0 Balance Disc Replacement

Rev1- 1/25/10 48
The balance disc check is part of the annual maintenance process and gives insite
on how well the pump is doing.
Before beginning this check: disconnect power to the motor, drain piping
and disconnect discharge spool piece, so the pump discharge can be accessed.

1. Remove drain line by unscrewing the fitting which

connects to the drain pipe.

2. Remove throttle nipple from cavity cover.

3. Remove 3 sets of set screws, lock washers

and safety clips.

Rev1- 1/25/10 49
If you have a 4” or a 6” discharge connection follow steps 4; otherwise skip to step 6.

4. Loosen flange bolts.

5. Notice gap between flanges. If this is not present,

pry flanges apart using a flat head screwdriver.

Rev1- 1/25/10 50
6. Remove discharge retaining ring
using a flat head screw driver.

7. Remove discharge housing – this might be

difficult to pull out because of the o-ring.

8. Remove cavity cover and its o-ring.

Rev1- 1/25/10 51
9. Remove nut, lock washer and washer.

10. Before removing the balance disc, note

that there is a small key between the
disc and the shaft. BE CAREFUL NOT TO
DROP KEY.
Slowly remove the balance disc and the
bearing holder and careful feel for the
key removing this with the other
components.

11. Notice the balance disc’s lower washer. This is a

special thickness washer, so ensure it is not
deformed or damaged in any way. Replace washer
if damaged.

Rev1- 1/25/10 52
12. Inspect balance disc, front and back. Slight wear marks
are ok, but the bearing surface should not be worn more
than 0.020” (0.51 mm).

13. Inspect bearing holder face. Slight wear marks are ok but
it is recommended to clean the face with Emery cloth
(or other mild abrasive material) and rinse with water
before reinstalling.

14. Pass air through throttle nipple and rinse to ensure orifice is free
of debris.

Discharge End Reassembly:
Ensure all o-rings are in good shape; replace if new ones are available.

1. Install bearing holder and let it rest on

the end ring lip or - for 4” and 6”
discharge pumps – the stage diffuser.
Install balance disc and key. Install
washer, lock washer and nut. Tighten
nut to torque specification in the table.
Balance Disc Nut
Install cavity cover with o-ring. Install Discharge Torque, ft-lb (N-m)
discharge housing WITHOUT any o-rings, 3" 50 ( 68 )
at first, and align to bearing holder pin. Align 4" 75 ( 102 )
discharge housing side hole with cavity cover
6" 90 ( 122 )
hole and install throttle nipple briefly to
ensure alignment is correct. Remove throttle nipple and discharge
housing carefully. Place large o-ring around discharge housing and
the small o-ring in the side hole. Install discharge housing back and
align with bearing holder pin (for 3” discharge pumps).

Rev1- 1/25/10 54
2. Install retaining ring.

3. For the throttle nipple installation, wrap the threaded

portion in Teflon tape to ensure sealing but also to protect
the o-ring in the discharge housing. You might need to realign
discharge housing side hole with cavity cover side hole.

4. For 4” and 6” discharge pumps, tighten the flange bolts to

compress the stack (tighten these in a star pattern at 95 ft-lb (123 N-m)).

5. Add the safety clips onto the retaining ring and secure them with the
lock washer and set screw.

6. Reconnect elbow fitting to drain line fitting.
