STANDARDS: CC.2.2.HS.D.2
OBJECTIVES:
Language:
Students will be able to write the formulas for soh cah toa
Content:
Students will be able to differentiate between the three formulas given a right triangle
MOTIVATION:
(Building background)
Start with Pythagorean Theorm. Have the students solve for a side and then say now that you
know how to solve for a side, but this is how to solve for an side given an angle. This is relating
the material to the students prior knowledge about right triangles.
PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback)
I will have the content and language objectives written on the board. I will begin with a do-now to
get the students engadged dealing with the Pythagerean Theorm. Then I will go over the key
vocabulary and have the students label a right triangle given a missing angle. I will tell the
students everytime they work with a right triangle they need to label where the hypotnuse,
opposite and adjacent sides are in order to include repetition. Then I will indroduce how to solve
for sides using the formulas for right triangles. I will pair the students using the Mix and Match
technique. This will be used by the Think-Pair-Share strategy. They will work on several problems
together and write their answers on their whiteboards. I will use questioning throughout the
entire lesson.
EXTENSION:
This lesson can be extended by going into more depth with all the vocabulary words. I can also
have the students work on more problems with one another in order for them to learn the
practice and strategies needed to solve for missing sides in right triangles.
