Art. 1 HYDROCONTEST CONCEPT
To heighten the awareness of tomorrow’s engineers, industrialists, opinion leaders and the
general public of what is at stake with regard to energy efficiency in the carriage of goods
and passengers by sea and the nautical industry.
To be a community and an incubation platform, bringing together students, universities,
industrials and sponsors, in order to detect the most promising young talents and the most
innovative ideas, and support their development through the Hydros Foundation.
The Hydrocontest is an international competition open to all for the management of a Project
including at least:
• The design and build of one or two boats. These boats must have technological
innovations enabling them to achieve the most efficient use of energy.
• Their confrontation in the races of the Hydrocontest, in each of the three categories:
Mass Transport, Lightweight Transport Léger and the Long-Distance Race.
• The sharing of skills and knowledge with the other participants, professionals and the
public.
• The distribution of the Hydros Foundation’s message on energy efficiency.
• Communication and logistics of the project.

Teams are also invited to ask their questions in the dedicated Facebook group “Hydrocontest
Community”.
Inspection of the boats for technical compliance with these Rules, and the compliance of the
racing, shall be under the aegis of a Committee of Experts with representatives from the
fields of engineering, technological innovation, carriage of goods and passengers by sea and
from various component parts of the boats. The Committee shall be chaired by a Technical
Director.
Participants
The Hydrocontest is open to any university or engineering school, or a group of schools or
universities such as:
Registration is free.
Each Team will take on one or several people with the following roles:
• Team Manager.
He/she will be in charge of the Team and will be the Team’s main contact with the
Organisation.
• Communication Officer.
He/she will interface with the Hydrocontest’s communication department.
To this extent, he/she will be the Team’s spokesperson.
He/she will represent the Team officially with regard to the media.
He/she will forward the Team’s audio-visual content.
• Logistics Officer.
He/she will be the direct contact with the Hydrocontest’s logistics department.
To this extent, he/she will be in charge of any administrative, logistic and financial
matters relating to Team travel, to the transport of the boat(s), the engine and of any of
the Team’s equipment.
The Team Manager, the Communication Officer, the Logistics Officer, and the boat pilots
must be students under 30 years of age on 31st July 2017.
Once appointed, the Team Manager, Communication Officer and the Logistics Officer
cannot be changes, except in the case of force majeure and with the Organiser’s
consent.

Art. 4 RULES
• Postpone or cancel the Event or to change the dates notified and set out in the
calendar in the event of exceptional weather conditions – strong wind and/or rain,
excessive heat - and/or in any other situation that might endanger the safety of the
participants and/or the public.
• Postpone one or several legs or races or any other part of the Event if the weather
conditions represent a danger for the Teams and/or their boats, and/or if the wave
height exceeds 30 cm.
The Organiser reserves the right to refuse the participation of a Team if it fails to satisfy all of
the conditions required under these Rules.
The Organiser alone shall decide whether to start, postpone or cancel a race.
In the event of differences with regard to the interpretation or these Rules, the French
language and the French version hereof shall prevail.
Each Team shall be responsible for reading, understanding, and complying with these Rules.
In registering to take part, each Team accepts to comply with the Hydrocontest Rules and
with the Organiser’s decisions.
Art. 5 REGISTRATION
Participants effect their pre-registration via the online registration platform, accessible in the
Team Area of the following website www.hydrocontest.org.
The organiser reserves the right to refuse a Team’s application if the quality and the rigour of
the application are considered insufficient.

Art. 6 LIABILITY
The Organiser’s liability shall be limited to assembling the means necessary for the
Hydrocontest to take place in accordance with these rules.
The Participant undertakes to take full responsibility for his/her participation in the
Hydrocontest, be it for his/her Team or boat(s), throughout the preparation and during the
Event.
The Organiser disclaims any liability in the event of injury or damage caused by the
Participants to their own team members or to third parties, whether during the preparation for
the Hydrocontest or during the Event itself.
Art. 7 INSURANCE
Each Participant shall take out a Third Party Liability Insurance issued by a recognised
organisation.
The Hydros Foundation shall not be held liable for damage caused by a Participant to
another Participant or to a third party.
Each Participant shall take out insurance providing repatriation cover in the event of injury,
illness or accident to one or several members of the Team. The Organiser shall not be held
liable in this regard.
In promoting the Hydrocontest, the Organiser reserves the right to use any images, sound,
video and interviews of the Participants, their families and friends, on any media, during their
preparation and when they are in the zone of the Event, in Switzerland, Europe and the rest
of the world for a period of 10 years.
The Participant warrants and represents that the project submitted in the competition (the
"Project") will be original and created legally and that it will not violate any third party rights
with regard to intellectual property, advertising or other legal or moral rights.
The Participant hereby certifies that he/she holds all the rights connected with the Project,
including, without limitation, the intellectual property rights attaching thereto.
In submitting his/her Project, and, for the Student class, accepting from the Hydros
Foundation the funding to take part in the Hydrocontest, the Participant irrevocably grants the
Organiser and its beneficiaries (including any licensees), the right and the permission to
reproduce, code, stock, copy, transmit, publish, display, broadcast, use or re-use any image,
information and data related to the Project, for conceptual or marketing purposes, without
limitation in time or geographically, and without the prior consent of the Participant.
The Participant irrevocably grants the Organiser and its beneficiaries, the right and the
permission to take part, in any form whatsoever, in the future developments of the Project.

Art. 9 RACING
Entering either:
• One single boat which will be entered in all three competitions.
OR
• Two boats, one entered in the Mass Transport competition, the other in the
Lightweight Transport competition, and one or the other entered in the Long-Distance
Race.
If, during the course of the Hydrocontest, one of the two boats were to become unusable, the
Participant will be authorised to use one boat for all three competitions.
The Organiser reserves the right to add other competitions, such as speed races, for
example.
Courses
Racing will be organised over several courses.
Mass Transport:
A course of approximately 400 metres, favouring long segments.
Lightweight Transport:
A course of approximately 600 metres, favouring short segments.
Long-Distance Race:
A course of approximately 300 metres per lap, favouring long segments.
Race formats

For each of the two categories, each Team’s best time around the course will be retained in
drawing up the qualification rankings. Only the 16 best Teams in each category will take part
in the racing.
RACING
For each of the two categories, the racing is divided into 5 stages:
• Round 1
• Round 2 (draft)
• Quarter-finals
• Semi-finals
• Final
The races of the quarter-finals will be run in accordance with the following:
• The 8 Teams, half from Round 1 and half from Round 2, will be divided into 4 heats
• In each heat, 2 Teams will race against one another, on the two separate courses.
• The first Team to win 2 races will go through to the semi-finals. The other Team will
be knocked out.
The races of the semi-finals will be run in accordance with the following:
• The 4 Teams will be divided into 2 heats.
• In each heat, 2 Teams will race against one another, on the two separate courses.
• The first Team to win 2 races will go through to the final. The other Team will be
knocked out.

The races of the finals will be run in accordance with the following:
• The 2 Teams will race against one another on the two separate courses.
• The first Team to win 3 races will be declared the winner of the category.
For each of the two categories, the Organiser reserves the right to organise a small final
between the 2 Teams that were knocked out in the semi-finals.
Long-distance Race:
The Long-distance Race is a fleet race in which all Teams will race against one another
simultaneously on a single course.
The Organiser reserves the right to modify the duration of the race, and the amount of
energy allowed, in case of inclement weather.
Art. 10 CALENDAR
A calendar will be provided in an amendment to these rules. Teams will receive the final
programme each morning during the compulsory briefing sessions.
Each boat will run on a given course with a pre-defined engine power, in the shortest time
possible.

BOAT(S)
• Dimensions: each boat must fit into the rectangular “dimensions box” whose inner
dimensions are:
o 2m x 2.5m x 2.5m.
o These dimensions must include all parts of the boat, as it will be used during
racing. This must be complied with in all of the boat’s geometrical
configurations, if it has several configurations, including the phases during
which it changes configuration, if the change takes place during racing.
o No part of the boat must endanger the Teams or the other boats.
• Towing: each boat must be fitted with a fixed towing ring able to withstand 2’000 N
(about 200kg), in order for it to be towed.
• Lifting: each boat must be fitted with one or several rings by which the boat can be
lifted with its maximum load.
• Movement: each boat must be able to move and be manoeuvrable in forward and
reverse gear.
• Markings: the compulsory markings on each boat will be set out in an amendment to
these Rules.
A boat will not be authorised to start a race if the markings have not been complied
with.
The Organiser reserves the right to refuse a boat that displays marking judged
contrary to the values and the message of the Hydros Foundation.
Each Team in the Student class must leave free from any marking, and at the
disposal of the Organiser, the forward 50% of its boat(s), on all surfaces, be they on
deck, on the outer and/or inner sides.
The Organiser may choose to affix any markings aiming to promote the messages of
the Hydros Foundation, and/or its partners.
Teams will be supplied with all of these elements upon their arrival at the Event and
will be fitted by the Organiser.
• Video images: the Organiser reserves the right to mount a camera on each boat.
• Stability testing device: for this test to be carried out, each boat must have a
temporary system enabling a light but resistant beam to be fitted at the point where
the beam is greatest. It will be fitted on the deck on a level with the port and starboard
freeboard. The beam’s length should enable the boat to be pulled upwards on one of
its sides, to 1 metre from its fore and aft line.

• Handling: each Team shall have an handling equipment such as a cradle or a trailer
to move and park its boat(s) safely and independently.
UNSINKABILITY
The technical specifications of the engine will be specified in an appendix to these rules.
Each Team may modify the fairing of the POD according to the following conditions:
• Without any modification to any of the parts of the POD provided by the Organiser,
nor their position and means of fixation.
• By the addition of any material in order to improve its hydrodynamics.
In addition to the engine supplied by the Organiser (Art. 15), each Team will be able to use a
second engine during the event. However, the simultaneous use of two engines on the same
boat shall remain forbidden.
Each Team wishing to purchase a second engine must contact the company Watt&Sea
(contact@wattandsea.com), and inform the Organiser as soon as possible by conveying it
the serial number.
This second engine must correspond to the references of the official engine of the Event, and
the cost is to be borne entirely by the Team (purchase, transport, etc.).

• Nominal tension: 36V
• Nominal capacity: 7.8Ah
The technical specifications of the battery will be specified in an amendment to these rules.
The Organiser may limit the amount of energy available in the drive battery for each race.
The amounts will be specified in an amendment to these rules.
The battery cannot be replaced during any stage of the race, be it the rounds 1, the rounds 2,
the quarter-finals, the semi-finals of the finals.
During racing, it shall be forbidden to use drive batteries other than those supplied by the
Organiser.
It shall be forbidden to consume energy stored before the race, other than that of the drive
battery and potential side batteries.
It shall be forbidden to use other batteries, except to provide power for any visualisation,
satellite positioning and telemetry equipment.
Wind and hydraulic energy are the only sources of energy authorised in addition to the drive
battery.
ELECTRONICS
This speed controller will allow for a water-cooling system and will include anti-spark battery
and motor connectors.
The technical specifications of the controller will be specified in an appendix to these rules.
The speed-controller must be water-cooled and each Team shall provide the pump and
tubing needed for the system to function.
The following connectors must be used and will be provided by the Organiser:
• AMASS MT60 for the speed-controller – engine connexion
• AMASS XT90-S for the speed-controller – battery connexion
Each Team wishing to add an extension shall obtain a set of XT90 or XT90-S.
Several settings of the controller will be locked by the Organiser to prevent damage to the
controller, battery and engine.
Teams are reminded that they are not allowed to open the speed-controller box.
All of the electrical circuits on board the boat must be protected in order to avoid personal
injury and short circuits.

Protection may take the form of limitation or interruption of the current, circuit breaker(s) or
by the insertion of individual circuit fuses.
All of the electrical and electronic casings must be made of transparent material or at least
have a transparent cover.
Each boat shall have, on its outside, a visible and easily accessible emergency stop button
for the power supply. It shall also be possible to remotely cut off the engine power supply
with the remote control.
An electronic compliance inspection may be carried out by the Organiser at any time.
LOADS TO BE CARRIED
The load elements will be given to the Teams upon their arrival at the Event. Only the sets of
ballast supplied by the Organiser may be used during racing.
The loading of the load elements shall be carried out with the boat afloat and following the
vertical Z-axis (as defined in an orthonormal coordinate system).
When piloting the boats, the following conditions must be complied with:
• There must be no human contact with the boat during racing, i.e. between the start
line, less one boat length and the finish line, plus one boat length.
• No more than 3 persons from any one Team may be present on the piloting pontoon.
• There shall be no piloting, directly or indirectly, from or by any aircraft or boat.
• Automatic pilots may be used if the human pilot is able, at any time and in any
situation, to take over control.
• Data flow between the boat and the pilot(s) is authorised.
• Pilot(s) must wear
o A lifejacket if piloting is carried out close to the water.
o Shoes which provide electrical insulation.
• Team members must wear a lifejacket each time the boat is handled in the water:
launch, trial runs, waiting for the starting signal, hauling out, loading of ballast and
loads, etc.
• Team members must wear gloves when handling the ballast.
Failure to comply with these safety rules may give rise to a Participant being excluded from
qualifications or racing.

INCIDENTS ARISING DURING RACING
In the event of fire on board a boat during a race, or in any circumstance representing a
danger for a Team member or any other person, the Organiser reserves the right to
intervene in order to avoid an incident from turning into a safety issue.
In the event of temporary failure, the pilot will have 30 seconds in which to restart the boat
but cannot carry out any physical intervention on his/her boat.
In the event of a major breakdown or of an accident arising on the course, the pilot must
distance his/her boat from the course if able to do so.
In the event of a breakdown requiring intervention on the boat, the pilot shall:
• Cut the supply of electrical power to the engine by remote control, then
• Ask the Race Manager to have a safety boat remove the boat from the race area.
Except for the Long-distance Race, no intervention or repairs can be carried out on a boat
during a race.
In the event of a failure, and if the boat is supposed to take part in the next race, the Team
will be granted 10 minutes to fix it from the moment the boat reaches the piloting pontoon.
In the event of damage caused by another boat, and if the boat is supposed to take part in
the next race, the Race Manager reserves the right to postpone the race so that the Team
can carry out the necessary repairs.
PROTEST
Protests must be made in writing and lodged with the Race Manager within 30 minutes
following the crossing of the finish line or following the retirement of all boats from the race.
BRIEFING SESSIONS
Each Team must be represented at least by the Team Manager and the members who are to
pilot that day.

RULES OF CONDUCT
The Organiser may at any time penalize or exclude a Participant if he/she considers that the
Participant’s conduct does not comply fully with the rules of the Event.
In particular:
• The rules of conduct such as they apply to the Event: being under the influence of
alcohol or illegal substances.
• The requirement that each member of the Team must wear shoes.
• Prohibit handling or manoeuvring the boat in the water, if bathing is prohibited by the
authorities with jurisdiction in this matter.
• Apply specific safety measures to avoid any danger being caused when boats are
being handled in the water, and in particular, any danger regarding the boat’s
propellers.
• To apply financial and/or racing penalties to Participants who hinder the smooth
running of the Hydrocontest by their lack of preparation, late presentation or the lack
of compliance of the documents requested, or arriving late at the start of the Event,
as well as being late for the start of a race.
Art. 12 SAFETY
The Hydrocontest’s Technical Director shall call the Team Managers to one or several safety
briefing sessions before the start, and if necessary, during the Event. Attendance at these
briefing sessions is compulsory. The Technical Director will display the Race Rules, the
Sailing Instructions and the Safety Rules of the Event on the “Official Noticeboard”.
Team Managers must notify the Technical Director as soon as possible of any functional
anomaly on his boat(s) or of any problem regarding safety.
Once a Team’s registration has been confirmed, it must send a technical document pack in
two parts to the Organiser in two parts.
• A general plan of the boat giving dimensions and the load waterline.

• A complete and fully detailed technical description of all the boat’s electrical systems,
together with photographs. This description can be in the form of one or several
wiring diagrams containing at least the following elements:
o A point-by-point wiring diagram of the boat indicating the location of all the
systems main relevant electrical components.
o The places and notation of all circuit protection devices.
o An illustration of the way in which the emergency shutdown system functions,
and the presence of emergency switches. This may be illustrated on a
separate sheet if necessary.
This pack will be used by the experts of the Hydros Foundation in order to prepare their
technical boat inspections as best they can. The Organiser will not disclose the information
contained therein before the beginning of the Event.
The Organiser reserves the right to refuse the participation of a Team if the video does not
demonstrate the proper functioning of the boat.
Each Team’s boat(s) will be inspected one after the other according to the following
nomenclatures:
• Stability.
Stability will be checked in a tank or alongside the launch pontoon.
Boats must be in condition to sail in order for the inspection to be carried out.
o The Mass Transport with a load of 200 kg, engine, battery and other
equipment.

o The Lightweight Transport boats with a load of 20 kg, engine, battery and
other equipment.
The Organiser may carry out a stability test at any time on boats which are in
condition to sail. The Organiser will ask the Team Manager to install the test beam
which will be lifted until the boat reaches a 30° angle of heel.
• Unsinkability of boats.
Boats’ unsinkability will be checked using the technical information and during
inspections.
The electronics of the boats’ external control system may also be inspected (if
applicable).
After inspections and if the boat(s) comply with all of the technical rules of the Hydrocontest,
a technical compliance certificate will be issued to the Team Manager.
Any changes to parts of the boat and/or its geometry must be submitted for approval to the
Committee of Experts.
Boats can be developed if the developments comply in every way with the Hydrocontest
rules.
A technical inspection may be carried out by the Technical Director or an Inspector at any
time.
In order to assist and support Teams with communication and the search for partners, the
Organiser shall provide:
• Videos and photos of the Hydrocontest 2016
• A presentation pack for the Hydrocontest 2017
• Other elements which may help the Teams
The Organiser sets up a programme promoting the Teams, before, during and after the
Event, including:
• All of the Teams will be presented on the Teams page on the website
www.hydrocontest.org.
• Teams’ preparation will be presented and kept up to date on the website and the
social networks.
• Each project will be promoted with the media, professionals and the general public, in
particular during the Event itself.
Teams are encouraged to provide the organiser with any useful content (videos, photos,
articles, press review, etc.), about the team, the main lines of work or information about the

conditions of preparation. This content will then be shared and promoted by the Organiser.
Teams with good visibility find it easier to find partners.
Financial support:
The Organiser shall grant funding to Teams who have complied with all of the conditions set
out herein, and with any amendments and extra requirements.
The amount of the grant will be calculated on the basis of the GDP per capita in purchasing
power parities, and of the geographic distance from Switzerland, of each Team’s country.
See the calculation method set out in Appendix hereto.
Payment will be made after the end of the Event upon presentation of an accounting
document which is valid in Switzerland and drawn up by the Team Manager. See the sample
set out in Appendix hereto.
The Organiser reserves the right not to pay the funding if it considers that one or several
rules set out herein, or amendments and extra requirements have not been complied with.
Material support:
The Organiser will send the following items to each of the Teams:
Each Team will have the following facilities at their disposal during the Event:
The Organiser will supply Teams with breakfast, lunch and dinner free of charge during the
Event period.

Art. 16 LOGISTICS
The Organiser will send the items as described in Article 15 to each registered Team, the
cost of which shall be borne by the Organiser. These items will be sent to the Teams listed
once pre-registration has been closed.
Teams receiving the items with an ATA carnet shall keep it, and present it systematically with
all related items, to customs offices on both sides of each border crossed, so that it can be
stamped by the customs services.
In the event of the ATA carnet being lost, or in the event of failure to declare the items when
going through customs, resulting in a loss of the guarantee attaching to the ATA carnet, the
amount of the guarantee will be deducted from the funding granted by the Hydros
Foundation.
• The administrative, customs and legal formalities according to the rules and
regulations in their country, as well as those of Switzerland.
• Transport costs, both outside and within Switzerland, and customs of any forwarding
agents and other costs relating to:
o The forwarding of the items sent to them by the Hydros Foundation from their
own country to the site of the Event.
The Organiser will send the “Hydrocontest Logistics Plan” to each Team.
Teams must have left the Event site with their equipment and boats no later than the first
business day after the Award Ceremony.
Any Team of the Student class that is late in removing its boat(s) and equipment will be
penalized by the application of a charge at a daily rate of CHF 100, deducted from the
funding granted by the Hydros Foundation.
Art. 17 PROPERTY
At the end of the Hydrocontest, the Organiser will recover the engine, the speed controller,
the connectors, the batteries and the miniature camera from each Team. This equipment will
be stored and made available to teams taking part in future editions.

Art. 18 TEAM UNDERTAKING
• Publish on its website and other means of communication, a standard text that the
Organiser will send which presents the Hydrocontest.
• Present its project at Tech Talks held during the Event. Every day, after the racing,
several Teams are invited to present their project to other participants, professionals
and the public. Apart from describing the Team and the conditions surrounding the
preparation, emphasis should be placed on the technological innovations, conceptual
choices and the technical solutions adopted in order to attain the best possible level
of energy efficiency. The Organiser will send a framework to the Teams.
• Make an A0 presentation poster of its project, including at least the contents of its
Tech Talk, and send it by electronic mail to contact@hydrocontest.org before 9th July
2017. The Organiser will send a framework to the Teams.
• Return the whole engine, speed controller, connectors, miniature camera and
batteries, in good condition, at the end of the Event.
• Leave all of the facilities used in the condition they were found.
The Organiser reserves the right to deduct an amount of up to CHF 1’500 from the funding
granted by the Hydros Foundation in the event of damage and/or loss of items put at its
disposal by the Hydros Foundation.

All of the Teams in the running for an Off Race Prize may receive a visit from the Jury during
the Event. Judges may ask extra questions and discuss the Team’s application in a little
more detail.
The application for the “Hydrocontest Tech Talk Prize” and the “Hydrocontest Spirit and
Values Prize” is automatic for all teams.
Teams that are interested must submit an application of no more than 1500 words,
with photos, drawings or animations, including at least:
o A description of the concept and how it works.
o The advantages and the disadvantages of the concept.
o Photos of the boat (view from the bow, ¾ profile from the bow, ¾ profile from
the stern, side view and seen from above).
o The year of the boat’s first participation in the Hydrocontest.
o How the boat has been developed if this is not its first participation.

o A description of research and tests carried out in order to demonstrate the
energetic efficiency of the boat.
To be eligible for this prize, a Team must have validated at least one time during the
qualifications of the category for which he is applying.
Teams that are interested must submit an application of no more than 1000 words,
with photos, videos, drawings or animations, including at least:
o A description of the conceptual approach, design tools, materials and
manufacturing processes.
o Photos of the boat both sailing and ashore (view from the bow, ¾ profile from
the bow, ¾ profile from the stern, side view and seen from above).
o A video of the boat sailing.
o The year of the boat’s first participation in the Hydrocontest.

A Team’s communication during the Event and the use made of the stand-cum-
workshop, with plans, drawings, photo and a national flag or any other communication
feature will also be taken into account by the Jury.
The Teams are also encouraged to set up activities linked to their project which
enhance awareness. This might include, for example, an official presentation of the
boat, conferences, or activities on social media.
Team commitment to the Hydrocontest on social media will also be taken into
account by the Jury. This might include, for example, following the Hydros Facebook
page and the Hydrocontest and Hydros twitter accounts, the Hydros YouTube page
or the use of the #Hydrocontest hashtag.
Teams will be judged on the quality and creativity of the content, the volume of
activity as well as the impact of the campaign (press review, number of visits to the
website, YouTube, how many likes, retweets and number of people taking part in
events and so on).
Teams that are interested must submit an application of no more than 1000 words,
plus a portfolio, including at least:
o A communication plan (500 words maximum) presenting the main idea, the
objectives, the strategy and the calendar of the communication campaign.
This calendar should include the activities which are planned after the
application submission deadline.
o A report on the repercussions of the communication campaign (500 words
maximum), evaluating the success in relation to the objectives which had
been set. Teams must use key figures, such as traditional media spin-off, the
number of views, shares, likes or the number of people who have attended
activities.
o A portfolio setting out the main examples of the campaign. This might include,
for example, photos and videos of the project’s progress, a press review, links

to and screenshots of articles and publication on the website and social
media, posters and brochures and so on.
To be eligible for this prize, a Team must have validated at least one time during the
qualifications.
They will be both assessed by the other Teams and a panel of experts, on the quality,
relevance and intelligibility, of the content and form of their:
o Tech Talk, including the medium presentation
o Presentation poster
Prize-money:
Each of the Grands Prix and Prizes awarded to Teams in the Student class at the Award
ceremony will be accompanied by prize-money, as set out below.
