Mixed Dentition
Mixed dentition period starts with the
change from temporary to permanent dentition
which covers from 6-13 yrs of age
Stages of mixed dentition
Early age 6-8
Middle Age 8-10
Late age 10-13
Characteristics of Mixed Dentition:
1.ugly duckiling stage 8-12 yrs overlapping of
maxillary incisors over mandibular incisors
establishing of a mesial step -conductive to
normal occlusion
2.the end to end contact of molars desappear
3.the MV cusp of maxillary 1st molar comes in
contact w/ the buccal grove of the mandibular 1 st
molar
Dental Age
-particulary important during the mixed dentition
years
-which teeth have erupted
-amount of resorption of the root of primary teeth
‘– amount of development of the permanent teeth
DENTAL AGE 6
:near-simultaneous eruption if the mandibular
central incisorcs the mandibular 1st molars, and
the max 1st molars
DENTAL AGE 7
Thw max central incisors and the mand lateral
incisors erupt , root formation of the max lateral
incisors is well advanced, But is still about 1 year
from eruption, whole the canines and premolars
are still in the stage of crown compltion or just at
the beginning of root formation
DENTAL AGE8

2-3years delay after

Max lateral incisors have been in place for a year
and root on other incisors and first molar is nearly
complete
Root development of the max canines and all
second premolars is just beginning, while about
1/3 of the roor od the mandibular canines and all
of the first premolars have been completed
DENTAL AGE 10
Greater amount of both root resorption of the
primary canines and molars, and root
development of thwir permanent successors
Approximately one half of the root of each
mandibular canine and mandibular first premolar
is complete and there is significant root
development of the mandibular second premolar,
maxillary canine, and maxillary second premolar
Completion of the root of the mandibular incisor
teetg and near-completion of the roots of the
maxillary laterals

Eruption of the mandibular canines, mandibular
first premolars, and maxillary first premolar
The roots of all incisors and first permanent molar
completed.
High Canines-no space
DENTAL AGE 12
Remaining succedaneous permanent teeth erupt
(the max canine and the max and second
premolars)
Best space maintainer- well restored deciduous

The roots of all permanent teeth except the third
molar are complete, and crown formation of the
third molars often has been completed
Ugly Ducking Stage
At dental ages 7-9,there is a space between the 2
central incisors
Central incisors are flared.
Why did flaring happen?
-The unerupted lateral incisors are pressing on
the roots of the central incisors
-Once, the lateral incisors gears away from the
roots of the central, the space will close (not
totally closed). It’s lateral incisors now that flare,
because canines are now pressing in the roots of
the laterals
-Once the canines have erupted , this is the time
that ate spaces (between the 2 central incisors)
will close physiologically.
What is the treatmenr?
NONE
Treatment will only be forced after canine has
erupted and there is still an existing space
present between the 2 central incisors.
As a general guideline, a maxillary central
diastema of 2mm or less will probably close
spontaneously , while total closure of diastema
initially greater than 2mm
