HOJA DE PROBLEMAS DE MECÁNICA DE FLUIDOS

1. Oil (ρOil = 900kg/m3) flows downward through a vertical pipe contraction as shown in Fig. 01.
If the mercury manometer reading, h, is 100 mm, determine the volume flowrate for frictionless
flow. Is the actual flowrate more or less than the frictionless value? Explain.

Fig. 01 Fig. 02 Fig. 03 Fig. 04

2. A siphon is used to draw water at 70ºF from a large container as indicated in Fig. 02. The inside
diameter of the siphon line is 1 in. and the pipe centerline rises 3 ft above the essentially constant
water level in the tank. Show that by varying the length of the siphon below the water level, h,
the rate of flow through the siphon can be changed. Assuming frictionless flow, determine the
maximum flowrate possible through the siphon. The limiting condition is the occurrence of
cavitation in the siphon. Will the actual maximum flow be more or less than the frictionless
value? Explain.
3. Water flows through a vertical pipe as is indicated in Fig. 03. Is the flow up or down in the pipe?
Explain.
4. Consider the flow shown in Fig. 04. If the flowing fluid is water, determine the axial (along the
pipe) and normal (perpendicular to the pipe) components of force that the pipe puts on the fluid
in the 6 m section shown.
5. Water flows through a 2 ft diameter pipe arranged horizontally in a circular are as shown in Fig.
05. If the pipe discharges to the atmosphere (p=14.7 psia), determine the x and y components of
the resultant force exerted by the water on the piping between sections (1) and (2). The steady
flowrate is 3000 ft3/min. The loss in pressure due to fluid friction between sections (1) and (2) is
25 psi.

6. Two water jets collide and form one homogeneous jet as shown in Fig. 06. a) Determine the
speed V and direction θ, of the combined jet. (b) Determine the head loss for a fluid particle
flowing from (1) to (3), from (2) to (3). Gravity is negligible.

7. Fluid flows between the radial disks shown in Fig. 7. Estimate the pressure in the 2-cmdiameter
pipe if the fluid exits to the atmosphere. Neglect viscous effects. The fluid is:

(a) Water (b) Air

8. Calculate the force components of the water acting on the deflecting blade shown in Fig. 8 if:
(a) The blade is stationary
(b) The blade moves to the right at 60 ft/sec
(c) The blade moves to the left at 60 ft/sec

Fig. 08 Fig. 09
9. The pressure drop  p in the pipe of Fig. 9 depends on the average velocity, the pipe diameter,
the kinematic viscosity, the length L of pipe, the wall roughness height e, and the fluid density.
Find an expression for  p .
10. Derive an expression for the torque T needed to rotate a disk of diameter d at the angular
velocity  in a fluid with density  and viscosity  if the disk is a distance t from a wall. Also,
find an expression for the power requirement.
