. Put another weight on the other end of the stick. This time use a 200g weight. Again, slide the
stick to the point where it is balanced and record.
6. Remove both weights. Clamp the meter stick at equilibrium. Put an unknown weight on the end
of the meter stick. Put the 200g weight back on one end and slid this to find the equilibrium of
the system. Record the position of both weights.
7. Weigh the unknown mass.
