Development and design of High speed Passenger Carrying Vehicles for Indian Railways with better
ride index by studying vehicle dynamics and vibration analysis.

ABSTRACT

Indian railways, since its inception in 1853 British colonial era, have been catering to transportation needs of
millions of commuters across the country. The passenger services of Indian railways cater to the need of over
million passengers per day. The numbers are exponentially increasing every year and so are expectation of
the passengers for safe and comfortable journey. Across the globe various countries have successfully
achieved speeds in excess of 200 km/hr,along with great ride comfort. Considering the above,It is all the
more essential to develop and design coaching stocks capable of clocking speeds higher than 200 km/hr with
ride index better than the existing stock.
3 Study program in Japan:(Describe in detail and with specifics —particularly concerning the ultimate goal(s) of your research in Japan)
(研究計画:詳細かつ具体に記入し、特に研究の最終目標について具体的に記入すること。)
Current problems
Non streamlined design - The present coaching stock of Indian railways include coaches of ICF , BEML and
LHB design. All the designs seem to lack the feature of aerodynamic streamlining which is the prime constraint
in attaining higher speeds.
Vortex creation - vortex creation in the vestibuled area between two coaches is another factor that impedes
the motion of rolling stock.
Hunting Oscillations - The present rolling stock of IR is equipped with wheels of worn wheel profile having
tapered wheel tread portion. The tapering of wheel imparts a motion of hunting oscillation to the stock by
virtue of which the wheel sets constantly move laterally over the rails. This means that a substantial amount of
kinetic energy generated by the stock is wasted in the lateral oscillations in direction perpendicular to the
direction of motion. At high speeds these oscillations can seriously affect the track alignment as well as act as
a derailing force for the stock.
Draft gears and couplers - The draft gears are supposed to dampen as well as transmit the draft and buffing
forces received from the coupler. The draft gears need to be double acting and sensitive to higher acceleration
and decelerations. The coupler designs should be fail proof to avoid train parting at high speeds.
Failure prone design of secondary suspension Flexi Coil springs- over the past few months there have been
numerous cases of breakage/fracture of flexi coil secondary suspension spring in LHB coaches. Such failures
restrict the higher speeds potential of the rolling stocks
Speed restrictions at curves, points and crossings - The average speed of coaching train is often marred by
the presence of numerous curves , points and crossings en route. Bogie designs of coaches need subtle
modifications so as to negotiate such points at higher speeds.
Ride index - Riding Comfort and ride quality is the biggest criterion in deciding the success of High Speed
Rail. The design of bogie unit should have optimum numbers of vertical , lateral and yaw dampers.

Proposed solutions
• Design of shell of coaches should be streamlined after due analysis of air resistance at high speeds.

• Vortex creation in vestibule portion has to be eliminated by redesigning outer portion of vestibule
area.
• Hunting oscillation of wheel on rails may be substantially minimized by decreasing the angle of
taper of the wheel tread portion attaining a flatter wheel profile which will automatically reduce
lateral movements at high speed.
• Design of Flexi coil springs less prone to fatigue failure by studying its behavior in a fatigue testing
system and by augmenting its fracture toughness. Flexi coil springs must be replaced by computer
controlled air spring suspensions with a duplex check valve and leveling valves , capable of
withstanding Super Dense Crush Loads. The air springs would go a long way in negotiating curves
at higher speeds by promptly creating a pressure differential between air springs on the same bogie.
• Dynamics and vibration analysis of a railway vehicle may be studied and simulated to come up with
sturdy bogie designs imparting higher dampness coefficient at primary and secondary stage.

The ultimate goal of my research will be –

• To study dynamics and vibration analysis of a rail vehicle and suitably design bogies/trolleys which
would provide better ride comfort and would be capable of attaining higher speeds in the range of
200-250 km/hr.
• To simulate vibrations in a vehicle model and on basis of results to design sturdy and low
maintenance suspension springs ,coupler and draft gear designs.
• To research upon use of alternate material for coaching shell construction, modified design of shells
to give it a streamlined finish.

Methodology Of Research
• To analyse and infer all factors affecting Ride Index of a railway coach by studying Train Track
Dynamics especially vertical/lateral stability and dynamic models.
• To calculate Sperling ride index for a railway vehicle using the empirical formula
Wz = 0.896(a3/f) 1 / 1 0 (ride quality),
Wz = 0.896[(a 3/f)F(f)] 1 / 1 0 (comfort),

where a is the peak acceleration (centimeters per second squared), / the oscillation frequency (hertz), and F(f)
a frequency-dependent factor that expresses human vibration sensitivity.
• To simulate running condition within a railway coach and conduct vibration analysis

• On the basis of results obtained from ride index calculations and vibration analysis
simulations, experimental design of hydraulic/pneumatics actuators for Bogies and Car
body to improve ride index and better vibration damping.
