Practicum 2074

PREFACE
PRACTICUM, as prescribed in the syllabus for the fourth year first semester of
Bachelor in Architecture degree program under Tribhuvan University, is a specified
subject to be conducted by Department of Architecture. This report is based on the
works performed by me, Dharmisara Subedi, as a trainee architect at “Shah Consult
International.” The firm has provided me with ample opportunities to acquaint
myself in the professional field of Architecture.

During this period (October 29, 2017-March 25, 2018) of practicum, I was involved in
various design projects, concept development, municipal drawings, structural
drawings, presentation drawings and 3Ds.

Thus, the internship period has an important role in shorting out of the trainee’s
performance in profession level.
The report contains all the works that I attended during my stay in the firm.

Thanking you,
Dharmisara Subedi

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The practicum training period has been the finest learning experience for me.
I got an opportunity to know a lot about the actual office environment; henceforth it
has helped me build up confidence to effort through my professional career. This
training period has been the best way to find out the difference between theoretical
knowledge that we get inside the classroom and the implementation of that
knowledge into reality. I have got chance to upgrade my research quality and
communication skills.
I would like to take this opportunity to show my sincere gratitude to Ar.
Poonam Shah and Dr. Sanjiv Shah for providing me such a convincing platform by
accepting me as a trainee architect in their prestigious firm. Poonam mam’s able

as well as professional knowledge. I feel greatly privileged to have got valuable
prospect of working under her prolific supervision.
I hereby also would like to give my thankful regards to all the staffs of Shah
Consult International for their remarkable guidance throughout my training period.
My journeys through the practical experience would not have been successful
without their continuous guidance and supervision in my works. I would also like to
show my sincere gratitude to Ar. Anita Shrestha, Merina Bajracharya, Er.
Radheshyam Chaudhary, Er. Niranjan Shrestha, Er. Rubi Bhatta for their guidance

INTRODUCTION
Architecture is a utilitarian art. The architecture students also require gaining some
practical experience by working as a trainee in an architectural firm. This practicum
period helps students to understand the professional life of an architect. Practical
knowledge is as important as theoretical knowledge. The theoretical knowledge helps in
the development of the basic knowledge whereas practical helps to implement that
theoretical knowledge into practical life for the race of the real world. Architecture
students can pursue a participatory learning experience in their field of study
by enrolling in Practicum. A practicum provides us with an opportunity to
explore aspects of professional practice within design firms or other entities
engaged in activities that shape the built environment. Practicum is an
educational program for students who have never worked in a professional
office and for students who want to broaden their knowledge of professional
practice or conduct in-depth study in the context of a professional setting.

This practicum course in B.Arch. IV/I curriculum is intended to endow the

students of architecture with a base for using their theoretical knowledge
they have gained during class hours which helps them to work more
efficiently with self confidence in future, with their own ability when they put
their step in the actual professional architectural world. During design
projects in class, we just put our imaginative ideas into the design
consideration regardless of any constructional restrains, economic
consideration and many other things. But in practical, they might be
infeasible. In class projects, we ourselves being virtual clients, we design
accordingly as our wish. But, when we design for a real project, as the design
is for the client, his decision proves to be the most, which we have to trail up.
So, sometimes we have to compromise on our ideas. This practicum teaches
us how to interact with the client and how to convince him if his stipulation is
feasible and appropriate. Designing just in a paper is easy, but during the
process of concretizing it, many problems might be raised which we aren’t
conscious of until it is confronted in the real practice. Hence, practicum
proves to be beneficial in the exposure of those factual problems and helps
us to experience the design by ourselves.

The main objectives of practicum are:

 To get general idea about the official and financial management
 To gain professional experiences
 To get enrolled in official procedures in different kind of situations
while handling the projects
 To build up self confidence to stand through the architectural
profession
 To make the theoretical base stronger by implementing them in
practical
 To learn problems in architecture and construction
Dharmisara Subedi (071-B.arch-509)
Shah Consult International. Page 4
Practicum 2074

Hence, we can conclude, practicum to be a medium to reinforce us with the

practical knowledge of the architectural field, which helps us to prepare
ourselves both morally and spiritually to handle any challenges, likely to
encounter during our professional career.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this report are the following:
 To serve for the fulfillment of the 4th year 1st part practicum.
 To verify as the record of works done during the practicum period.
 To serve as a means of assessing the work done by the
Department of Architecture, Thapathali Campus.

METHODOLOGY
The methodologies exercised in the preparation of this report are as follows:
 Compilation of works done during the practicum tenure
 Arrangement into presentable format
 Description of each project and literary adaption of
form of involvement, output and obstacles

ORTHOPEADIC CLINIC

DESCRIPTION

It is the first project in which I involved during the practicum in SCI. It is the hospital com
residential building. It is the project which is in the construction phase.

CLIENT: RC Pandey

LOCATION: Bhairahawa, Nepal

MY INVOLVEMENT
 3D of second floor of residence part
 Revised plan edit
 Door window schedule revised

Practicum 2074

INVOLVEMENT OVERVIEW

In this project I was asked to draw 3D of its second floor and try to do interior of its
residential part. It was my first sketch up project from which I am able to learn basic
command of sketch up like how to move, copy, rotate, and scale. In this project I tried to do
interior of it. Since the time period is short (2days) due to next project I am unable to
finishing its all interior. First it is difficult to draw in sketch up because I am not that perfect
at sketch up but with the help of Ar. Anju Shrestha I am able to draw wall, door window.

OUTPUT

 The first thing I learned from this project is how to use sketch up
 Learned basic command of sketch up
 Learned how to make group, component and about push pull.
 Learned to use material bucket.
 Knew about the 3dwarehouse site.

CONCLUSION

The use of sketch up is very much important in architect’s life from which we can visualize
our project in 3D which we draw in CAD and it makes easy to deal with client so this project
helps me to gain knowledge about how to make 3d in sketch up though I didn’t learn properly
(finely) due to short period of time and due to this is my first sketch up project. But it helps
me a lot in using sketch up in first phase like how to change styles , how to change model
entity, about import and export, how to create scene. So this helps me in my further works of
practicum.

RESIDENCE FOR DR. BHUPENDRA PRASAD

DESCRIPTION:
This was the first municipal drawing project I was involved during my practicum at SCI.

CLIENT: Dr. Bhupendra Prasad

ADRESS: Shambhunath Ward no.5 (Mohanpur), Saptari, Nepal
SITE AREA: 330.6Sq.m
PLINTH AREA: 47.25Sq.m

CLIENT’S NEED
 Two storey building
 Ground floor: Kitchen, living room, bedroom combine layout, office room
Toilet, staircase.
 First floor: Two Bedrooms, Toilet accessible from two bedrooms, Verandah.
 Pillars on the front view of the ground floor.

 Staircase location: Outside part of building.

MY INVOLVEMENT
 Municipal drawings
 Architectural: Location map, Site plan, Ground floor plan, First floor plan,
Roof plan, 4 no of Elevations, Section, Door window schedule.
 3D View

BUILT ENVIRONMENT:
 Terai area of Nepal
 Hot Climate

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS:
 Load bearing structure
 Steel staircase
 Sill and lintel bands
 Cross ventilation

DESIGN CONSTRAINS:
 Due to small plinth area and various requirements of client there arises the
difficulty on managing space.
 Minimum plinth area (17’x18’) and clients requirement is main design constrains.

After the many more attempt to fulfill the client’s design requirement I am unable to manage
space so at last client modified the plinth area and I put staircase and toilet block at outer part
of the building.

SITE AREA: 330.6Sq.m

PLINTH AREA: 47.25Sq.m
GCR: 14.29%
TOTAL BUILT UP AREA: 94.5Sq.m
SETBACK: 1500mm

PROPOSED DESIGN DESCRIPTION:

It is the proposed design which is located in saptari, Nepal. Due to the size of brick
in terai area I have to put the thickness of wall 10”. There is 1500mm wide passage in
front of main entrance of building. As per the client requirement there are four no of
columns of size 300mmX300mm which helps to support the load of upper part of the
building. These columns are made up off brick. This is the load bearing structure so
we are not allowed to put openings anywhere. So I put openings at least 600mm
away from the ends of wall. The plinth height of the building is 450mm and floor
height of building is 2750mm.

Staircase is located at the outer part of the building. The material used to construct
staircase is steel. This is the open well staircase. The tread width of staircase is
900mm and riser height is 150mm.

There is the provision of opening as per the concept of cross ventilation because the
site is located in the terai area of Nepal and we know terai’s climate is hot climate.

SCI’S RECEIPTION FLOORING

This project is SCI’s own project. I am asked to draw flooring pattern of our office
reception by using homogeneous vinyl sheet by composing 3 different color patterns. During
this project I learned many more things from mam like how to develop design concept, we
have to develop design according to the people for whom we are designing, what they think
or see when they live at that space, for which element we are focusing our design.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS:

 Use of these 3 color vinyl sheet.

 Size of vinyl sheet : 2’x2’

MY INVOLVEMENT
 Draw flooring pattern in CAD by composing three required color.
 Tried to draw in 3D to visualize office space.

From this project I learned about detailed door window drawing as well as municipal
format drawing (architectural and structural also). New thing that I learn from this project is
about structural glazing and how to develop façade of building. In structural glazing openable
glass should be kept in between sill level and lintel lvl.

CONCLUSION:
This is one of the project from which I learned many more things about building drawings in
my practicum period. In this project I see many more design constrains and difficult
requirement of client so we have to revised this design at least 4 times. Obviously this project
will helps me to deal with many other projects on future.

TOILET INTERIOR
DESCRIPTION:
This is the interior layout project of toilet on which plan is given to me and I have to
draw interior layout. This helps to enhance my knowledge about interior of toilet and kinds of
fixtures and materials used in toilet. The size of toilet is 2035mm X2370mm excluding wall.
There is only one plain wall. It contains one window of length 950mm, fixed door of length
900mm and door of size 775mmX2100mm. This interior is done in the concept of dry area
and wet area. Basin and commode area is considered as dry area and bath area is considered
as wet area. I have drawn interior layout of it by referring time saver standards. 25 mm thick
marble is used as wall finishing material. Projecting tile is also used in the back side of the
commode to transfer the pipe line from there. 25 mm thick marble flooring is used. Bath tub
is placed on the wall on which there is fixed door. Bath cube and basin counter lies on the
plane wall. Bath tub is in oval shape. In bath cube folding glass door is provided.

CLIENT’S NEED
 Water closet
 Basin
 Bath tub
 Bath cube
 Bathroom rack

MY INVOLVEMENT
 CAD drawing
 Interior layout of toilet
 Pdf and images
 3D
 Sketch up
 Image render

DESIGN REQUIREMENT:
 25mm thick marble wall finishing
 No need of tap in bath tub
 Commode and basin should be located in 450mm c/c from wall.

DESIGN CONSTRAINS:
 Two no. of doors and one window, due to these doors there is difficulty in do interior
layout.
 Due to minimum space difficulty arises on design of basin and basin counter.

This design constrain is resolved by placing triangular basin counter in spite of rectangular
basin counter.

OUTPUT
From this project I learned to render image from sketch up by using v-ray plug-in. It helps me
to elaborate by knowledge about interior of toilet. The main thing I learn from this drawing is
about the wet space and dry space coordination in designing of toilet.

CONCLUSION:
Thus, this project brought me back to the basics, understanding of detailed interior drawing
of toilet and also gave confident to render image in sketch up .Interesting part in this design is
a triangular basin counter which is made due to lack of space.

CONCLUSIONS:
Only theoretical knowledge is not enough for an architecture student. Not only drafting and
designing; what we did in past three years; but also facing and observing site surroundings
and problems encountered during construction. Thus, practicum has given us that chance, to
learn what we don’t get to learn at architecture school. We get to be a part of professional
organizations, work as professionals. It is, thus, a big step towards our professional careers as
architects.

During our design projects in class, our main intention becomes how to
provide maximum space for the convenience of its users and we are not
concerned about the cost that will be consequently raised due to increase
in floor area. But in practice, it’s not economical as every inch counts and
we are supposed to design within the cost limitations. So, we should try
our best to provide the space just enough to serve the function for what it
is intended for.

From site visit, I came to know much more about the real construction works
held in site, how workers are involved and how the design we prepare in
paper comes to be realized in ground of reality. In class designs we are
not concerned about the structural parts of the building; we just try to
create an appealing and aesthetical building, no matter it is really possible
to concretize or not. Our prime considerations become the architectural
expression. From practicum, I came to perceive that along with the
Architectural aesthetic, structural consideration is equally important
otherwise, the design will be confined to the paper only, not in real practice.

This practicum has helped me in realizing the professional architectural

ground and exploring myself, like, how much I can utilize my knowledge
that I gained during the class hours in real when I am assigned to any
task. It has amplified my confidence, which will be really helpful in my
future professional career.

Hence, it could be concluded that his semester is an important part of our

study and knowledge gain during this period will act as a base to our career
in coming future.
