4. Launching Water Rockets

This Competition aims at precision flight of the rocket, i.e. to launch the
rocket as close as possible to the target. The target will be placed 60m
from the launcher. (see figure below)

There will be eight (8) launchers available for the launch competition. In

5. Rules for Launching

Each student will launch one (1) rocket at a time.

On the day of rocket making (3 Nov), each student can try to conduct two (2)
test launch. The results will be recorded for back up result. This result will
become official if the competition launch could not be conducted due to poor
weather conditions or other reasons. The student may skip these test
launches.

Night launch may be conducted on Day 2 (3 Nov) to certainly get backup

results. Each rocket will be attached with light sticks and the target area will
be lit up in the same manner. During night launch, we can only use 1 target
for safety reasons, so the speed of launching will be much slower.
If we have to do night launching, visit to Gardens by the Bay will be delayed
or cancelled.

If the test launch were unable to be carried out on the day before, prior to
competition launch (4 Nov), each student can try to conduct one (1) test
launch. The student may skip this test launch.

Each student will conduct two (2) launches for the competition.

If time permits, top 10 students (GOLD band for both launches) will be
launching for the Most Reliable Rocket prize. For this prize, students must
continually hit the GOLD band until the last one standing. If two or more
students continue to tie, the gold band will shrink progressively to find the
winner. No rocket repair is allowed.

Order of Launch will draw lots on Day 2 by the students themselves.

Students must use the launcher assigned to the lots they drew.
It is NOT allowed to choose the launcher.

Each student will have 5 minutes for launch preparation: setting the rocket
onto assigned launcher, pumping the air in the rocket (Air pressure must not
exceed 4 bars. *), adjusting the launcher’s angle / orientation.

*From our local competition with the material provided, 60 meters is achievable with 4
bars of pressure.

Exact distance from the point of impact to bull’s eye will be measured when
the rocket lands inside the GOLD band. The result of both launches will be
recorded. The launch that lands out of the circle will not be measured and
recorded as SILVER, BRONZE or OUT.

If student exceeds time limit, it will be recorded as TIME exceeded.

6. Results

The results and ranking of Launch Competition will be prepared for each
country and informed to each POC after the event.

Best score ranking

The better result between 2 launches is considered for deciding Best Score
Ranking. The students ranked in the 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place will be
awarded.

In case of a draw, the two launches will be taken into consideration to

determine the better place.

Best combined score

Students who succeeded both 2 launches have got “combined score”: the sum
of 1st and 2nd launch results.

Most reliable rocket

The final student who launches the rocket that succeeds in landing inside
Gold Band while others fails. Gold Band may shrink with each subsequent
launch to find winner.
