Series capacitors for Mali-Senegal

225 kV power interconnector

A total of five series capacitors, supplied

and installed by ABB, are in operation in
a 225 kV power transmission corridor
stretching more than 800 km from the
225 MW Manantali hydroelectric dam and Dagana s/s
power station in Mali to the load centers 2 x 22.5 Mvar SC

in the western parts of Senegal and the SENEGAL
west coast of Africa. The owner and Kayes s/s
22.5 Mvar SC
operator of the series capacitors is SOGEM,
Société de Gestion de l´Energie de Manan-
tali, responsible for generation and trans
mission of Mali, Senegal and Mauretania.

High voltage equipment for five substations, power transform-

ers as well as shunt reactors are also part of the ABB under-
taking.

By means of the corridor, the rich hydropower resources of

the Manantali dam and power station are coming to the bene
fit and aiding the economical growth of three countries: Mali,
Senegal and Mauretania. The purpose of the series capaci-
tors is to safeguard stable power transmission over the vast
distances in question.
One series capacitor is located at Kayes in Mali, two are lo- Layout, One series capacitor
cated at Matam in Senegal and two are located at Dagana in
Senegal. The five series capacitors are all identical in design
and each is rated at 22,5 Mvar at 225 kV.

The main design of the series capacitors is gapless and based

on overvoltage protection by means of ZnO varistors. Each
phase of the series capacitors is equipped with a ZnO protec-
tive scheme, a bypass switch and a current limiting damping
reactor. The varistors are located on top of the capacitor units
in each phase, allowing a platform-free and very compact

physical design.

The series capacitors act to reduce the transfer reactance of

the very long power transmission corridor. This is beneficial
for power transmission, as it improves voltage control as well
as increases the dynamic stability of the link. This comes
out as improved power transmission capability under varying
operating conditions. Power transmission losses are reduced
as well.
