Introduction
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health provides a
sound introduction to the basics of occupational health and safety. The NEBOSH IGC covers
the main legal requirements for health and safety in the World, identification and control of
workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. It is designed for managers,
supervisors, and employee representatives and is ideal for anyone who wants to establish a career
in health and safety. More than 100,000 persons currently hold this Certificate and either
practice as Health & Safety Advisors within their companies in the World or use this Certificate
to gain entry to the Diploma course.

Eligibility
There is no strict requirement for enrolment to this course although it is advisable that candidates
should have a reasonable command of English and some exposure to the world of work
and above all a genuine interest in the field of health and safety

Professional Body Memberships

Successful completion of the NEBOSH Certificate satisfies the academic requirements for
admission to the grade of Technician Membership of IOSH or Associate Membership at IIRSM.

Progression
The NEBOSH Certificate entitles you to exemptions from the IGC1 units of the NEBOSH
Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management and the NEBOSH Certificate in Construction Safety
and Health as well as providing the perfect basis for you to progress onto the NEBOSH
International Diploma or NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management.

Brief Course Outline

This course comprises 3 modules, namely Units IGC1, GC2 and GC3.

Units IGC1 and GC2 are taught units each assessed by a two-hour written examination.

Unit GC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate’s
own workplace. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

To achieve the NEBOSH International General Certificate, you will need to successfully
complete the three compulsory units:

 
 Unit IGC1: ‘The Management of Health and Safety’,
 
 Unit GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards and Risk Control

 
Unit GC3 (the workplace Practical Assessment).
IGC1 consists of the following elements:
Element 1: Foundations in Health and Safety
Element 2: Health and Safety Policy
Element 3: Organising Health and Safety
Element 4: Planning Health and Safety
Element 5: Measuring, Audit and Review
Duration: 36 Tuition hours – 22 Private study hours
Full time: 5 days – Part Time: 3 months

GC2 consists of the following 8 elements: Element 1:

Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control Element 4:
Work Equipment Hazards and Risk Control Element
5: Electricity Hazards and Risk Control Element 6: Fire

Duration: 42 Tuition hours – 26 Private Study hours
Full time: 5 days – Part time: 3 months
