To Hire or to Fire

Being the key connection between workers and managers is a major responsibility. Being

in charge of hiring and deciding who gets to work for their company is another responsibility.

These are just some of the many responsibilities a human resource manager has to deal with.

The job duties of a human resource manager according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is

“They plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of an organization. They oversee

the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff; consult with top executives on strategic

planning; and serve as a link between an organization's management and its employees.” Human

resource managers organize everything and make sure a company runs smooth. Without them, a

company would be a mess. They are the key to success. These human resource managers help by

putting effort into seeking qualified future workers, having good communication with workers

both old and new, and by looking out for their company’s best interest.

A human resource manager can’t just hire anyone. During the hiring process, they must

seek out qualified workers. Most organizations want to attract and seek people who are

well-suited for the job and keep them. (Human Resources) The workers must meet the

companies expectations and stand out in their interview. An interview is a great way to see if

someone is fit for the job being offered. It’s up to the human resource manager (HR) to ask the

right questions. Asking questions like “Tell me something good about yourself.” isn’t a good

way to get to know someone. According to mentor Julia Rau, who has experience in human

resources in a retail store, questions like that are basic and easy to prepare for. Asking questions

like “What makes you different from everyone else applying?” is a better question to ask. This

makes the person being interviewed open up and try to impress the interviewer. After having

multiple interviews, HR has to compare answers to see which person best suits the job and which

person impressed the most. Being lazy and just hiring anybody is bad for a company because if

the wrong person is hired, it can ruin teamwork. Not everyone applying for a job is a dedicated

hard working person. Some people apply for a job because they need fast cash and aren’t

passionate. Finding out who is passionate about the job and who isn’t is something an HR has to

figure out in order to make their company succeed, and interview questions, and looking at their

qualifications are a great way to do it.

After hiring someone who’s qualified, it’s a human resource manager’s job to keep a

healthy relationship with that worker and all workers. They have to make sure all workers get

along as well. They have to unite everyone together and fix all issues. These issues can range

from a worker not liking another workers language, attitude, or lifestyle. The world is unique and

evolving. HR’s have to make sure everyone is on the same page. Depending on their workplace,

managers also have to have a good relationship with their customers. For example, if someone is

a human resource manager in a store, they’ll have regular customers and it’s important they have

a healthy relationship with them. A recent study showed that elderly shoppers are often more

frequent customers at stores than other consumers. Many of them shop for small quantities on a

daily basis, which ends up with them developing a strong relationship with the staff over the

years.

(Renko & Petljak 116) Worker lives matter, too. Having good communication with them is

crucial because they handle issues between managers and workers. If a worker were to have a

problem with management they’d have to go their HR to solve it. A worker would be more likely

to do it if they had a relationship with their HR. A human resource manager also has to send

messages from higher management to normal workers. “They are often seen as the link between

an organization’s management and its employees, as their work runs the gamut from providing

consultation on strategic planning with top executives to recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new

staff.” (Human Resources) An example of this is if a new policy gets introduced. Another way a

human resource manager is a company’s key to success is their effort in looking for what’s best

for their company. “Human resource managers are a key player in the creation and development

of a highly productive workforce. They are in the center of the debate on the competitiveness of

businesses. (Brito 1) Human resource managers are pretty high up in power and knowledge.

They hear a lot of things from higher up people like corporate managers. By knowing what their

company wants and expect they can make it better. For example, if their company was struggling

in coworkers getting along or working as a team, they can look out for their company and try to

get all the workers to be on the same page. They can also find ways to make their workplace a

better environment. An example of this would be if their boss were to tell them they were going

bankrupt. They can have meetings with all their workers to go over ways to make more money,

put posters or fliers up to encourage more hard work which ends up making more profit in the

end. An HR looks at their company's future and do whatever it takes to make sure it looks good

and profitable.

In conclusion, human resource managers are important for companies. They help be

messengers for corporate and make sure there’s no confusion. They help pick qualified people

for the job to further a company's future, and they always look out for their company. Overall,

they are pretty much the backbone of a company when it comes to employment. They are the

ones who decide whether one is qualified enough for the job, and if they are not qualified, human

resource managers have the capacity to respectfully ask them to leave.
